Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture is known to be one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries in active individuals especially athletes. Approximately 200.000 ACL injuries occur every year of which 100,000 require surgery. Once ruptured, it becomes very difficult to regain its previous function and it does not have the capacity to heal on its own. It is thus very important to diagnose an ACL rupture as early as possible. Clinicians thus need to perform a test which has a high sensitivity to rule out a negative test and specificity in order to rule in a positive test in the diagnosis.

PURPOSE: This study aim was to detect the impact of lateral ankle ligaments injury on syndesmotic laxity when evaluated arthroscopically in a cadaveric model. The null hypothesis was that lateral ankle ligament injury does not affect the stability of syndesmosis.
METHODS: Sixteen fresh-frozen above-knee amputated cadaveric specimens were divided into two groups of eight specimens that underwent arthroscopic evaluation of the distal tibiofibular joint. In both the groups, the assessment was first done with all syndesmotic and ankle ligaments intact. Thereafter, Group 1 underwent sequential tra…

Cruciate ligaments (CL) of the knee joint are injured following trauma or aging. MicroRNAs (miRs) are potential therapeutic targets in musculoskeletal disorders, but there is little known about the role of miRs and their expression ligaments during aging. This study aimed to (1) identify if mice with normal physical activity, wild-stock house mice are an appropriate model to study age-related changes in the knee joint and (2) investigate the expression of miRs in aging murine cruciate ligaments. Knee joints were collected from 6 and 24 months old C57BL/6 and wild-stock house mice (Mus musculus…

Different surgical techniques have been proposed to reconstruct combined anterior cruciate (ACL) and lateral collateral ligaments (LCL). Although these surgical techniques are reliable and reproducible, the number of autologous grafts needed for the reconstruction could be a limiting factor, especially when patients present with multi-ligament knee injuries and the posterior cruciate ligament is also torn. In addition, some of these techniques are not easy to master and have a steep learning curve. We present a surgical procedure that has been used over the last 18 years to reconstruct combine…

The contribution of each of the ligaments in preventing the arch loss, hindfoot valgus, and forefoot abduction seen in progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD) has not been well characterized. An improved understanding of the individual ligament contributions to the deformity would aid in selecting among available treatments, optimizing current surgical techniques, and developing new ones. In this study, we evaluated the contribution of each ligament to the maintenance of foot alignment using a finite element model of the foot reconstructed from computed tomography scan images. The collaps…

AIM OF STUDY: Most sprained lateral ankle ligaments heal uneventfully, but in some cases the ligament's elastic function is not restored, leading to chronic ankle instability. Ultrasound shear wave elastography can be used to quantify the elasticity of musculoskeletal soft tissues; it may serve as a test of ankle ligament function during healing to potentially help differentiate normal from ineffective healing. The purpose of this study was to determine baseline shear wave velocity values for the lateral ankle ligaments in healthy male subjects, and to assess inter-observer reliability.

PURPOSE: Provoked vulvodynia (PV) is the most common cause of vulvar pain and dyspareunia. Although its etiology is unknown, it has been associated with musculoskeletal dysfunction. The inability of the lax uterosacral ligaments (USLs) to support the adjoining T11/L2 and S2-4 nerve plexuses is considered to cause PV. This study aimed to determine whether providing mechanical support to the USLs would improve PV.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: PV patients were randomly divided into two groups. The participants in each group underwent sham manipulation (inserting a wide swab in the vagina without applyi…

AIMS: In the native hip, the hip capsular ligaments tighten at the limits of range of hip motion and may provide a passive stabilizing force to protect the hip against edge loading. In this study we quantified the stabilizing force vectors generated by capsular ligaments at extreme range of motion (ROM), and examined their ability to prevent edge loading.
METHODS: Torque-rotation curves were obtained from nine cadaveric hips to define the rotational restraint contributions of the capsular ligaments in 36 positions. A ligament model was developed to determine the line-of-action and effective m…

European spine journal : official publication of the European Spine Society, the European Spinal Deformity Society, and the European Section of the Cervical Spine Research Society2020eng
PURPOSE: The craniocervical junction (CCJ) is a complex of bony and ligamentous structure stabilizing CCJ. Nearly one-third of all traumatic injuries to the cervical spine involve the CCJ. Only little literature is available on this topic, and most of the studies are focused on anatomy, biomechanics or ligamentous injury in whiplash-associated disorders. We conducted a prospective study to investigate age-related changes in the craniocervical ligaments.
METHODS: We included asymptomatic volunteers between 16 and 99 years old who had no history of whiplash or other cervical trauma. Volunteers …

Injuries of the ligaments and tendons of the ankle and foot are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries. A correct and precise description of the pathology and possible accompanying injuries is essential for treatment planning by trauma and orthopedic surgeons. While X‑ray is used to exclude fractures, ultrasound is a very useful tool to assess the ligaments and tendons. For the radiologist, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is invaluable regarding the correct assessment of (partial) ruptures, as well as for evaluating accompanying injuries. The aim of the present overview is to provide …

Since the time of its inception within facial anatomy, wide variability in the terminology as well as the location and extent of retaining ligaments has resulted in confusion over nomenclature. Confusion over nomenclature also arises with regard to the subcutaneous ligamentous attachments, and in the anatomic location and extent described, particularly for zygomatic and masseteric ligaments. Certain historical terms-McGregor's patch, the platysma auricular ligament, parotid cutaneous ligament, platysma auricular fascia, temporoparotid fasica (Lore's fascia), anterior platysma-cutaneous ligamen…

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is a common disease that accounts for 250,000 cases/year in the United States. The anterolateral ligament (ALL) has been suggested to be an important restraint for rotational instability, and its reconstruction provides a reinforcement to the ACL reconstruction in this aspect, especially in high-demand athletes and in knees with high-grade pivot shift. Different techniques for associated ACL and ALL reconstruction have been described, but the ideal technique remains unclear. Several facts of these techniques may entail a concern to the surgeon, such

OBJECTIVE: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common disorder that negatively impacts the quality of life in many women. Uterosacral ligaments (USLs) are supportive structures of the pelvic organs that are often attenuated in women with POP. The HOXA genes regulate the development of the uterosacral ligaments. We compared expression of HOXA11 and MMP2 in USLs of women with and without POP.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective sequential cross sectional study was conducted in ZTB Women's Health Research and Education Hospital. We compared expression of HOXA11 and MMP2 in USLs of women with (n:18)…

The isolated bilateral agenesis of both cruciate ligaments is a rare congenital disorder. A 17-year-old male came to our attention due to an alteration in gait pattern, pain, and tendency to walk on the forefoot with his knee flexed. The patient did not recall previous injuries. Upon physical examination anterior and posterior chronic instability were observed. Radiographic examination of both knees showed hypoplasia of the tibial eminence, a hypoplastic lateral femoral condyle, and a narrow intercondylar notch. MRI brought to light a bilateral agenesis of both posterior cruciate ligaments. Ar…

Osteochondritis dissecans is a rare cause of painful knees in children. Only 10 cases of lateral tibial condyle involvement have been reported in the literature. Congenital agenesis of both cruciate ligaments has been described even less, and its prevalence is unknown. The authors report an atypical association of osteochondritis dissecans of the tibia with congenital absence of both cruciate ligaments. A 12-year-old male soccer player presented with a painful right knee. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed the diagnosis. The child was treated conservatively. At 18-month follow-up, radiographs…
