Effect of the removal of lipids on specific precipitation.

Horse antisera to rabbit albumin and globulins and to Type III pneumococci were extracted at low temperatures with alcohol-ether. The precipitin reactions given by these sera deprived of lipids were studied by quantitative analytical methods. With longer periods of standing and slightly higher speeds of centrifugation than those usually required for lipid-containing sera, precipitation may be made complete in immune sera from which the lipids have been removed. The function of lipids in immune reactions is discussed, as well as the effects on antibody globulin of the procedures used in their r…

Ketogenic diet mediates intestinal tumorigenesis through lipids not ketones.

Diet composition shapes tissue function and disease risk by modulating nutrient availability, metabolic state and cellular dynamics1. In the … enoma formation specifically under KD, linking tumour initiation to fatty acid oxidation of dietary lipids rather than lipid accumulation. These findings reveal that dietary lipid content, through fatty acid oxidation rather than ketone metabolism, influences intestinal tumorigenesis and highlight the need for nuanced consideration of dietary strategies …

Structural evolution of ionizable lipids for nucleic acid delivery.

Ionizable lipid nanoparticles have emerged as a potent non-viral delivery platform for nucleic acid therapeutics, achieving clinical breakthroughs ranging from the FDA-approved small interfering RNA therapeutic to mRNA vaccines against coronavirus disease 2019 and respiratory syncytial virus. Their success stems from the ability of ionizable lipids to remain neutral in physiological environments, yet protonate in acidic endosomes, enabling the efficient release of genetic cargo. Over the last several decades, their structures have evolved extensively through the application of combinatorial ch…

Malignant mesothelioma cells with characteristic intracytoplasmic vacuolization and lipids.

In this brief report, we described some uncommon cytomorphological features of malignant mesothelioma (MM) cells in pleural effusions. The tumor cells exhibited abundant cytoplasmic vacuolization, with presence of single or multiple eccentric nuclei in several cells. In the Giemsa-stained smear, we observed a glossy spherical material in some cells, which tested positive in Sudan III stain. In immunocytochemical analysis, tumor cells were positive for calretinin, podoplanin, epithelial membrane antigen, and methylthioadenosine phosphorylase; tumor cells were negative for BRCA1-associated prote

The role of lipids in cancer progression and metastasis.

Lipids have essential biological functions in the body (e.g., providing energy storage, acting as a signaling molecule, and being a structural component of membranes); however, an excess of lipids can promote tumorigenesis, colonization, and metastatic capacity of tumor cells. To metastasize, a tumor cell goes through different stages that require lipid-related metabolic and structural adaptations. These adaptations include altering the lipid membrane composition for invading other niches and overcoming cell death mechanisms and promoting lipid catabolism and anabolism for energy and oxidative…

Lipids, Lipid-Lowering Therapy, and Neuropathy: A Narrative Review.

Statins, or 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors, are the mainstay of treatment for hypercholesterolemia as they effectively reduce LDL-C levels and risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Apart from hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia and HDL dysfunction are known risk factors for neuropathy in people with obesity and diabetes. Although there are case reports of statin-induced neuropathy, ad hoc analyses of clinical trials and observational studies have shown that statins may improve peripheral neuropathy. However, large randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses of

LDL receptor and pathogen processes: Functions beyond normal lipids.

Although the role of the LDL receptor concerning lipids is well known, its role in various viral and parasitic infections, and in regulating the inflammatory response is poorly understood. Several infectious agents use the LDL receptor as a port of entry, and others depend on it for their cycle of infection. In this review, we focus on the discovery, structure, and normal function of the LDL receptor, as well as its role in a selection of infections. The LDL receptor plays an important role in certain infections and is a potential target for treatment deserving further research.

Immunogenetics of Atherosclerosis-Link between Lipids, Immunity, and Genes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Atherosclerosis is a complex disease process with lipid as a traditional modifiable risk factor and therapeutic target in … will have downstream impact on atherosclerosis. This brief review summarizes the relationship among lipids, genes, and immunity in atherogenesis and presents evidence to show how these elements affect each other. Modulation of immune response, though in its infancy, has a potential to emerge as a novel clinical strategy in treating ACVD.

The Atherogenic Role of Circulating Modified Lipids in Atherosclerosis.

Lipid accumulation in the arterial wall is a crucial event in the development of atherosclerotic lesions. Circulating low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is the major source of lipids that accumulate in the atherosclerotic plaques. It was discovered that not all LDL is atherogenic. In the blood plasma of atherosclerotic patients, LDL particles are the subject of multiple enzymatic and non-enzymatic modifications that determine their atherogenicity. Desialylation is the primary and the most important atherogenic LDL modification followed by a cascade of other modifications that also increase blood at…
