Retroperitoneal liposarcomas: the experience of a tertiary Asian center.

BACKGROUND: Liposarcoma is the single most common soft tissue sarcoma in the retroperitoneum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with primary retroperitoneal liposarcoma treated between June 1990 and June 2005 were conducted to evaluate the clinical results of resection for retroperitoneal liposarcomas (RPLS) and the prognostic factors for disease recurrence and patient survival in an Asian population. RESULTS: Twenty-one patients operated on for curative intent (12 Males, 9 Females; mean age: 52.4 years) were evaluated. Of these, 13 presented with tumors that were wel

[Synchronous triple primary malignant neoplasms in a 42-year-old female].

Synchronous triple primary malignant neoplasms, namely, retroperitoneal myxoid liposarcoma, sigmoid colon carcinoma and uterocervical carcinoma in situ in a 42-year-old female is reported. The retroperitoneal sarcoma and colonic carcinoma were resected simultaneously, while a hysterectomy was performed five months later. No genetic influence could be elicited in the present case. The synchronous triple primary, malignant neoplasms in this case should be considered as having arisen by mere chance. Other cases in which triple or more primary malignancies were resected are briefly reviewed. In ad

Fat-containing lesions of the retroperitoneum: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Retroperitoneal lesions represent a broad, diverse collection of entities; when they contain fat, the differential diagnosis, which ranges from benign to fully malignant lesions, substantially narrows. Lipomas rarely occur in the retroperitoneum; thus, fat-containing lesions in this location should never be dismissed as lipoma. Pelvic lipomatosis is the overgrowth of histologically normal fat in the extraabdominal compartments of the pelvis along the perirectal and perivesicular spaces. Infants and young children develop lipoblastomas rather than liposarcomas, which occur in older patients. Li

[Liposarcoma in childhood. Report of an exceptional case. Review of the literature].

This paper describes a case of liposarcoma of exceptional paratesticular location (first in the literature described in infancy). The case corresponds to a 5-year-old boy. The influence of the histology, location of the tumour and possibility of complete surgical exeresis is fundamental with regard to prognosis and evolution. Pediatric experience is extremely limited and we may superimpose the treatment in children of that carried out in adults (more case histories), in whom multimodal therapy (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy) concludes with encouraging results. The updating of previously

Overview of systemic therapy options in liposarcoma, with a focus on the activity of selinexor, a selective inhibitor of nuclear export in dedifferentiated liposarcoma.

Liposarcoma (LPS) is a common soft tissue sarcoma that encompasses diverse subtypes of well-differentiated/dedifferentiated, myxoid/round cell, and pleomorphic LPS. There is heterogeneity among the various LPS types with regard to prognosis, molecular pathogenesis, and response to treatment. Well-differentiated (WDLPS) and dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLPS) are most common types, which share common genetic alteration of chromosome 12q13-15 amplification resulting in amplification of oncogenes, including MDM2 (Mouse double minute 2), CDK4 (cyclin-dependent kinase 4), and HMGA2 (High mobility

[Retro-peritoneal liposarcoma. About 5 cases and revue of literature].

Liposarcomas are malignant mesenchymatous tumors developed from elements constituting the greasy tissue in various stages of differentiation. It is one of the most frequent mesenchymatous sarcomas. Retro-peritoneum is a privileged site of development in 12 to 15% of cases. During 9 years, from 1994 till 2002, we have colligated and operated 5 cases of retro-peritoneal liposarcomas. Average age was 50 years (extremes 34 to 79 years) with a sex-ratio of 1.5. Diagnosis was late beyond 6 months. Abdominal pain and the appearance of an enormous mass (20 cm) were the revealing signs. No imagery meth

Correlation of histological grade of dedifferentiation with clinical outcome in 55 patients with dedifferentiated liposarcomas.

In this study the histologic grade of dedifferentiated liposarcomas was correlated with outcome in surgically resected specimens in 55 patients over a 19-year period at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The tumors were located in the retroperitoneum (N=35); the extremities and thigh (N=16), and the remainder involved the spermatic cord and head and neck. Most tumors were large (mean=21 cm.) Follow-up was available in all 55 patients (median=36 months). Forty-one tumors classified as high-grade dedifferentiated liposarcoma (HG-DDLPS) had mitotically active pleomorphic and spindle cel

Spectrum of Fat-containing Soft-Tissue Masses at MR Imaging: The Common, the Uncommon, the Characteristic, and the Sometimes Confusing.

Fat-containing tumors are the most common soft-tissue tumors encountered clinically. The vast majority of fat-containing soft-tissue masses are benign. Lipomas are the most common benign fat-containing masses and demonstrate a characteristic appearance at magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Less common benign soft-tissue masses include lipoblastoma, angiolipoma, spindle cell lipoma/pleomorphic lipoma, myolipoma, chondroid lipoma, lipomatosis of nerve, lipomatosis, hibernoma, and fat necrosis. Well-differentiated liposarcomas (WDLPSs)/atypical lipomatous tumors (ALTs) are locally aggressive soft-t

Update on Dosing and Fractionation for Neoadjuvant Radiotherapy for Localized Soft Tissue Sarcoma.

Neoadjuvant radiotherapy (RT) over 5-6 weeks with daily doses of 1.8-2.0 Gy to a total dose of 50-50.4 Gy is standard of care for localized high-grade soft tissue sarcomas (STS) of the extremities and trunk wall. One exception is myxoid liposarcomas where the phase II DOREMY trial applying a preoperative dose of 36 Gy in 2 Gy fractions (3-4 weeks treatment) has achieved excellent local control rates of 100% after a median follow-up of 25 months.Hypofractionated preoperative RT has been investigated in a number of phase II single-arm studies suggesting that daily doses of 2.75-8 Gy over 1-3 wee

A rare chimeric TLS/FUS-CHOP transcript in a patient with multiple liposarcomas: a case report.

Myxoid liposarcomas harbor a unique and specific t(12;16)(q13,p11) chromosomal translocation. The breakpoint has recently been identified, and involvement of the TLS/FUS gene on chromosome 16 and the CHOP gene on chromosome 12 was demonstrated. We report a case of a 45-year-old woman who developed multiple malignant lipomatous tumors of unknown origin and myxoid/round cell histology at different locations. To examine the diagnostic potential of this translocation and to develop a hypothesis on the origin of the tumors, we used cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic methods (reverse transcriptio

Liposarcoma of the anterior mediastinum and thymus. A clinicopathologic study of 28 cases.

We studied 28 cases of anterior mediastinal liposarcoma occurring in 16 males and 12 females with a mean age of 43 years (range, 14-72). Presenting symptoms included dyspnea (four cases) and chest pain (four cases), although 11 tumors were detected incidentally by routine chest radiography. Seven cases were believed to be located within the thymus. Most (i.e., 25) of the cases were of low grade, with the well-differentiated lipoma-like or sclerosing subtypes constituting 60% and the myxoid subtype constituting 28%; the remaining 12% exhibited mixed features. Three cases were pleomorphic type.

[Neoplastic lumbosacral plexopathy and "hot foot"].

Neoplastic lumbosacral plexopathy is a frequent and disabling complication in subjects with cancer. Its clinical presentation is characterized by pain, muscle weakness, sensory complaints in one or occasionally both limbs associated with the tumoral symptoms. The presence of autonomic symptoms is less frequent; one of these is the "hot and dry foot". We present two patients, one with prostatic cancer and the other with myxoid liposarcoma, who developed a lumbosacral plexopathy as a manifestation of the extension of the neoplastic process; in both cases there was in addition a clear difference

Distinct cytologic features of spindle cell lipoma. A cytologic-histologic study with clinical, radiologic, electron microscopic, and cytogenetic correlations.

BACKGROUND: Spindle cell lipoma (SCL) is a relatively uncommon, benign tumor that usually presents in the subcutaneous fat of adult men. Although some studies have addressed the histologic findings of SCL, only a few descriptions of aspiration cytology findings have been published. The cytologic features are poorly defined, and aspirates from SCL may cause diagnostic problems, because SCL shares some features with other fatty/spindle cell or myxoid lesions, benign as well as malignant. METHODS: Twelve patients underwent fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology as the primary diagnostic modality

Primary liposarcoma of the orbit. Problems in the diagnosis and management of five cases.

The clinicopathologic features and the results of diagnostic studies were reviewed in five patients with primary orbital liposarcoma. The major clinical complaints were diplopia and proptosis; visual function was typically well maintained. In three cases, computed tomographic (CT) scans displayed lesions with a central fat density rimmed by a variably radiodense pseudocapsule, leading to the erroneous clinical impression that the lesions were cystic in character. Ultrasonography ruled out a truly cystic tumor by demonstrating internal acoustic interfaces. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in on

Dendritic fibromyxolipoma: clinicopathologic study of a distinctive benign soft tissue lesion that may be mistaken for a sarcoma.

Twelve cases are described of a distinctive benign soft tissue lesion that may be mistaken for a sarcoma. The tumors occurred in 11 men and a woman aged 33 to 81 years (mean, 64 years), and measured from 2 to 11 cm in greatest diameter (mean, 6 cm). They were grossly described as soft, well-circumscribed, yellow-gray, with a mucoid cut surface. All cases were superficially located in the subcutis or muscular fascia of the head and neck region or the chest and back. Histologically, the tumors were characterized by a proliferation of spindle or stellate fibroblastic cells variably admixed with m

A Case of Phyllodes Tumor of the Breast with Mixed Liposarcoma: Case Report and Literature Review.

Phyllodes tumors (PTs) account for less than 1% of breast tumors, and malignant PTs account for even less. Here, we described an unusual case of malignant PT with mixed liposarcoma (myxoid liposarcoma [MLP] and pleomorphic liposarcoma [PLP]). A 52-year-old woman discovered a small lump in her left breast. Twenty years later, the lump suddenly grew within 1 month. Mammography showed space-occupying lesions of the left breast. Histologically, the tumor was characterized by hypercellular stroma covering the epithelium and protrusion of the myoepithelium into the cyst to form a lobulated structure

Painful swollen leg--think beyond deep vein thrombosis or Baker's cyst.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis of leg is very common in clinical practice. Not infrequently a range of pathologies are diagnosed after excluding a thrombosis, often after a period of anticoagulation. CASE PRESENTATION: This is a report of three patients who presented with a painful swollen leg and were initially treated as a deep vein thrombosis or a baker's cyst, but later diagnosed as a pleomorphic sarcoma, a malignant giant cell tumor of the muscle and a myxoid liposarcoma. A brief review of such similar reports and the relevant literature is presented. CONCLUSION: A pa

Hibernoma: A case report of a rare soft lipoid tissue in the neck.

Hibernoma is rare and benign soft tissue tumor, arising from persistent fetal brown tissue. Although radiologic features are not specific, certain imaging characteristics, common locations and patient demographics may suggest hibernoma as a differential diagnosis of soft tissue tumors that have fatty components. Total resection is required due to the possibility of sampling errors in myxoid and well differentiated liposarcoma tissue components that resemble hibernoma. We report the case of a young adult with a right supra-clavicular swelling that had been present for 10 years, with no other as

Primary orbital liposarcoma in Li-Fraumeni cancer family syndrome: a case report.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to describe a case of primary orbital liposarcoma in Li-Fraumeni syndrome. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: In July 1998 a 20-year-old woman with a histological diagnosis of orbital myxoid liposarcoma underwent surgical treatment in our department. Since the patient's family pedigree met the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of LFS, molecular analysis was performed, which resulted in a molecular profile consistent with Li-Fraumeni syndrome. RESULTS: The patient underwent orbital exenteration extended to the upper eyelid; surgical reconstructive steps
