Intraventricular location of metastatic breast carcinoma: a case report.

Intraventricular neoplasms are uncommon central nervous system lesions that account for only 10% of all neoplasms and are unusual location of metastatic breast cancer. A 73-year-old woman with a medical history of breast carcinoma without any signs of metastatic lesions in the liver, lungs or bones and with an intraventricular tumorous lesion found on multislice computed tomography of the brain is presented. Surgery was indicated in order to confirm the diagnosis histologically and to gain local control of the metastasis. The patient was operated on using the neuronavigation guided transcortic

Pseudoneoplasms in ectothermic animals.

Gross and cytologic similarities between certain non-neoplastic conditions and neoplasms in lower animals including fish, amphibians, and reptiles have invited misinterpretations and contested interpretations. Major categories of pseudo-neoplasms, illustrated by specific examples from material accessioned into the Registry of Tumors in Lower Animals, include infections by foreign organisms which resemble host cells (algal protothecosis and amebic pseudotumors); unusual normal conditions [giant islets of endocrine pancreas (Brockmann bodies) in liver, atypical sites of hematopoietic tissue]; no

Inhalation toxicology and carcinogenesis studies of propylene glycol mono-t-butyl ether in rats and mice.

Propylene glycol mono-t-butyl ether (PGMBE) is used as a solvent in a variety of commercial applications. Male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F(1) mice were exposed to PGMBE by whole-body inhalation for 2 or 14 weeks (0, 75, 150, 300, 600, or 1200 ppm) or 2 years (0, 75, 300, or 1200 ppm); male NBR rats were exposed for 2 weeks. The kidney and the liver were targets of PGMBE toxicity in rats. Renal lesions suggestive of alpha(2u)-globulin nephropathy were observed in male F344/N, in the 2 and 14-week studies, no kidney lesions were seen in NBR rats. In the 2-year study, male rats displayed exp

Suppressive effect of irsogladine maleate on diethylnitrosamine-initiated and phenobarbital-promoted hepatocarcinogenesis in male F344 rats.

Modifying effects of irsogladine maleate (IRG) on diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis were examined in male F344 rats. Six-week-old rats were divided into 8 groups. Groups 1 through 4 were given a single i.p. injection of DEN (200 mg/kg body weight) at the start of the experiment, whereas groups 5 through 8 received a single i.p. injection of saline as the vehicle treatment. Groups 1 and 8 were kept on the basal diet and distilled water throughout the experiment (36 weeks). Groups 2 and 7 were exposed to 500 ppm phenobarbital (PB) in the drinking water, starting one week afte

Hepatic resection in 125 patients.

Hepatic resection was performed in 125 patients. Ninety-three of the 125 patients had malignant neoplasms; primary liver carcinoma in 61, metastatic liver carcinoma in 15, carcinoma of the bifurcation of the hepatic ducts in 16, and carcinoma of the gallbladder in one. Performance of hepatic resection was complicated by the presence of liver cirrhosis and jaundice in 42 and 19 patients, respectively. Nine of the 125 patients died within 30 days of the operations, with an operative mortality of 7.2%. Eight of the nine deaths were due to liver failure in the cirrhotic patients who underwent rese

Diagnostic challenges associated with adrenocortical neoplasms arising from adreno-hepatic fusion: a case report of two patients and a literature review.

BACKGROUND: A right adrenal gland may present in the form of adreno-hepatic fusion (AHF), in which the adrenal cells are interspersed among the hepatocytes without septation. This rare, naturally-occurring phenomenon may be associated with preoperative misdiagnosis. We present two cases of adrenal tumor in patients with AHF that were misdiagnosed, despite thorough preoperative work-ups. The findings emphasize the importance of suspecting adrenal tumor arising in AHF for lesions at the periphery of liver segment 7, even when located inside the liver. In addition, AHF can resemble malignant inva

Hepatotoxicity and carcinogenicity in female Sprague-Dawley rats treated with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD): a pathology working group reevaluation.

Risk assessment for 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) has been based in part on the incidences of liver neoplasms in female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats reported in a 2-year study conducted by Dow Chemical Corporation and published in 1978. In the years subsequent to the Dow report, the criteria for the diagnosis of proliferative hepatocellular lesions in the rat have been refined based upon ongoing study of these lesions. Because of this, PATHCO, Inc., was requested to conduct an independent review of the liver slides from the Dow TCDD study in order to assess how the current terminology

Critical evaluation of hepatic scintiangiography for neoplastic tumors of the liver.

Dynamic hepatic scintiangiography increases the specificity of diagnosis of space-occupying lesions of the liver seen on hepatic scintigraphy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare critically this procedure with histologic and radiopaque diagnosis in the evaluation of suspected hepatic neoplasms. Ninety-two patients had hepatic scintiangiography, scintigraphy, and histologic certification. In ten of these patients the findings of radiopaque arteriography were compared with those of hepatic scintiangiography. In all ten patients with hepatoma, the scintiangiographic and histolog

Patients with a new-onset cutaneous sebaceous neoplasm following immunosuppression should be evaluated for Muir-Torre syndrome with germline mismatch repair gene mutation analysis: case reports.

Patients with Muir-Torre syndrome may have a systemic malignancy and a sebaceous neoplasm such as an adenoma, epithelioma, and/or carcinoma. The syndrome usually results from a germline mutation in one or more mismatch repair genes. Iatrogenic or acquired immunosuppression can promote the appearance of sebaceous tumors, either as an isolated event or as a feature of Muir-Torre syndrome and may unmask individuals genetically predisposed to the syndrome. Two iatrogenically immunosuppressed men with Muir-Torre syndrome features are described. Similar to these immunocompromised men, Muir-Torre syn

Endocrine tumors of the pancreas.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Neoplasms of the endocrine pancreas, commonly referenced as pancreatic islet cell tumors, are rare, often well differentiated endocrine neoplasms, whose biology remains poorly characterized. This article reviews the current clinical management of pancreatic islet cell tumors and describes the molecular events that have been studied to guide future therapies of these peculiar neoplasms. RECENT FINDINGS: While some islet cell tumors arise in association with the MEN-1 syndrome, the majority of these neoplasms are sporadic lesions whose underlying genetic and molecular events

CT, MRI, and 18F-FDG PET/CT in a patient with nested stromal epithelial tumor of the liver.

An 11-year-old girl presented with abnormal weight gain and was found to have hepatomegaly. MRI of the abdomen revealed a 20-cm hepatic mass. F-FDG PET/CT showed a large hypermetabolic calcified hepatic mass and couple of mildly hypermetabolic pulmonary nodules with associated intrathoracic lymphadenopathy. Liver biopsy was consistent with nested stromal epithelial tumor of the liver, a rare nonhepatocytic, nonbiliary primary neoplasm of the liver associated with variable calcification and ossification.

Hamartomas and malformations of the liver.

Hamartomas and malformations of the liver are rare and can lead to diagnostic challenges. Most present as mass lesions that can mimic true neoplasms of the liver on imaging and sometimes on histology, one example being focal nodular hyperplasia. The primary cell type in the hamartomas and malformations can be biliary, vascular, or hepatic. Biliary lesions include bile duct hamartomas and simple liver cysts. Other cystic malformations include the ciliated hepatic foregut cysts and mesothelial cysts. Vascular malformations include telangiectasias, arteriovenous malformations, and hereditary lymp

Pathology of AIDS-related liver disease.

Hepatomegaly and abnormalities of serum liver tests are common problems in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Opportunist infections (Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare and cytomegalovirus) and neoplasms (lymphoma, Kaposi's sarcoma) are among the most prevalent hepatic lesions in AIDS. Although Kupffer cells and endothelial cells are potential sites of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) infection, current studies do not indicate that the liver is a major reservoir for this virus. Drug hepatotoxicity, multimicrobial infections of the biliary tree resembling sclerosing cholan

Giant cavernous hemangioma of the liver and multiple primary malignant tumors in a patient with suspected familial inhibition of natural killer cell activity--a case report.

A woman was operated on for a nonepithelial malignant tumor of the left leg and subsequently, for an epithelial carcinoma of the right breast and a borderline malignant tumor of the right ovary. She also developed a giant cavernous hemangioma that caused disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome, which necessitated a left trisegmentectomy of the liver. Her family history suggested a hereditary predisposition to diverse malignant neoplasms, and also to giant cavernous hemangioma of the liver. Immunological evaluation disclosed selective inhibition of natural killer cell activity. Hormonal

Two Interesting Findings in One Case: Xanthogranulomatous Inflammation of the Colon and Isolated Widespread Liver Metastasis of Prostate Cancer on 68 Ga-PSMA PET/CT.

Xanthogranulomatous inflammatory disease is a rare and benign condition that affects various organs. Due to their aggressive nature, the clinical and radiological findings of xanthogranulomatous inflammatory diseases are often misdiagnosed as malignant neoplasms. Prostate cancer metastases are most prevalent in lymph nodes and bones, with less common locations including the lung, liver, and brain. However, widespread liver metastasis is rare without metastatic dissemination to other sites. Herein, we present a case in which these 2 rare conditions were seen together on 68 Ga-PSMA PET/CT.

Cutaneous Basal Cell Carcinoma In Situ: A Review of the World Literature.

Cutaneous basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in situ is a recently recognized subtype of the skin neoplasm in which the abnormal cells are confined to the epidermis. BCC in situ of the skin was previously referred to as a superficial BCC. A review of the world literature has revealed 10 cutaneous BCCs in situ that have been described in nine patients but likely reflect a more general phenomenon. The neoplasm typically presents as an asymptomatic red plaque on the abdomen, upper extremity, back, and chest. Pathologic changes frequently show confluent tumor cells along the epidermal basal layer or super

Primary small cell carcinoma of the lesser omentum.

Although pulmonary small cell carcinoma (SCC) is seen frequently, SCC that originates from the extrapulmonary organs is extremely rare. We herein report a case of a SCC located in the lesser omentum. A 61-year-old male was admitted to our department due to intermittent epigastralgia for 2 months. Ultrasonography (US) revealed an irregular hypoechoic mass measuring about 58 mm × 50 mm × 45 mm under the left lobe of the liver. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed to verify the irregular mass with T1- and T2- weighted images between the left lobe of liver and the stomach. At laparotomy,

Malignant transformation of biliary adenofibroma combined with benign lymphadenopathy mimicking advanced liver carcinoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Biliary adenofibromas (BAFs) are rare primary hepatic neoplasms, some of which can potentially undergo malignant transformation. Here, we describe a rare case of malignant transformation of BAF. CASE SUMMARY: A 51-year-old female was referred to our hospital with epigastric pain. Computed tomography showed a solitary liver mass combined with the enlargement of multiple mediastinal and cervical lymph nodes, clinically mimicking a liver carcinoma with extensive lymph node metastasis. However, core needle biopsy suggested BAF with malignant transformation. Finally, the patient underw
