Neurophysiological alterations during sensory processing in autism - a meta-analysis.

While sensory processing alterations in autism are well-documented, the neurophysiological correlates remain unclear. This meta-analysis examined differences in early event-related potentials (ERP) and event-related fields (ERF) between autistic and non-autistic individuals using electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography to identify neurophysiological alterations that may underlie variations in sensory perception, communication, and social interaction in autism. Following PRISMA guidelines, a database search was conducted for peer-reviewed studies published from January 1980 onwards. Frequency-Dependent Covariance Reveals Critical Spatiotemporal Patterns of Synchronized Activity in the Human Brain.

Recent analyses, leveraging advanced theoretical techniques and high-quality data from thousands of simultaneously recorded neurons across regions in the brain, compellingly support the hypothesis that neural dynamics operate near the edge of instability. However, these and related analyses often fail to capture the intricate temporal structure of brain activity, as they primarily rely on time-integrated measurements across neurons. Here, we present a novel framework designed to explore signatures of criticality across diverse frequency bands and construct a much more comprehensive description

Neural alignment during outgroup intervention predicts future change of affect towards outgroup.

While social psychology studies have shown that paradoxical thinking intervention has a moderating effect on negative attitudes toward members from rival social groups (i.e. outgroup), the neural underpinnings of the intervention have not been studied. Here, we investigate this by examining neural alignment across individuals at different phases during the intervention regarding Covid-19 vaccine-supporters' attitudes against vaccine-opposers. We raise two questions: Whether neural alignment varies during the intervention, and whether it predicts a change in outgroup attitudes measured via a su

Functional connectivity changes in mild cognitive impairment: A meta-analysis of M/EEG studies.

OBJECTIVE: Early synchrony alterations have been observed through electrophysiological techniques in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), which is considered the intermediate phase between healthy aging (HC) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the documented direction (hyper/hypo-synchronization), regions and frequency bands affected are inconsistent. This meta-analysis intended to elucidate existing evidence linked to potential neurophysiological biomarkers of AD. METHODS: We conducted a random-effects meta-analysis that entailed the unbiased inclusion of Non-statistically Significant Unrepor

From MEG to clinical EEG: evaluating a promising non-invasive estimator of defense-related muscle sympathetic nerve inhibition.

Sudden, unexpected stimuli can induce a transient inhibition of sympathetic vasoconstriction to skeletal muscle, indicating a link to defense reactions. This phenomenon is relatively stable within, but differs between, individuals. It correlates with blood pressure reactivity which is associated with cardiovascular risk. Inhibition of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) is currently characterized through invasive microneurography in peripheral nerves. We recently reported that brain neural oscillatory power in the beta spectrum (beta rebound) recorded with magnetoencephalography (MEG) cor

Tinnitus-frequency specific activity and connectivity: A MEG study.

Tinnitus pathophysiology has been associated with an atypical cortical network that involves functional changes in auditory and non-auditory areas. Numerous resting-state studies have replicated a tinnitus brain network to be significantly different from healthy-controls. Yet it is still unknown whether the cortical reorganization is attributed to the tinnitus frequency specifically or if it is frequency-irrelevant. Employing magnetoencephalography (MEG), the current study aimed to identify frequency-specific activity patterns by using an individual tinnitus tone (TT) and a 500 Hz-control tone

Perceptual echoes as travelling waves may arise from two discrete neuronal sources.

Growing evidence suggests that travelling waves are functionally relevant for cognitive operations in the brain. Several electroencephalography (EEG) studies report on a perceptual alpha-echo, representing the brain response to a random visual flicker, propagating as a travelling wave across the cortical surface. In this study, we ask if the propagating activity of the alpha-echo is best explained by a set of discrete sources mixing at the sensor level rather than a cortical travelling wave. To this end, we presented participants with gratings modulated by random noise and simultaneously acqui

Magnetoencephalographic correlates of mood and reward dynamics in human adolescents.

Despite its omnipresence in everyday interactions and its importance for mental health, mood and its neuronal underpinnings are poorly understood. Computational models can help identify parameters affecting self-reported mood during mood induction tasks. Here, we test if computationally modeled dynamics of self-reported mood during monetary gambling can be used to identify trial-by-trial variations in neuronal activity. To this end, we shifted mood in healthy (N = 24) and depressed (N = 30) adolescents by delivering individually tailored reward prediction errors while recording magnetoencephal

Abnormal phase-amplitude coupling characterizes the interictal state in epilepsy.

Objective.Diagnosing epilepsy still requires visual interpretation of electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) by specialists, which prevents quantification and standardization of diagnosis. Previous studies proposed automated diagnosis by combining various features from EEG and MEG, such as relative power (Power) and functional connectivity (FC). However, the usefulness of interictal phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) in diagnosing epilepsy is still unknown. We hypothesized that resting-state PAC would be different for patients with epilepsy in the interictal state and for he

Neurophysiological mechanisms of perspective-taking: An MEG investigation of agency.

According to the embodied cognition framework, sensory and motor areas are recruited during language understanding through simulation processes. Behavioral and imaging findings point to a dependence of the latter on perspective-taking (e.g., first person "I" versus third person "s/he"). The current study aims at identifying possible neurophysiological correlates of perspective in a linguistic context. Twenty healthy participants were measured with magnetoencephalography (MEG) while semantically processing visually presented inflected German verbs in the first- and third-person perspective, sim

Composition within and between Languages in the Bilingual Mind: MEG Evidence from Korean/English Bilinguals.

The ability of the human brain to build complex expressions from simpler parts is fascinating, but the ability of the bilingual brain to do so is perhaps even more remarkable. When highly proficient bilinguals converse, they can fluidly switch from one language to another even inside sentences. Thus, they build expressions using words from more than one language. How are bilinguals able to compose words across different languages in real time? While robust evidence has implicated the left anterior temporal lobe (LATL) for the composition of words within one language, we do not know how the LAT

GABAergic Modulation in Movement Related Oscillatory Activity: A Review of the Effect Pharmacologically and with Aging.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a ubiquitous inhibitory neurotransmitter critical to the control of movement both cortically and subcortically. Modulation of GABA can alter the characteristic rest as well as movement-related oscillatory activity in the alpha (8-12 Hz), beta (13-30 Hz, and gamma (60-90 Hz) frequencies, but the specific mechanisms by which GABAergic modulation can modify these well-described changes remains unclear. Through pharmacologic GABAergic modulation and evaluation across the age spectrum, the contributions of GABA to these characteristic oscillatory activities are beg

The Contribution of Increased Gamma Band Connectivity to Visual Non-Verbal Reasoning in Autistic Children: A MEG Study.

Some individuals with autism spectrum (AS) perform better on visual reasoning tasks than would be predicted by their general cognitive performance. In individuals with AS, mechanisms in the brain's visual area that underlie visual processing play a more prominent role in visual reasoning tasks than they do in normal individuals. In addition, increased connectivity with the visual area is thought to be one of the neural bases of autistic visual cognitive abilities. However, the contribution of such brain connectivity to visual cognitive abilities is not well understood, particularly in children

[The neurobiological foundations of learning disabilities].

INTRODUCTION: Learning disabilities constitute a heterogeneous group of disorders that involve significant alterations in different cognitive domains (acquisition and use of language, reasoning, mathematical skills, visuospatial abilities, and so forth) that are not accounted for by a low level of intelligence, inadequate sociocultural development or lack of academic opportunities. They result from an alteration in basic psychological processes, developmentally linked to an alteration in the central nervous system. Current functional neuroimaging techniques have made it possible to develop a n

Is it time to replace the Wada test and put awake craniotomy to sleep?

The question we address here is whether the invasive presurgical brain mapping approaches of direct cortical stimulation and of the Wada procedure can be replaced by noninvasive functional neuroimaging methods (functional magnetic resonance imaging [fMRI], magnetoencephalography [MEG], transcranial magnetic stimulation and [TMS]). First, we outline the reasons for contemplating such a replacement. Second, we present evidence to the effect that the efficacy of the invasive and noninvasive methods, while suboptimal, is comparable. Third, we discuss additional advantages of noninvasive presurgica

Altered Neuromagnetic Activity in the Default Mode Network in Migraine and Its Subgroups (Episodic Migraine and Chronic Migraine).

BACKGROUND: The differences in the resting state spectral power and functional connectivity of the default mode network between people with migraine without aura (MwoA) and its subgroups differentiated by frequency (episodic migraine (EM) and chronic migraine (CM)) and healthy controls (HC) were investigated using magnetoencephalography. METHODS: In the resting state, the topological spatial structure of the brain in 33 MwoA patients and 22 HC was first studied using magnetoencephalography, followed by probing the neuroelectrical activity of 17 CM and 16 EM patients, to identify damage to the

Neurophysiological consequences of synapse loss in progressive supranuclear palsy.

Synaptic loss occurs early in many neurodegenerative diseases and contributes to cognitive impairment even in the absence of gross atrophy. Currently, for human disease there are few formal models to explain how cortical networks underlying cognition are affected by synaptic loss. We advocate that biophysical models of neurophysiology offer both a bridge from preclinical to clinical models of pathology and quantitative assays for experimental medicine. Such biophysical models can also disclose hidden neuronal dynamics generating neurophysiological observations such as EEG and magnetoencephalog

Electrophysiological brain signatures for the classification of subjective cognitive decline: towards an individual detection in the preclinical stages of dementia.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) prevalence is rapidly growing as worldwide populations grow older. Available treatments have failed to slow down disease progression, thus increasing research focus towards early or preclinical stages of the disease. Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is known to increase the risk of developing AD and several other negative outcomes. However, it is still very scarcely characterized and there is no neurophysiological study devoted to its individual classification which could improve targeted sample recruitment for clinical trials. METHODS: Two hundred fifty

Memantine treatment of complex regional pain syndrome: a preliminary report of six cases.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have confirmed the contribution of the central nervous system (CNS) to the pathogenesis of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), because animal models of neuropathic pain syndromes demonstrate an overexpression of N-methyl-D-aspartate-receptors in the CNS. The aim of this work was to study the influence of a central acting drug-the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist Memantine-in patients with CRPS of one upper extremity. Here we present the results of 6 patients treated with Memantine for 8 weeks. METHODS: All patients developed CRPS after traumatic injury to

Simultaneous tDCS-rTMS stimulation to regulate the language network and improve language ability in Landau-Kleffner syndrome.

Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS) is a rare epileptic syndrome causing language regression. In this preliminary study, we investigated the effects of simultaneous transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on LKS patients and the underlying mechanism based on magnetoencephalography (MEG) network analysis. Three LKS patients were included, all receiving daily stimulation for 15 days in 3 weeks, with MEG data collected to determine stimulation target and measure functional connectivity through normalized phase transfer entropy (PTE).
