OBJECTIVE: In the context of rapid changes regarding practices related to delivery in Africa, we assessed maternal and perinatal adverse outcomes associated with the mode of delivery in 41 referral hospitals of Mali and Senegal.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey nested in a randomised cluster trial (1/10/2007-1/10/2008). The associations between intended mode of delivery and (i) in-hospital maternal mortality, (ii) maternal morbidity (transfusion or hysterectomy), (iii) stillbirth or neonatal death before Day 1 and (iv) neonatal death between 24 hours after birth and hospital discharge wer…

In a nationwide survey of schistosomiasis conducted in Mali from 1984 to 1989, 56265 individuals from 323 villages had their urine examined parasitologically using a filtration technique. From a sample of 242 children in 3 villages, aged 7 to 14 years, urine samples were collected and tested for haematuria using reagent strips. Analysis of the age-specific prevalence rates of Schistosoma haematobium infection showed a strong positive correlation between the prevalence rate in the 7-14 year-old age group, and both the overall prevalence (r = 0.90; P < 0.001) and the prevalences at other ages. A…

BACKGROUND: Skin diseases have recently been identified as a public health problem in developing countries. However, most studies on skin diseases in developing countries, have been conducted in specialized dermatologic centers. Data on the proportion of consultations motivated by skin diseases in nonspecialized health centers in developing countries are scarce. In order to appreciate the request for dermatologic care of the population of a developing African country, we attempted to measure this proportion in health centers of Bamako, the capital of Mali.
METHODS: Eight out-patient health ce…

The prevalence of schistosomiasis amongst the Dogon people in 4 villages and one school of the Bankass district of Mali was determined during 2 surveys in 1992; 1398 urine and 1199 stool samples were examined. The most common schistosome was Schistosoma haematobium, with an overall prevalence of 51.3%; S. mansoni had a prevalence of 12%. No S. intercalatum egg was seen in the stools. Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Bulinus truncatus were found in pools at the base of the Dogon cliffs; Bulinus forskalii was found in smaller numbers in brick pits. Two isolates from urine samples of children were iden…

An epidemiological study of trypanosomiasis was conducted in the rearing areas of dromedary camels in Mali. According to the parasitological and clinical surveys performed, the overall infection rates were 9.5% (29/305) in Western Sahel (region I) and 4.5% (28/627) in the areas of Tombouctou and Gao (region II). The proportion of contaminated herds was 55% in region I and 68% in region II and in some herds the infection rate exceeded 50%. The surveys showed a trend for increasing parasitological prevalence with age. While it was almost nonexistent in young camels less than one year old, it inc…

Potassium (K) supplementation enhances apple (Malus ×domestica) resistance to Cytospora mali, thereby reducing apple Cytospora canker occurrence in the field. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanisms underlying this K-enhanced resistance remain largely unelucidated. Here, we found that brassinosteroid (BR) biosynthesis was active in apple tissues under sufficient K (SK) conditions, resulting in an elevation of brassinolide (BL), the bioactive BR. Exogenous BL application under low K (LK) conditions restored apple resistance in both detached branches and field-grown trees, while the BR inhibitor …

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is caused by Borrelia species transmitted to humans by soft ticks of the genus Ornithodoros. Very little is currently known about the morbidity of this disease in Mali, despite the risk of human co-infection with malaria. The lack of appropriate diagnostic services or technical expertise to differentiate suspected malaria from other causes of febrile illness of unknown origin means that this tick-borne disease remains neglected and under-diagnosed in febrile patients in Mali. Our study investigated the detection of Borrelia crocidurae DNA in febril…

INTRODUCTION: Like many other countries, Mali, a West African country, has encountered various obstacles in the fight against the transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Despite resource constraints, however, the country implemented containment strategies. Therefore, in early 2021, Mali initiated a vaccination campaign as a tangible defense against COVID-19, prioritizing the administration of the first vaccine doses to healthcare personnel. Consequently, we found assessing anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody levels important to gauge the efficacy of vaccines admi…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) are a group of neurological disorders characterized by early-onset seizures that are often resistant to treatment, by electroencephalographic abnormalities, and by developmental delay or regression. Their genetic basis remains largely unelucidated, especially in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We investigated the genetic bases of DEE in three Malian families.
METHODS: Patients underwent clinical evaluation, and DNA was obtained for whole exome sequencing (WES). Putative variants were screened in all available family memb…

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in young children and is associated with subsequent recurrent wheezing illness and asthma (wheeze/asthma). RSV prevention may therefore reduce wheeze/asthma prevalence.
OBJECTIVES: We estimated the contribution of RSV LRTI and the impact of RSV prevention on recurrent wheeze/asthma in Mali.
METHODS: We simulated 12 consecutive monthly birth cohorts in Mali and estimated RSV LRTI cases through 2 years and recurrent wheeze/asthma prevalence at 6 years under different RSV prevention scen…

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health concern, with extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemases being major contributors. Pleural infection (PI) is a severe condition in West Africa, complicated by AMR. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and molecular characteristics of ESBL and carbapenemase-producing enterobacteria in pleural effusions in Mali.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pleural fluid samples from 526 patients with pleuritis were analyzed. Enterobacterial species were isolated and identified, and the prevalence of resistance genes (blaOXA-48, bl…

Endoscopic surgery of ectopic pregnancy is actually the gold standard for the management of fallopian tubal diseases. A survey was conducted to evaluate fertility in patients who underwent endoscopic management for ectopic pregnancy. A retrospective study was conducted at the department of general and endoscopic surgery of the Point "G" teaching hospital, in Bamako, Mali, from January 1st 2007 to December 31, 2016. Forty-eight (48) patients who underwent endoscopic management of tubal ectopic pregnancy and who have been followed up for fertility were included in this study. Statistical tests u…

BACKGROUND: Tsetse fly-transmitted African animal trypanosomosis causes annual losses that run into billions of dollars. The disease is assumed to cause hunger and poverty in most sub-Saharan countries since it represents a serious impediment to sustainable livestock production. Both a cross-sectional and a longitudinal study were carried out from November to December 2007 to evaluate trypanosomosis risk and susceptibility of trypanosomes to trypanocidal drug treatment in village cattle populations in south-east Mali.
METHODS: Eight purposively selected villages participated in the study. In …

BACKGROUND: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are environmental agents that can cause opportunistic pulmonary disease in humans and animals, often misdiagnosed as tuberculosis (TB). In this study, we describe the cases of NTM identified during the first national anti-TB drug resistance survey conducted in Mali and explore associated risk factors.
METHODS: Sputum was collected from people presenting for pulmonary TB diagnosis from April to December 2019, regardless of age. Microscopy-positive patients were enrolled and tested using the Xpert MTB/RIF assay. A patient who tested negative for th…
