A review of malocclusion among individuals with mental and physical disabilities.

Oral health disparities between individuals with disabilities and the general population are widely reported in the literature, and malocclusion is no exception. As the number of people living with disabilities grows, so does the need to explore their oral health status. This review examines the reported prevalence of malocclusion in individuals with Down syndrome (DS), cerebral palsy (CP), cleft disorders, mental disabilities, and physical disabilities from 1976 to 2004. Malocclusion was assessed according to Angle's classifications, the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI), and selected occlusion ch

Development of cephalometric norms using a unified facial and dental approach.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a cephalometric determination of anteroposterior skeletal occlusion on the basis of a clinically rational "gold standard" and objectively determined cut points. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pretreatment cephalograms from 10- to 18-year-old Caucasian patients with a normal vertical face dimension were digitized. Facial profile line drawings were judged by orthodontist raters as Class I, II, or III. Subjects who met all inclusion criteria were divided into Class I, Class II, and Class III on the basis of the matched skeletal (facial) and dental occlusion and comprised our gold s

Impact of orthognathic surgery on oral health-related quality of life in patients with jaw deformities.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the impact of orthognathic surgery on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL) in patients with jaw deformities. The subjects were 65 patients (21 males and 44 females) who underwent orthognathic surgery. The mean age of the patients was 23.6 years. Forty-seven patients had skeletal class III malocclusions, eight patients had skeletal class II, and 10 patients had skeletal class I with facial asymmetry and/or open bite. OHRQOL was assessed using the Japanese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-J54) before and 6 months after surgery. Whil

Dental, skeletal asymmetries and functional characteristics in Class II subdivision malocclusions.

Treatment outcomes of Angle Class II subdivision malocclusions may be compromised because of the uncertainty of the aetiology. Previous studies have reported controversial ideas about the origins, but the existence of a primary contributor still remains unknown. Functional factors have been mentioned as a probable cause, but until now, there have been no supporting data. This study was a cross-sectional investigation of the characteristics of Angle Class II subdivision malocclusion, including dental, skeletal and functional factors, by comparison of the subdivision group and the normal occlusi

Treatment of Vertical Maxillary Excess and Skeletal Class II Malocclusion: A Case Report.

Class II malocclusion is a recurrent problem that may occur at a young age. If treated initially, the malocclusion can be corrected by redirecting the growth without invasive modalities and avoiding orthognathic surgeries. A female patient aged 10 years three months came to the department of orthodontics having a complaint of upper front teeth placed forwardly, diagnosed with skeletal class II due to retrusive mandible and vertical maxillary excess with hyper divergent growth pattern with increased anterior facial height, with Angle's molar class II division 1 malocclusion, increased overjet o

Studying the dynamics of mandibular growth spurts in individuals with Class I and Class II skeletal growth patterns using the Bayesian superimposition by translation and rotation (SITAR) model.

BACKGROUND: Comparing the mandibular growth patterns of Class I and Class II children offer valuable insights into adolescent growth dynamics that are crucial for planning growth modification procedures. AIM: To test the null hypothesis of no class differences (Class I vs. Class II) in mandibular growth spurt parameters (size, timing, intensity) versus clinically relevant differences defined as ≥ 5 mm for size, ≥ 1 year for timing, and ≥ 1 mm/year for intensity. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Data (Condyle-Pogonion distance) available from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation Craniofa

Successful completion of orthodontic therapy in a patient with osteopetrosis: Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic therapy in patients with osteopetrosis (OP) of the jaws has typically been contraindicated owing to the presence of poorly perfused and extremely compact bone, and the potential risk for infection and osteomyelitis. As such, completed orthodontic cases in association with OP, have rarely been published. PATIENT CONCERNS: A patient aged 14 years 6 months, with no known diagnosis of OP, sought orthodontic assessment for anterior crowding. CLINICAL FINDINGS: The patient exhibited a straight facial profile and increased mandibular facial height, competent lips, shallow

Relapse in class II orthognathic surgery: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Relapse after orthognathic surgery seems to depend on diverse factors. Proffit et al. postulated in 2007 a "hierarchy of stability" (Head Face Med 6:66, 2007), ranking posttreatment stability after various orthognathic procedures, but no systematically reviewed evidence was provided. Therefore, the aim of this review was to investigate the extent of class II relapse in orthognathic surgery of Angle class II patients depending on the surgical procedure used. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven databases were searched for randomized and controlled clinical trials to compare relapse in surg

Analysis of Interarch Tooth Size Relationship in Nepalese Subjects with Normal Occlusion and Malocclusions.

INTRODUCTION: A proportional relationship between the maxillary and mandibular teeth size is required for achieving good finish with proper overjet and overbite postorthodontic treatment. The aims and objectives of this study were to determine the anterior and overall Bolton's ratio in Nepalese population, to compare Bolton's ratio between subjects with normal occlusion, Class I malocclusion, and Class II malocclusion, to compare these results with Bolton's norm, and to determine the frequency of clinically significant (beyond 2 SD) tooth size discrepancy compared to Bolton's norm. Revolutionizing Class II Division 1 Malocclusion Treatment With Forsus Appliance: A Clinical Case.

Angle's Class II Division 1 malocclusion is illustrated as a prominent maxilla along with protrusive maxillary anteriors, mandibular retrognathism, or both, often leading to functional and aesthetic concerns. Effective management of this condition in growing patients typically involves a combination of functional and orthodontic appliances to correct dental and skeletal discrepancies. Treating this malocclusion in the deceleration stages of growth is often challenging for orthodontists. This case report exemplifies the potency of Forsus appliance in addressing Class II Division 1 malocclusion

Clinical and lateral cephalometric evaluation of class II elastic therapy in skeletal class II malocclusion cases indicated for fixed functional appliance: An in vivo study.

Management of skeletal Class II malocclusion remains a persistent orthodontic challenge, particularly in selecting an effective alternative to fixed functional appliances. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the clinical and cephalometric effects of Class II elastics in 10 patients with skeletal Class II malocclusion. Pre- and post-treatment cephalometric parameters, including SNA, SNB, ANB and overjet, were compared using paired t-test analysis. Data shows significant improvement in cephalometric angles and overjet reduction, with dentoalveolar changes being more pronounced than skeletal
