A Lhassa Apso is presented in emergency after having been injured by another dog. It was suffering from a mandibular fracture. The clinical exam revealed generalized and excessive mobility of the whole dentition. Radiographs showed generalized jaw bone demineralisation. A blood sample was analysed and revealed chronic renal disease. We came to the conclusion that this dog was suffering from secondary renal hyperparathyroidism. The hypocalcified bone was so thin that a slight trauma induced the mandibular fracture.

A case of haemorrhage from the external auditory meatus associated with condylar fracture is presented. It is important that haemorrhage from the ear following maxillofacial injuries be investigated thoroughly because displacement of the condyle into the middle cranial fossa also presents in this manner. The patient was treated by intermaxillary fixation and packing of the auditory canal. Packing is not only effective for haemostasis but is also important in preventing subsequent stenosis of the auditory canal.

One hundred fifty-seven mandibular fractures in 105 dogs occurred most frequently in male dogs less than 1 year of age. Automobile trauma was the most common cause. Fractures in the premolar region were significantly more frequent than fractures in other regions, and 113 fractures (72%) were open. One hundred forty-two fractures were stabilized, with tape muzzles being the most common method. Despite the significant ongoing development of fixation materials, plate breakages still occur after osteosynthesis of the mandibular condyles. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the complications caused by fixation material breakages in the hope of inspiring the development of new, more durable plates; we analyzed a total of 238 plates used for osteosynthesis in this anatomical region.
