Effectiveness of Selegiline Hydrochlorate in Treating Neurosensory Disorders of the Lower Alveolar Nerve Resulting From Mandibular Sagittal Osteotomy: Preliminary Study.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral nerves transmit nerve signals between periphery and the spinal cord or brain stem. Its function can be compromised by trauma to the nerve, such as those that occur in surgical procedures such as orthognathic surgery. Depending on the type of injury, treatment may be proposed, but this is still a controversial point in literature. Alternative methods that assist in the treatment of paresthesia should be studied, and in this context, selegiline hydrochloride seems to be a promising drug. AIM: Based on the above, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of

Comparative study of skeletal stability between bicortical resorbable and titanium screw fixation after sagittal split ramus osteotomy for mandibular prognathism.

INTRODUCTION: Resorbable screw fixation for orthognathic surgery is widely used in oral and maxillofacial surgery and has several advantages. However, surgeons are concerned about using resorbable screws in orthognathic surgery because of possible postoperative complications such as relapse, screw fracture, and infection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the skeletal stability of bicortical resorbable screw fixation after sagittal split ramus osteotomies for mandibular prognathism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 25 patients who underwent mandibular setback surgery fixed w

In search of a safe zone for sagittal split ramus osteotomy: a cone-beam computed tomography study of the mandibular ramus anatomy.

Unfavourable split is one of the complications of sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and anatomical variation has been attributed as one of the factors. This cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) study aimed to investigate: the ramus thickness; the distance of mandibular lingula (ML) to different ramus landmarks; the horizontal and vertical distance of the ML to the buccal and lingual cortical plates fusion point; and differences between sides of mandible, sex, and ethnicities. This retrospective cross-sectional study consisted of 206 CBCT (412 hemimandibles) of 129 females and 77 males, wit

The stability of an alar cinch suture after Le Fort I and mandibular osteotomies in Japanese patients with Class III malocclusions.

We previously reported a modified technique for the placement of symmetrical cinch sutures after switching from a nasal to an oral endotracheal tube. We undertook a study to assess the effectiveness of our technique and the stability of changes in the nasolabial morphology after bimaxillary surgery. The study group comprised 30 patients aged 17-36 years who had skeletal Class III malocclusion. All patients had bimaxillary surgery with an alar base cinch suture and V-Y closure. The nasal region was measured directly or on cephalograms before, and 1 week and 1 year after operation. The suture di

Intraosseous xanthoma simultaneously treated with mandibular prognathism using sagittal split ramus osteotomy in the mandible: a case report and literature review.

Xanthomas are benign lesions characterized by the aggregation of lipid-laden histiocytes and foamy cells within tissues. Intraosseous xanthomas (IOXs), especially those in the jaw bone, are rare, with only around 50 cases documented. This case report describes an IOX located at an osteotomy site in the mandible during sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO). Preoperative radiographs revealed a heterogenic radiolucent-radiopaque lesion in the right ramus. After meticulous curettage of the lesion, proximal and distal segments were fixed in the semi-rigid plates and screws. At the one-year followup

Office-Based Digital Workflow for Managing Old Mandibular Fracture Malunion: Use of Short-Segment Drilling and Osteotomy Guides With Predictive Holes.

Treating old mandibular fractures with malunion is challenging due to the need for osteotomy and interference between bone segments, complicating occlusal restoration. This technical note introduces a novel office-based digital workflow utilizing surgical guides. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) data were imported into MIMICS software for virtual surgical planning to precisely realign bone fragments based on anatomical and occlusal relationships. A pre-bent reconstruction plate was adapted to a 3-dimensional-printed mandible model, and cone beam CT scans captured detailed screw path data.
