Odontogenic Myxoma of the Maxilla: A Report of Unusual Pediatric Case.

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a rare and locally benign neoplasm of high aggressive behavior found exclusively in the jaws. OM commonly occurs in the second and third decade, its quite rare to find in maxilla that to invading the maxillary sinus completely. The lesion often grows without symptoms and presents as a painless swelling. The radiographic features are variable, and the diagnosis is therefore not easy. This article presents a case of OM of maxilla in a 13-year-old boy, which was previously diagnosed as fibrosseous lesion with the help of CT.

Retrospective study of maxilla growth in a Spanish population sample.

This study has been designed to evaluate the vertical and sagittal changes in the maxilla due to growth. A sample group was chosen of 38 individuals with normal occlusion, composed of 16 females and 22 males between the ages of 8 and 18. The total sample was divided into three groups: prepubescent (8-11 years), pubescent (12-14 years) and post-pubescent (15-18 years). A series of cephalometric angle parameters (SNA, maxillary height, slope of the palatal plane and maxillary depth) and lineal parameters (effective maxillary length, palatal plane length, middle third of the face height and conve…

Unusual presentation of 42 foreign bodies in a child's maxilla.

The diagnosis of foreign bodies (such as radiolucent bristles) in the maxillary sinus, particularly in a child, is difficult. We report an unusual case of a 9-year-old boy who presented with 42 bristles in his left maxillary sinus. The presence of these foreign bodies was noted only during operation for removal of nasal polyps. All the foreign bodies were removed at the same operation. The route of entry of the foreign bodies was found to be a rare self-inflicted oroantral fistula in the interdental region of the upper premolar and molar teeth.

Fixed rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla: possibilities and clinical outcome.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present report was to describe the different treatment approaches available for fixed rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla in the presence of varying hard and soft tissue conditions and to review the clinical outcome of each treatment approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of the published data published from 1980 through 2009 was conducted using electronic databases and manual searching to identify the treatment possibilities for the fixed rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla and report their clinical outcomes. The search terms used, in simple or multiple c…

Two adenomatoid odontogenic tumours of the maxilla: a case report.

An adenomatoid odontogenic tumour (AOT) is a well-recognised benign tumour that enlarges slowly. We report here the rare occurrence of two separate tumours in the anterior maxillary region that have not been documented previously. They were associated with unusual findings such as relatively large size, a supernumerary tooth, rapid growth with cortical perforation, and multilocular appearance with root resorption on plain radiograph.

Rehabilitation of atrophic maxilla: a review of 101 zygomatic implants.

INTRODUCTION: Zygomatic implants are a good rehabilitation alternative for upper maxilla with severe bone reabsorption. These implants reduce the need for onlay-type bone grafting in the posterior sectors and for maxillary sinus lift procedures - limiting the use of bone grafts to the anterior zone of the upper jaw in those cases where grafting is considered necessary. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the survival of 101 zygomatic implants placed in upper maxilla presenting important bone reabsorption, with a follow-up of 1-72 months. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was made of 101 Zygoma(…

Rehabilitation of severely resorbed maxillae with zygomatic implants: an update.

Studies highlight the zygomatic bone as a suitable anatomical structure for implant placements since they cross four corticals. Zygomatic implants were described by Branemark in 1988, since then zygomatic implants are indicated in maxillae with atrophy of the posterior area. They have been used in systemic diseases associated with bone loss in this area, and in patients who have suffered radical surgery for maxillofacial tumors. Computed tomography is recommended before placement in order to discount any pathology of the maxillary sinus. The surgical technique has been slightly modified since …

Solitary plasmacytoma of the maxilla--a case report and review of the literature.

Plasma cell neoplasms have been classified as multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma, and extramedullary plasmacytoma. The solitary plasmacytoma of the maxilla is a rare condition that focuses solely on myelomatous tissue and is not disseminated to other parts of the skeleton. Some lesions appear to be benign and do not recur after complete removal, while others are locally invasive. The dense plasma cell infiltration that commonly is associated with inflammatory lesions within the oral tissues makes diagnosing plasmacytoma at this site problematic. This article presents a case of solitary pl…

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy in the maxilla: a case report.

A 4.5-month-old Chinese boy presented with a bulging mass in the anterior right maxillary region. Clinical features and incisional biopsy examination confirmed the diagnosis of melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy (MNTI). The lesion had first been noted a month before the biopsy. The extent of the lesion was defined via computed tomography, and surgical excision was accomplished through a partial maxillectomy under general anaesthesia. The patient has been irregularly followed-up over the past 8 years, and no evidence of recurrence has been found, either by clinical examination or seria…

[Epidemiology of lip-maxilla-palate clefts in the canton of Vaud].

Epidemiological variables in oral clefts were examined in a cohort of patients with congenital malformations from the canton of Vaud in Switzerland during the years 1990-1999. Among 77'259 newborns or foetuses, 144 cases of oral clefts were identified in the Registre Vaudois des Anomalies Congénitales (RVAC), yielding a total prevalence of 18.6 per 10'000. These clefts consisted of 84 (58%) cases of cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) and 60 (42%) cases of cleft palate only (CP). Associated anomalies were found in 45% of cases. Our results are compared with previous reports in other

Nonsubmerged and submerged implants in the treatment of the partially edentulous maxilla.

BACKGROUND: Dental implants vary in design and surfaces. In addition, different surgical techniques have been used for implant insertion. The ITI Dental Implant System (Straumann AG, Waldenburg, Switzerland) has always required a one-stage technique, whereas the Brånemark System (Nobel Biocare AB, Gothenburg, Sweden) requires a two-stage technique. PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to compare the outcome of fixed partial bridges in the maxilla supported by both ITI and Brånemark implants in a split-mouth design. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with a residual anterior dentition …

Long-term results of distraction osteogenesis of the maxilla and midface.

Since the beginning of 1998, eight patients have been treated by osteodistraction to correct hypoplasia of the maxilla and midface of various origins. Among them were five patients who were treated by high LeFort I osteotomies and insertion of subcutaneous intraoral distraction devices in the malar region. In the remaining three patients, extraoral distraction devices were applied after LeFort II and III osteotomies. Distraction osteogenesis was successful in all cases, resulting in a mean sagittal bone gain measured parallel to the skull base of 9.0 mm (range 4.5-12.0) in the group treated wi…

[Significance of profile prognosis in implant management of the atrophic maxilla].

Postoperative cosmetic results in soft tissue after combined surgical and prosthetic treatment of the extremely atrophic edentulous maxilla by maxillary advancement, sinus lift, and insertion of enosseous implants are rarely considered during preoperative planning. In a prospective study that began in 1993 in 23 patients, the treatment concept was determined by a medical rapid prototyping model and video imaging to predict the soft tissue profile, taking into consideration the appearance of the front teeth. In eight patients, the surgical and/or the prosthetic concept was modified according to…
