Minimally invasive antral membrane balloon elevation in the presence of antral septa: a report of 26 procedures.

Antral septa of the maxillary sinus occurs in approximately one third of patients undergoing posterior maxillary bone augmentation and is considered a relative contraindication for lateral maxillary window ("hinge osteotomy"). We present the results of 26 consecutive cases of patients with septated maxillary sinus who underwent minimally invasive antral membrane balloon elevation (MIAMBE) followed by bone augmentation and implant fixation. After undergoing preprocedural assessment and signing an informed consent, 57 consecutive patients were referred for posterior maxillary bone augmentation.

Nasolabial morphologic changes after a Le Fort I osteotomy: a three-dimensional anthropometric study.

After a Le Fort I osteotomy, nasal and labial changes are sometimes undesirable. The aim of this study was to perform a three-dimensional evaluation of the morphologic changes of the nose and lips after a Le Fort I osteotomy with a three-dimensional laser scanner.Twelve female patients who underwent a Le Fort I osteotomy with bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (mean age, 24.2 y) were selected. Three-dimensional facial morphology was measured immediately after surgery and 6 months after surgery with a three-dimensional laser scanner. Analysis of the three-dimensional data was performed wi

Endoscopically assisted Le Fort I osteotomy using an ultrasonic scalpel: a feasibility study in cadavers.

PURPOSE: Drawbacks to conventional Le Fort I osteotomy include bleeding, infection, and relapse. The open approach predisposes itself to each of these complications through various means. We performed an endoscopically assisted Le Fort I osteotomy with an ultrasonic scalpel in cadavers to develop a new technique that minimizes such complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Endoscopically assisted Le Fort I osteotomy was performed in 4 fresh adult human cadavers. Two 1-cm gingivobuccal sulcus incisions were used to approach the maxilla. Osteotomies were carried out with an ultrasonic scalpel from

Orthodontic-Surgical Approach for Treating Skeletal Class III Malocclusion With Severe Maxillary Deficiency in Isolated Cleft Palate.

Orthodontic treatment in patients with orofacial cleft such as cleft lip and palate or isolated cleft palate is challenging, especially when the patients exhibit severe maxillary growth retardation. To correct this deficiency, maxillary expansion and protraction can be performed in the first phase of orthodontic treatment. However, in some cases, the malocclusion cannot be corrected by these procedures, and thus, skeletal discrepancy remains when the patients are adolescents. These remaining problems occasionally require various orthognathic treatments according to the degree of the discrepanc

Effect of Orthognathic Surgery on Movement of the Cheilion.

The cheilion (Ch), corner of the mouth, is the soft-tissue landmark where the upper and lower lips intersect. Orthognathic surgery can modify Ch position, which can affect facial esthetics. The aims were to evaluate Ch movements resulting from Le Fort I maxillary advancement with maxillary impaction or downgrafting, and with mandibular advancement or setback, and to investigate relationships between surgical movements and Ch movements. The 45 patients had undergone bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy with Le Fort I advancement surgery. They were divided into 4 groups according to surgical

Use of distraction osteogenesis for the correction of deviated nasal septum and premaxilla in a horse.

A 13-month-old female Andalusian was evaluated because of a congenital left deviation of the maxilla and nasal septum, which had resulted in a gross malocclusion of the maxillary incisor teeth. Surgical correction of a deviated nasal septum and premaxilla in a horse was first reported in 1978 and involved a pre-maxilla osteotomy and use of an autogenous rib graft, with a nasal septum osteotomy performed in a second surgery; to the authors' knowledge, no alternative surgical treatments have since been described. In this horse, a new surgical treatment by distraction osteogenesis without nasal s

Case report MM. Surgical-orthodontic correction of bilateral buccal crossbite (Brodie syndrome).

A surgical approach to treatment was required for this 35-year-old patient to correct a malocclusion characterized by a bilateral buccal crossbite. Surgical procedures included a LeFort 1 osteotomy to reduce maxillary width and correct the vertical asymmetry. The mandible was lengthened with a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy. Treatment options for the nongrowing patient are limited in the correction of severe skeletal disharmonies.

[Analysis and comparison of pulp vitality after total and segmental LeFort I osteotomy].

A more systematic electrical testing of pulp vitality demonstrated that the recovery rate of pulp vitality was 89.5% after 12 months of total and segmental LeFort I osteotomy. Segmental LeFort I osteotomy only imposed an interference to the speed of pulp vitality recovery. In other words, the recovery rate of pulp vitality in segmental LeFort I osteotomy was comparable to that in total LeFort I osteotomy. Maxillary segmentation inflicted a minimum damage to its adjacent teeth if clinical manipulation was meticulous and skillful. Interdental osteotomy did not exert an apparent effect on the rec

Maxillary distraction resulting in facial advancement at Le Fort III level in cleft lip and palate patients: a report of two cases.

An 18-year-old female and a 14-year-old male who had previously received surgery for primary repair of a nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate (including alveolar defect bone grafting) unintentionally developed facial advancement at the Le Fort III level after surgical correction of their maxillary hypoplasia. The Le Fort I osteotomy, originally performed for their maxillary dentoalveolar hypoplasia, was an incomplete osteotomy. It was performed without down-fracture, leaving the pterygomaxillary and septal junctions intact. The gradual advancement of the maxilla during distraction osteogenesis wa
