[Osteoplastic operation of maxillary sinus (author's transl)].

An osteoplastic modification of the Caldwell-Luc operation is described. Starting from two small drill holes a quadrangular lid is cut out of the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus using the reciprocating micro-saw after Feldmann. This allows adequate access to the cavity as in the classic procedure. If required the window can be extended in the superior medial angle with rongeurs. After completing the operation within the cavity the osseous lid is reimplanted and fixed with 3 sutures of chromic catgut, which are threaded through small drill holes. By this prodecure prolapse of fat into the …

Chronic hyponatremia based on maxillary sinus mass.

SUMMARY: This is a case report of a child with chronic hyponatremia due to the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) as a paraneoplastic manifestation of olfactory neuroblastoma (OFN). We hereby report a clinical presentation as well as a pragmatic approach to one of the most common electrolytic disorders in the pediatric population and have emphasized the necessity of involving the sinonasal area in the diagnostic procedure while evaluating possible causes of SIADH. This report indicates that the chronicity of the process along with the gradual onset of hyponatremia

Maxillary sinus perforation by orthodontic anchor screws.

To facilitate safe placement of orthodontic anchor screws (miniscrews), we investigated the frequency of maxillary sinus perforation after screw placement and the effect of sinus perforation on screw stability. Maxillary sinus perforations involving 82 miniscrews (diameter, 1.6 mm; length, 8 mm) were evaluated using cone-beam computed tomography. All miniscrews were placed in maxillary alveolar bone between the second premolar and first molar for anchorage for anterior retraction in patients undergoing first premolar extraction. The placement torque and screw mobility of each implant were dete…

Dental implant migration in grafted maxillary sinus.

BACKGROUND: Migration of oral implants through a previously consolidated graft is an extremely rare event. We reported 2 cases of migration … ly verified stable grafts. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Implants migration through composite graft after maxillary sinus elevation was reported. Reasons for this to occur might be due to the following: fail to achieve implant primary stability, Schneiderian membrane perforation, or graft resorption due to increased osteoclastic activity.

Implant survival rates after maxillary sinus augmentation.

Implant therapy in the atrophic posterior maxilla becomes challenging in the presence of reduced maxillary bone height. Sinus augmentation can be performed for resolving this condition prior to implant placement. The aim of this article was therefore to evaluate implant survival rates in the grafted sinus taking into account the influence of the implant surface, graft material, and implant placement timing. A systematic review of the literature was performed. Articles retrieved from electronic databases were screened using specific inclusion criteria, and data extracted were divided according

Progressive maxillary sinus hypoplasia with open ostium.

Maxillary sinus hypoplasia (MSH) is an uncommon clinical entity that represents a persistent decrease in sinus volume resulting from a centripetal retraction of the maxillary sinus walls. Pathophysiology of MSH is still controversial. Obstruction of the maxillary sinus ostium and negative pressure in the sinus has been mostly implicated in the development of MSH in most of the reported cases. We present a case of progressive unilateral MSH, which has an open ethmoid infundibulum and also presence of an open accessory ostium on the same side. Based on these findings, we propose that ventilatory…

Paranasal sinus radiology, Part 4B: Maxillary sinuses.

The maxillary sinus is frequently involved by inflammatory change. It is also the sinus that is most often affected by intrinsic or neighboring neoplasms. Since neoplasia and inflammatory disease may mimic each other, radiologic examination often becomes the principal means of differentiating them. Principles of radiologic diagnosis, with attention to changes in the various bony margins in maxillary disease processes, form the basis of this article.
