Maxillofacial, laryngeal and cervical trauma - how can we do better as the first responder? A 3-step approach for pre-emptive diagnosis and early management.

BACKGROUND: Concomitant maxillofacial, laryngeal and cervical spine (MLC) injuries in trauma remains a rare occurrence. It can result in mortality if not diagnosed and managed expeditiously in the field. An algorithm for efficient diagnosis and early management of patients with MLC injuries can be lifesaving. METHODS: We conducted a narrative literature review of PubMed and Cochrane databases and integrated the findings with a retrospective case series of nine consecutive patients with concomitant MLC injuries over a 23-year period at the National University Hospital, Singapore. The primary ob

Equine-related facial fractures.

Horseback riding is a common recreational activity that can cause injuries to both mounted and dismounted participants. This study examines the patterns of equine-related maxillofacial fractures presenting in a tertiary referral centre. Patients presenting over an 11-year period from 1996 to 2006 with equine-related maxillofacial fractures were identified through the trauma database. The extent of the injuries, surgical treatment and follow-up details were documented. 45 patients were identified, with an increasing incidence over the study period. 69% were male and 31% female. 31% of patients

Incidence and patterns of maxillofacial trauma-a retrospective analysis of 3611 patients-an update.

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial fractures occur in a significant proportion worldwide and can occur as an isolated injury or in combination with other severe injuries including cranial, spinal, and upper and lower body injuries requiring prompt diagnosis with possible emergency interventions. The epidemiology of facial fractures varies with regard to injury type, severity, and cause and depends on the population studied. Hence, understanding of these factors can aid in establishing clinical and research priorities for effective treatment and prevention of these injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In t

Assessment of quality of life in patients with surgically treated maxillofacial fractures.

Background: The complex nature of maxillofacial injuries can affect the surgical treatment outcomes and general well-being of the patient. To evaluate the efficiency of the surgical treatment, assessment of the quality of life (QOL) of the patients is of vital importance. Due to the absence of an exclusive QOL assessment tool for maxillofacial fractures, we introduce the 'Twenty-point quality of life assessment in facial trauma patients in Indian population'. The aim of this study was to assess and evaluate the QOL following surgical management of maxillofacial trauma patients based on the sev

Traumatic Hemifacial Avulsion and Degloving Injury With Left Zygomaticomaxillary Complex Fracture: A Case Report.

Managing gross maxillofacial injuries poses significant challenges due to potential complications such as airway obstruction, cervical spine injuries, and damage to cranial structures. The resultant deformities from these injuries can have enduring psychological effects, which, if left unaddressed, can be devastating. This report outlines an approach for a patient with a history of a bull gore injury wherein a 49-year-old male presented to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, reporting an alleged animal attack. The patient had experienced avulsion of the left eye and degloving inj

Management of frontal sinus fractures.

Frontal sinus fractures are relatively uncommon maxillofacial injuries, making up only 5 to 12 percent of all facial fractures. Associated intracranial, ophthalmologic, and other maxillofacial injuries are very common because of the force of injury required to fracture the frontal bone. High-resolution computed tomography of the frontal region in multiple planes is essential for predicting the degree of frontal injury, associated injuries, and the type of procedure indicated. Exploration of the frontal sinus with reduction alone is reserved for a small minority of very simple fractures. Most f

Cervical spine injuries.

This article describes the anatomy of the cervical spine and the most common types of fractures associated with the cervical spine. Cervical spinal cord syndromes are also reviewed because such syndromes discovered during neurologic examinations frequently provide the first clue that there is an underlying spinal cord injury. Because most associated maxillofacial and spinal injuries occur in the setting of motor vehicle accidents, it is particularly important for the maxillofacial surgeon to be cognizant of the injuries, particularly in the context of the need for facial/cranial surgery. An epidemiological study of maxillofacial fractures requiring surgical treatment at a tertiary trauma centre between 2005 and 2010.

The epidemiology of maxillofacial fractures shows considerable regional variation as a result of local demographic and socioeconomic factors. We have assessed the epidemiological characteristics of such fractures at our centre in The Netherlands. The medical records of 394 patients who were treated surgically for maxillofacial fractures between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2010 were analysed retrospectively. The male:female ratio was 3:1. There was a peak incidence in the second and third decades of life among men. The number of injured patients/year remained stable during the selected perio
