[Surveillance of measles in Germany].

In Germany, as in the entire WHO Region Europe, the goal has been set to eliminate measles by the year 2007. In order to achieve this, high vaccination rates of >/= 95 % are necessary as well as an intensive surveillance consisting of a continuous record of the age and region-specific incidence, vaccination rates and the seroprevalence. BACKGROUND: Measles (rubeola), a common childhood exanthema, occurs infrequently in adults. Vaginal mucositis in association with measles is not commonly described. CASE: During a recent measles epidemic, 2 female patients presented with high fever, myalgia, exanthema, and prostration. On examination, each patient had marked inflammation and tenderness of the vaginal mucosa, prompting the presumptive diagnosis of toxic shock syndrome. A review of 598 cases of measles admitted to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, (Nigeria) between January 1982 and December 1984, was undertaken. One hundred and fourteen children (19%) had measles by the age of nine months, and the number increased to 298 (49.8%) by 12 months of age. There were 207 (34.6%) cases during the second year of life and only 93 children second year of life and only 93 children (15.5%) were above two years of age. The purpose of this study was to determine whether nosocomial bacteremias occurred more frequently in patients admitted with severe measles compared with general pediatric admissions. In a retrospective survey of 977 blood culture reports during a 4-year period, 1985 to 1988, the incidence of nosocomial bacteremias in patients with measles was found to be on the average of 3.37/100 admissions/year, approximately 6 times that of general pediatric patients (0.57). Measles immunization in Iran.

Mass immunization with live measles vaccine has been carried out in rural Iran since 1968. Two strains have been used: primary baby calf kidney cell-adapted Sugiyama strain and human diploid cell-adapted AIK strain. More than 94% of the susceptible children experimentally vaccinated with either of the two vaccines have shown seroconversion.
