Navigating menstruation in adolescents with Down Syndrome: A mixed-methods study of caregiver reflections and adolescent voices in the UK.

Adolescents with Down syndrome face unique menstrual health challenges, yet their experiences remain under-researched. This study aimed to i … n caregivers anticipated, 91% of 120 caregivers of adolescents who had reached menarche had ongoing menstruation concerns. While products like period underwear ("magic pants") improved independence and simplified care, key remaining concerns included: heavy periods (48%); personal care (45%); menstrual pain (45%); and the communication of pain (26%). The impac …

Is retrograde menstruation a universal, recurrent, physiological phenomenon? A systematic review of the evidence in humans and non-human primates.

STUDY QUESTION: What are the quantitative, qualitative, and temporal patterns of retrograde mentruation? SUMMARY ANSWER: The extreme quantitative and qualitative heterogeneity of the available studies prevents the definitive conclusion that retrograde menstruation is a universal and consistent phenomenon during the reproductive period. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Retrograde menstruation has been defined as a universal, physiological phenomenon that occurs similarly in about 90% of menstruators during the reproductive period. However, uncertainties still exist in terms of the event frequency, tota…

Incarceration, menstruation and COVID-19: a viewpoint of the exacerbated inequalities and health disparities in South African correctional facilities.

PURPOSE: The menstrual health and menstrual hygiene management (MHM) of incarcerated women remains relatively low on the agenda of public health interventions globally, widening the inequitable access of incarcerated women to safe and readily available menstrual health products (MHP). The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely impacted on the MHM gains made in various development sectors in the global North and South, through its amplification of vulnerability for already at-risk populations. This is especially significant to developing countries such as South Africa where the incarcerated female pop

Plasma insulin and glucagon concentrations and biochemical variables in regularly menstruating females with ovulatory and anovulatory menstrual cycles.

Ovarian hormones are known to affect endocrine pancreas function. However, data concerning the effects of anovulatory menstrual cycles in regularly menstruating women on endocrine pancreas and blood metabolites are lacking. We examined plasma insulin, glucagon, glucose, lactate, urea and glycerol concentrations in reproductive-age, regularly menstruating females classified as ovulating or non-ovulating on the basis of basal body temperature measurements and plasma 17beta-estradiol and progesterone determinations. All measurements were performed twice--in the follicular and again in the luteal

Discrimination, Stigma and Taboo Towards the Three Ms' Working Body: A Systematic Review Around Menstruation, Maternity and Menopause.

Menstruation, maternity and menopause are three natural and everyday experiences in most women's lives, but they often intersect in complex ways with career paths and workplace dynamics. In this study, the existing literature on these "three Ms" is systematically examined in relation to taboo, discrimination and stigma in work context, taking into account the PRISMA guidelines. A total of 84 articles from Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science databases were analyzed. Most of the articles included refer to studies conducted in post-industrial, English-speaking countries, and only a few of them were…

Crosstalk between Extracellular Matrix Stiffness and ROS Drives Endometrial Repair via the HIF-1α/YAP Axis during Menstruation.

Although the menstrual cycle driven by sex steroid hormones is an uncomplicated physiological process, it is important for female health, fertility and regenerative biology. However, our understanding of this unique type of tissue homeostasis remains unclear. Here, we examined the biological effects of mechanical force by evaluating the changing trend of extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness, and the results suggested that ECM stiffness was reduced and that breaking of mechanotransduction delayed endometrium repair in a mouse model of simulated menses. We constructed an ECM stiffness interferen

IUD in first-trimester abortion: immediate intrauterine contraceptive devices insertion vs delayed insertion following the next menstruation bleeding.

PURPOSE: Approximately 21 days after an abortion, ovulation occurs in 50 % of women. Installation of an IUD directly after induced or spontaneous abortion offers immediate contraceptive protection. The purpose of the present study was to weigh up contraceptive safety and adverse reactions of IUD inserted directly after first-trimester abortion under general or paracervical anesthesia as against the fitting of IUD in the days of the next menstrual cycle without anesthesia. METHOD: During the period May 1987 to October 2010, 73 women (Group A) underwent an immediate post-abortion insertion IUD

The female Gaucher patient: the impact of enzyme replacement therapy around key reproductive events (menstruation, pregnancy and menopause).

BACKGROUND: The principal manifestations of type 1 Gaucher disease (GD) (increased risk of bleeding, anaemia, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly and bone disease) are likely to affect females during reproductive events such as menarche and menstruation; fertility, pregnancy, parity, delivery and lactation; and menopause. In order to determine the optimal management of female Gaucher patients based on available data, we examine reproductive events and GD in untreated and alglucerase and/or imiglucerase-treated females. METHODS: A panel of international clinicians experienced in the management of GD re…

Iron status in 268 Danish women aged 18-30 years: influence of menstruation, contraceptive method, and iron supplementation.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of menstruation, method of contraception, and iron supplementation on iron status in young Danish women, and to assess whether iron deficiency could be predicted from the pattern of menstruation. Iron status was examined by measuring serum (S-) ferritin and hemoglobin (Hb) in 268 randomly selected, healthy, menstruating, nonpregnant Danish women aged 18-30 years. Iron deficiency (S-ferritin <16 microg/l) was observed in 9.7%, of the women, iron deficiency anemia (S-ferritin < 13 microg/l and Hb < 121 g/l) in 2.2%. Iron supplementation,…

Increased incidence of menstruation-associated bactericidal defects in neutrophils from women who have recovered from toxic shock syndrome.

There is a growing suspicion that a host abnormality may contribute to the pathogenesis of toxic shock syndrome (TSS). We found that females (5 of 5) who had recovered from TSS had transient, menstruation-associated decreases (greater than or equal to 9%) in the ability of their neutrophils to kill Staphylococcus aureus. 502A in vitro more often (P = 0.040 by Fisher's exact test) than non-TSS-affected control subjects (5 of 12). In addition, the average decrease in bactericidal activity in neutrophils obtained during menstruation from recovered TSS patients was 30 +/- 9% compared to 7 +/- 7% f…

Adipokine Profile Signature in Adolescent Girls with Menstrual Disorders and Hyperandrogenism Differs from That of Regularly Menstruating Girls.

Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with obesity, numerous metabolic complications, and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Adipokines, secreted by adipose tissue, may contribute to the development of these cardiometabolic disturbances. The aim of this study was to investigate the adipokine levels and their relationship with metabolic status in adolescent girls with PCOS. Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 66 adolescent girls with PCOS (mean age: 16.5 ± 1.08 years; study group, SG) and 30 regularly menstruating girls (mean age: 16.2 ± 1.

The perceived knowledge of the menstruation cycle and adjustment of swimming sets by swimming coaches based on menstrual-related issues.

BACKGROUND: Menstruation is the recurring discharge of the endometrial lining of the uterus as menstrual blood and tissue. The menstruation cycle affects most adolescent females and, although largely overlooked, affects women participating in sports. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether coaches were aware of their swimmers' menstrual cycles and whether coaches considered this information when adjusting training sets. METHODS: Within the case study, a partial mixed-method, sequential dominant status approach was used. Data were collected in the form of questionnaires, fo…
