Determination of Menthol in Plasma and Urine by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS).

Menthol, a monoterpene, is a principal component of peppermint oil and is used extensively in consumer products as a flavoring aid. It is also commonly used medicinally as a topical skin coolant; to treat inflammation of the mucous membranes, digestive problems, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); and in preventing spasms during endoscopy and for its spasmolytic effect on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract. Menthol has a half life of 3-6 h and is rapidly metabolized to menthol glucuronide which is detectable in urine and serum following menthol use. We describe a method for the de

Peppermint oil (Mintoil) in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome: a prospective double blind placebo-controlled randomized trial.

INTRODUCTION: The use of peppermint oil in treating the irritable bowel syndrome has been studied with variable results probably due to the presence of patients affected by small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, lactose intolerance or celiac disease that may have symptoms similar to irritable bowel syndrome. AIM: The aim of the study was to test the effectiveness of enteric-coated peppermint oil in patients with irritable bowel syndrome in whom small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, lactose intolerance and celiac disease were excluded. METHODS: Fifty-seven patients with irritable bowel syndr

Peppermint oil.

Peppermint leaf and peppermint oil have a long history of use for digestive disorders. Recent evidence suggests that enteric-coated peppermint oil may be effective in relieving some of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. A combination product including peppermint oil and caraway oil seems to be moderately effective in the treatment of non-ulcer dyspepsia. Topical application of peppermint oil may be effective in the treatment of tension headache. Because of its relaxing effects on smooth muscle, peppermint oil given via enema has been modestly effective for relief of colonic spasm in pat

A Multifunctional Bioactive Nanoscale Coating Deposited by Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Polymerization of Peppermint Essential Oil.

Implanted and indwelling medical devices remain challenged by infection, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation, underscoring the need for multifunctional surface coatings to holistically address these complications. Peppermint essential oil is inherently antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory, yet its integration into stable, contact-active coatings is limited by fabrication constraints. Here, we present a one-step atmospheric pressure plasma polymerisation process that converts peppermint essential oil into a conformal, cross-linked coating that preserves precursor-derived fun

Randomized trial: Peppermint oil (menthol) pharmacokinetics in children and effects on gut motility in children with functional abdominal pain: 540 mg vs. 900 mg dose comparison.

AIMS: There is a paucity of information on the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of menthol, the active ingredient in peppermint oil (PMO). We studied the PK of menthol (540 and 900 mg) in children and measured their effects on gut transit/contractility. METHODS: Children 7-12 years of age with functional abdominal pain underwent wireless motility capsule (WMC) testing. One week later, they were randomized to 540 mg or 900 mg of oral enteric-coated PMO. Blood was sampled over 24 h to determine menthol PK. The WMC test was repeated while they took their respective dose (180 mg th
