Small Bowel Obstruction Secondary to Endometriosis and Hydrosalpinx.

We describe the case of a 32-year-old female who presented to the emergency department (ED) with a 3-day history of severe epigastric abdominal pain accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and constipation. Past medical history was significant for known right hydrosalpinx and previous pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), without past surgical history. Clinical examination revealed a hemodynamically stable patient with a soft but distended abdomen, tenderness in the epigastric region, without signs of peritonitis. Bloodwork including white blood cell count, electrolytes, and lactic acid was unremarkable

Distinct roles of VE-cadherin for development and maintenance of specific lymph vessel beds.

Endothelial cells line blood and lymphatic vessels and form intercellular junctions, which preserve vessel structure and integrity. The vascular endothelial cadherin, VE-cadherin, mediates endothelial adhesion and is indispensible for blood vessel development and permeability regulation. However, its requirement for lymphatic vessels has not been addressed. During development, VE-cadherin deletion in lymphatic endothelial cells resulted in abortive lymphangiogenesis, edema, and prenatal death. Unexpectedly, inducible postnatal or adult deletion elicited vessel bed-specific responses. Mature de

Midgut malrotation and ovarian dermoid cyst as a dual cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Midgut malrotation is a congenital anomaly characterized by impaired rotation of the gut around the superior mesenteric artery during embryonic development. It is one of the most common causes of neonatal intestinal obstruction. A dermoid cyst arises from the trapping of ectodermal elements during embryonic development. CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-day-old female neonate was brought to the hospital with a history of bilious emesis and failure to pass stool. The antenatal history was uneventful. She was diagnosed with intestinal obstruction. The patient was treated initi

Parenchyma-sparing resection for a complex jejunal duplication with a shared mesenteric blood supply: a case report.

Gastrointestinal (GI) duplication cysts present significant diagnostic and surgical challenges, particularly with complex anatomy. We report a 2-year-old male with chronic obstructive symptoms caused by a mixed-type jejunal duplication. While initial ultrasound was equivocal, contrast-enhanced computed tomography delineated a cystic mass on the mesenteric border, guiding surgical planning. Intraoperatively, a shared mesenteric blood supply with the native jejunum precluded complete resection. A parenchyma-sparing partial excision of the symptomatic, non-communicating portion was performed, pre

Development of renal adenocarcinoma in a ferret with renal cortical cysts (Mustela putorius furo).

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 5.5-year-old 0.929-kg spayed female domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) underwent serial abdominal ultrasonographic and clinicopathologic examinations after multiple renal cysts were detected bilaterally during a routine examination. CLINICAL FINDINGS: The ferret was apparently healthy at the start of the monitoring period and had no clinical signs for > 20 months. Four months after the initial examination, the largest cyst became increasingly mineralized; 17 months after detection, it had increased in size and become amorphous, and the ferret's plasma BUN concentratio

A Rare Case of Isolated Hindgut Malrotation with Internal Hernia and Coexisting Enteric Duplication Cyst.

An eight-year-old boy presented with a history of intermittent episodes of spastic abdominal pain accompanied by bilious vomiting. Imaging revealed an abnormal position of the large bowel loop, which was associated with an abnormal vascular course. Additionally, a mesenteric cystic lesion was found in relation to the small bowel. A possibility of isolated hindgut malrotation with an enteric duplication cyst was suggested based on these findings. The surgical team confirmed this diagnosis during the procedure. Furthermore, they discovered an internal hernia intraoperatively, with a defect in th

Overreliance on Radiological Findings Leading to Misdiagnosed Giant Retroperitoneal Ganglioneuroma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Ganglioneuroma is a rare, benign, well-differentiated neurogenic tumor most commonly located in the posterior mediastinum or retroperitoneum. Giant ganglioneuromas are even less common; this is only the 19th reported case in literature to date. We present a case of a giant retroperitoneal ganglioneuroma in a five-year-old child, which on imaging mimicked a mesenteric cyst and posed various challenges in its management. Histopathology later confirmed our misdiagnosis and revealed the tumor to be a ganglioneuroma. This unique case serves as a lesson for clinicians to not operate before receiving

Congenital absence of the portal vein associated with focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver and congenital choledochal cyst: a case report.

A congenital absence of the portal vein (CAPV) is a rare malformation, which almost is always associated with other anomalies such as hepatic tumors and cardiac malformations. This case report describes a 3-year-old girl with a congenital absence of the portal vein, focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) of the liver, and a congenital choledochal cyst (CCC). Angiography findings showed the mesenteric vein and splenic vein to be joined together to form a common trunk that entered the inferior vena cava directly above the liver. This is the first known reported case of CAPV with concurrent CCC. J Pedia

Spinal neurenteric cysts: Associated developmental anomalies and rationale of surgical approaches.

BACKGROUND: Neurenteric cysts (NC) occur due to failure of separation of neurectoderm from endoderm at the 3rd week of embryogenesis. This study focuses on key clinico-radiological features of NCs, with emphasis on surgical nuances involved in resecting anteriorly placed NC, especially at the foramen magnum (FM). METHOD: Sixteen consecutive patients having a spinal NC were included. Their clinico-radiological status, surgical nuances and follow-up status were noted. RESULTS: The duration of spasticity/paraparesis/quadriparesis ranged from 15 days to 48 months. Twelve patients had an intradur

A case report of a rare etiology of an abdominal cystic lesion in adults: Peritoneal inclusion cysts.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Peritoneal inclusion cysts (PICs), also known as peritoneal mesothelial cysts, are rare, benign cystic lesions primarily occurring in the abdominopelvic cavity of premenopausal women with histories of pelvic surgery or inflammation. These cysts can present with nonspecific symptoms and may mimic other abdominal pathologies, making diagnosis challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old male with no significant medical history, who experienced progressive nonspecific abdominal pain over several months. Clinical examination revealed a poorly defined mass in the righ

Visualization of a Y-configuration and peristalsis on prenatal sonography: The pathognomonic sign of an ileal duplication cyst.

OBJECTIVE: Enteric duplication cysts are a rare congenital malformation that consists of a cystic formation adjacent to the native gastrointestinal tract. A double wall appearance on fetal abdominal sonography is highly suggestive of its diagnosis. However, this sign also can be seen in an ovarian cyst, a mesenteric cyst, and a Meckel's diverticulum. To the best of our knowledge, this case is the first report of accurate prenatal diagnosis based upon the presence of a Y-configuration and peristalsis on prenatal sonography. We herein present prenatal and postnatal images including ultrasonogram

[A case of neonatal gastrointestinal duplication].

Gastrointestinal duplications are defined as tubular or cystic malformations of a segment of the digestive tract, from the oral cavity to the anus. They are rare. Prenatal diagnosis ca be made in patients with a voluminous cyst. We here report the case of a 33-year-old primiparous woman with no previous medical-surgical history who was poorly screened. She just underwent ultrasound scan at 8 weeks of amenorrhea (WA). During the third trimester of pregnancy ultrasound showed anechoic nonvascularized cyst measuring 3cm located in the upper pelvis. It was anteriorly located; the kidneys and the b

Pancreatic cancer accompanied by a moderate-sized pseudocyst with extrapancreatic growth.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer accompanied by a moderate-sized pseudocyst with extrapancreatic growth is extremely rare. Diagnosis of pancreatic cancer on preoperative imaging is difficult when the pancreatic parenchyma is compressed by a pseudocyst and becomes unclear. Despite advances in imaging techniques, accurate preoperative diagnosis of cystic lesions of the pancreas remains difficult. In this case, it was challenging to diagnose pancreatic cancer preoperatively as we could not accurately assess the pancreatic parenchyma, which had been compressed by a moderate-sized cystic lesion with e

Sonographic diagnosis of bowel obstruction presenting with fluid-filled loops of bowel.

When intestinal obstruction presents with fluid-filled bowel loops instead of air-distended loops, subtle elongated masses representing these bowel loops may be missed on plain abdominal radiographs. In these cases, ultrasound will show sausage-shaped, cystic structures, with uneven margins representing mucosal folds, distributed throughout the abdomen and sometimes accompanied by peristalsis. These features differentiate fluid-filled bowel loops from other cystic structures in the abdomen and help make a diagnosis of bowel obstruction.

Primary Leiomyosarcoma of the Mesentery: A Case Report.

Mesenteric masses are infrequent lesions ranging from benign cysts to aggressive malignancies and often present a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. The mesentery is a frequent recipient of metastases from the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and biliary cancers. Primary mesenteric tumors are relatively rare, mostly mesenchymal in origin and benign in nature. Examples include gastrointestinal stromal tumors and smooth muscle tumors. We describe a 50-year-old woman, who presented with a lump in the left hypochondrium along with altered bowel habits of 2 years' duration. Imaging revealed a c

Abdominal cystic lymphangioma mimicking ovarian mass: A case report and literature review.

Cystic lymphangiomas are uncommon benign lesions extremely rare in the adult population. Most cases are found in the neck and axillary regions; while <1% of patients present with cystic lymphangiomas in the mesentery, greater omentum and retroperitoneum. The present report describes a rare case of large omental lymphangioma mimicking ovarian mass. A 40-year-old G2P2 female patient presented without symptoms for routine gynecological examination. Transvaginal ultrasound examination revealed a cystic mass with a maximum diameter of 10 cm localized at the right parametrium space, suggestive of la

Cavitating mesenteric lymph node syndrome: a rare complication of refractory celiac disease.

Celiac disease is an immune-mediated enteropathy characterized by mucosal inflammation and villous atrophy of the small bowel upon exposure to ingested gluten. Refractory celiac disease (RCD), defined as persisting villous atrophy with crypt hyperplasia despite strict gluten-free diet, is a rare form of celiac disease with poor prognosis due to a higher rate of severe complications such as life-threatening malnutrition or the development of intestinal T-cell lymphoma. The cavitating mesenteric lymph node syndrome (CMLNS) represents a rare complication of celiac disease with unknown pathogenesi

Morphological changes of larval Echinococcus multilocularis in mice treated with albendazole or mebendazole.

Using DBA/2J mice, tissue homogenates of larval Echinococcus multilocularis were injected into the mesenteric veins to generate the liver infection. Mice were treated with either albendazole or mebendazole for prolonged periods to examine the morphological changes of the metacestode. Albendazole induced disorganization of both laminated and germinal layers and suppressed the maturation of vesicles. Amorphous but loosely laminated PAS-positive material was observed inside the damaged vesicles, although new vesicles slightly developed inside or outside of the damaged ones. Active proliferation o
