Mercury causes degradation of spatial cognition in a model songbird species.

Mercury is a widespread pollutant of increasing global concern that exhibits a broad range of deleterious effects on organisms, including birds. Because the developing brain is well-known to be particularly vulnerable to the neurotoxic insults of mercury, many studies have focused on developmental effects such as on the embryonic brain and resulting behavioral impairment in adults. It is not well understood how the timing of exposure, for example exclusively in ovo versus throughout life, influences the impact of mercury. Using dietary exposure to environmentally relevant methylmercury concent

Engineering the Ultrasensitive Visual Whole-Cell Biosensors by Evolved MerR and 5' UTR for Detection of Ultratrace Mercury.

The existing mercury whole-cell biosensors (WCBs, parts per billion range) are not able to meet the real-world requirements due to their lack of sensitivity for the detection of ultratrace mercury in the environment. Ultratrace mercury is a potential threat to human health via the food chain. Here, we developed an ultrasensitive mercury WCB by directed evolution of the mercury-responsive transcriptional activator (MerR) sensing module to detect ultratrace mercury. Subsequently, the mutant WCB (m4-1) responding to mercury in the parts per trillion range after 1 h of induction was obtained. Its

Use of selective quenching of a photoluminescent probe based on a Eu(III) β-diketonate complex for determination of methylmercury in produced water after liquid-liquid extraction.

An Eu(III) β-diketonate complex was produced and employed as a photoluminescent probe to determine methylmercury (CH3Hg+). To establish its molecular structure, the Eu(III) complex was characterized by elemental (CHNS) and thermogravimetric analyses and infrared spectroscopy. After establishing robust conditions to use the Eu(III) complex as an analytical probe, it was employed for the analysis of produced water (PW) samples with the analytical response based on the luminescence suppression proportional to the concentration of CH3Hg+ (a linear model after normalization of the response within t

Selective organomercury determination by ICP-MS made easy.

A fast and cost-effective procedure based on Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the selective determination of methylmercury (MeHg) is proposed and validated for fish tissue analysis. Selectivity for MeHg is achieved by simply inserting a strong anion exchange resin to block inorganic mercury as negatively charged chloride species, leaving MeHg unretained. The procedure features a 15 min extraction time followed by a 100 s analysis time achieving a limit of detection of 1.6 μg kg-1 on solid samples. The effect of the solution composition and inorganic mercury concentra

Diel mercury concentration variations in a mercury-impacted stream.

Filtered and particulate mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MMHg), and associated water chemistry parameters, were evaluated bi-hourly for several 30 h periods during the summer and winter seasons at several distinct locations (downstream forested, midstream urban/suburban, upstream industrial) along a creek contaminated with high levels of inorganic Hg to determine if biogeochemical Hg and MMHg cycles respond to the daily photocycle. In summer particulate Hg and MMHg concentrations doubled overnight (excluding the upstream industrial site) concurrent with increases in turbidity and total suspend

Influence of dissolved organic matter on methylmercury transformation during aerobic composting of municipal sewage sludge under different C/N ratios.

Current knowledge about the transformation of total mercury and methylmercury (MeHg) in aerobic composting process is limited. In this study, the composition and transformation of mercury and dissovled organic matter (DOM) in aerobic composting process of municipal sewage sludge were were comprehensively characterized, and the differences among the three C/N ratio (20, 26 and 30) were investigated. The main form of mercury in C/N 20 and 26 was organo-chelated Hg (F3, 46%-60%); while the main form of mercury in C/N 30 was mercuric sulfide (F5, 64%-70%). The main component of DOM in C/N 20 and 2

Inorganic versus organic fertilizers: How do they lead to methylmercury accumulation in rice grains.

Both inorganic and organic fertilizers are widely used to increase rice yield. However, these fertilizers are also found to aggravate mercury methylation and methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in paddy fields. The aim of this study was to reveal the mechanisms of inorganic and organic fertilizers on MeHg accumulation in rice grains, which are not yet well understood. Potting cultures were conducted in which different fertilizers were applied to a paddy soil. The results showed that both inorganic and organic fertilizers increased MeHg concentrations rather than biological accumulation factors (

Timing and magnitude of net methylmercury effects on waterbird reproductive output are dependent on food availability.

Mercury (Hg) is a globally distributed pollutant. Its sub-lethal effects on reproduction of birds have been used as indicators of contamination and of potential demographic effects. However, studies typically used single endpoints that might not be representative of entire reproductive cycle. To estimate timing and net cumulative effects of Hg exposure under field conditions, we used observational data over 11 years from >1200 nests of great egrets breeding under temporally and spatially varying food availability and Hg exposures in the Florida Everglades. We collected measures of fish biomass

Understanding the effects of sulfur input on mercury methylation in rice paddy soils.

Sulfur could be introduced into paddy soils via dry or wet deposition, irrigation, and fertilization, which subsequently impacts the production of methylmercury (MeHg), a bioaccumulative neurotoxicant. However, effects of sulfur input on MeHg production are variable, possibly due to the multiple effects of sulfur on Hg mobility and/or microbial Hg methylators, leading to uncertainties in predicting MeHg risk. To address that, we explored the effects of different types and amounts of sulfur as well as concentrations of ambient sulfate on Hg methylation in paddy soils, and elucidated the mechani

Extremely Elevated Total Mercury and Methylmercury in Forage Plants in a Large-Scale Abandoned Hg Mining Site: A Potential Risk of Exposure to Grazing Animals.

Ninety-five wild forage plants (belonging to 22 species of 18 families) and their corresponding rhizosphere soil samples were collected from wastelands of a large-scale abandoned Hg mining region for total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) analysis. The forage plant communities on the wastelands were dominated by the Asteraceae, Crassulaceae, and Polygonaceae families. The THg and MeHg concentrations in the forage plants varied widely and were in the range of 0.10 to 13 mg/kg and 0.19 to 23 μg/kg, respectively. Shoots of Aster ageratoides showed the highest average THg concentration of 12 ± 1.

The underappreciated role of natural organic matter bond Hg(II) and nanoparticulate HgS as substrates for methylation in paddy soils across a Hg concentration gradient.

Rice consumption is the major pathway for human methylmercury (MeHg) exposure in inland China, especially in mercury (Hg) contaminated regions. MeHg production, a microbially driven process, depends on both the chemical speciation of inorganic divalent mercury, Hg(II), that determines Hg bioavailability for methylation. Studies have shown that Hg(II) speciation in contaminated paddy soils is mostly controlled by natural organic matter and sulfide levels, which are typically thought to limit Hg mobility and bioavailability. Yet, high levels of MeHg are found in rice, calling for reconsideration

Distribution, alkylation, and migration of mercury in soil discharged from the Itomuka mercury mine.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the behavior of previously discharged mercury (Hg) released from the Itomuka Hg mine into the surrounding environment, especially into soil. Total-Hg (T-Hg), methylmercury (MeHg), and ethylmercury (EtHg) concentrations in the surface soil at eight sample sites around the mine were 3.8-64.2 mg/kg, 6.0-54.7 μg/kg, and undetected to 4.5 μg/kg, respectively. Core samples collected from seven of the eight sample sites showed that the vertical distribution of T-Hg was the highest in the surface soil layer and decreased rapidly in the lower layers. A stron

Artificial lake expansion amplifies mercury pollution from gold mining.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is the largest global source of anthropogenic mercury emissions. However, little is known about how effectively mercury released from ASGM is converted into the bioavailable form of methylmercury in ASGM-altered landscapes. Through examination of ASGM-impacted river basins in Peru, we show that lake area in heavily mined watersheds has increased by 670% between 1985 and 2018 and that lakes in this area convert mercury into methylmercury at net rates five to seven times greater than rivers. These results suggest that synergistic increases in lake are

Biochar amendment mitigates the health risks of dietary methylmercury exposure from rice consumption in mercury-contaminated areas.

The accumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) in rice is an important MeHg exposure pathway in humans in several mercury (Hg)-contaminated areas. In this study, the effects of low-dose biochar (BC) amendment (0.3%, w/w) on MeHg mobility/phytoavailability in different Hg-contaminated paddy soils, MeHg accumulation in rice plants and the health risks associated with MeHg-laden rice consumption were investigated. Soils amended with different doses of bamboo-derived BC (0.3, 0.5, and 1%, w/w) were incubated under anoxic conditions in microcosm experiments. In addition, pot experiments were conducted in

Mercury methylation by Geobacter metallireducens GS-15 in the presence of Skeletonema costatum.

In this study, bacterial mercury (Hg) methylation was investigated under the influence of red-tide algae of Skeletonema costatum (S. costatum). The distribution and speciation of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were profiled by employing Geobacter metallireducens (G. metallireducens GS-15) as the methylating bacteria. G. metallireducens GS-15 showed different capabilities in methylating different inorganic forms of Hg(II) (HgCl2) and Hg(II)-Algae (HgCl2 captured by S. costatum) to MeHg. In the absence of S. costatum, a maximum methylation efficiency of 4.31 ± 0.47% was achieved wi

Kinetics of Enzymatic Mercury Methylation at Nanomolar Concentrations Catalyzed by HgcAB.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a potent bioaccumulative neurotoxin that is produced by certain anaerobic bacteria and archaea. Mercury (Hg) methylation has been linked to the gene pair hgcAB, which encodes a membrane-associated corrinoid protein and a ferredoxin. Although microbial Hg methylation has been characterized in vivo, the cellular biochemistry and the specific roles of the gene products HgcA and HgcB in Hg methylation are not well understood. Here, we report the kinetics of Hg methylation in cell lysates of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ND132 at nanomolar Hg concentrations. The enzymatic Hg m

A novel biological sulfur reduction process for mercury-contaminated wastewater treatment.

The sulfidogenic process driven by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is not suitable for mercury-contaminated wastewater treatment due to the highly toxic methyl-mercury (MeHg) produced by SRB. In our previous study, we observed in short-term batch tests that sulfur-reducing bacteria (S0RB) could remove mercury ions without MeHg production. Thus, the aim of this study is to develop a biological sulfur reduction process driven by S0RB for mercury-contaminated wastewater, and investigate its long-term performance on mercury removal and MeHg accumulation. Receiving mercury-contaminated wastewater c

Aerobic and Anaerobic Bacterial Mercury Uptake is Driven by Algal Organic Matter Composition and Molecular Weight.

The biological mobilization of mercury (Hg) into microbes capable of Hg methylation is one of the limiting steps in the formation of the neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg). Although algal dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been associated with increased MeHg production, the relationship between bacterial Hg uptake and algal DOM remains unexplored. In this study, we aimed to address how the quantity and quality of DOM, freshly harvested from several algae, affected the bacterial uptake of Hg with the use of a biosensor capable of functioning both aerobically and anaerobically. We combined biosenso
