Treatment for femoral head osteonecrosis has been less successful in late stages of the disease, after progression to collapse. The current authors treated 21 patients (22 hips) with Stage III osteonecrosis by a technique of open reduction and fixation with methylmethacrylate cement (cementation). BACKGROUND: In the last years heparin surface-modified intraocular lenses (HSM IOLs) were used for special indications like uveitis, synechia, congenital cataract or pseudoexfoliation syndrome. A monolayer of heparin molecules on the surface of PMMA-IOLs causes a reduced postoperative inflammatory reaction and produces a higher long-term biocompatibility than PMMA-IOLs without surface-modification. The study was designed to evaluate the possible damage of this heparin-monolayer on the PMMA-IOL by different metallic implantation forceps and different grasp-pressure.

A prospective, randomized study using an acrylic palatal stabilizing device (PSD) was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this device in preventing disruptions in palatal architecture. A total of 26 premature infants with birth weights of 540 to 1740 g, and intubated orally for a period varying from 7 to 109 days were randomized to control and experimental groups. This study evaluated the efficacy of bonding of methyl methacrylate -based luting systems to poly(ether ether ketone). Three methyl methacrylate-based systems (Super-Bond [SB], Multibond [MB], and Beautilink [BL]) and an auto-polymerizing poly(methyl methacrylate) resin (Unifast II [UN]) were tested. Tensile bond strength (TBS) was measured before and after thermocycling.
