Ventral medial prefrontal functional connectivity and emotion regulation in chronic schizophrenia: a pilot study.

People with schizophrenia exhibit impaired social cognitive functions, particularly emotion regulation. Abnormal activations of the ventral medial prefrontal cortex (vMPFC) during emotional tasks have been demonstrated in schizophrenia, suggesting its important role in emotion processing in patients. We used the resting-state functional connectivity approach, setting a functionally relevant region, the vMPFC, as a seed region to examine the intrinsic functional interactions and communication between the vMPFC and other brain regions in schizophrenic patients. We found hypo-connectivity between

[Asymptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage under strict blood pressure control due to postoperative cerebral hyperperfusion in a patient with moyamoya disease].

We report a case of moyamoya disease manifesting as asymptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage due to postoperative cerebral hyperperfusion, despite the prophylactic intensive blood pressure control. This 35-year-old man initially suffered from right upper quadrantanopsia and was found to have cerebral infarction in the left occipital lobe due to moyamoya disease. He also manifested preoperatively a small intracerebral hemorrhage at the left caudate nucleus. The left cerebral hemisphere showed apparent hemodynamic compromise, thus he underwent left superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery

[A case of psittacosis with wandering infiltrates developing to acute respiratory distress syndrome].

A 52-year-old woman visited a local hospital with a high fever, non-productive cough and general fatigue. Her chest X-ray showed infiltrate in the right middle lung field. Computed tomography scans revealed ground-glass opacity and surrounding ring-shaped air-space consolidation, the "reversed halo sign". Cefpirom was administered, but her symptoms persisted and the infiltrate migrated to the left upper lobe. As cryptogenic organizing pneumonia was suspected, she was then treated with intravenously pulsed methylprednisolone followed by prednisolone. Despite these therapies, acute respiratory f

Aberrant neural activation during inhibitory control in girls with fragile X syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a genetic condition associated with risk for deficits in executive function, especially response inhibition. Under a clinical setting, this study employs a mobile neuroimaging technique, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), to examine differences in inhibition-elicited neural activation between girls with FXS and a control group matched for age, cognitive function, and clinical symptoms. fNIRS data were collected from 42 girls with FXS and 31 controls during a go/nogo task, with valid data available from 35 and 30 respectively. Relative to the control grou

[A reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome in a patient with classical polyarteritis nodosa].

We report a case of a reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS). A 57-year-old male had classical polyarteritis nodosa with mononeuritis multiplex, renal insufficiency, and a high titer of p-ANCA (MPO). He was normotensive. He was treated with high dose methylprednisolone and then with oral prednisolone and cyclophosphamide. Despite the treatment, his renal function rapidly deteriorated and hypertension progressed. He had two generalized seizures; at that time his blood pressure was 200/140 mmHg. CT scan revealed bilaterally symmetric hypodensities in the thalamus, the occipital

Heat-shock protein 70 levels in brain of patients with Down syndrome and Alzheimer's disease.

Heat-shock proteins are proteins serving as molecular chaperones, involved in the protection of cells from various forms of stress. Since the expression of these proteins is closely related to that of amyloid precursor protein (APP), heat-shock protein has been studied in brain of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and furthermore, brain Hsp70 mRNA levels were related to the agonal state. The aim of our study was to demonstrate the presence of Hsp70--immunoreactive protein in brain of controls, patients with AD and Down Syndrome (DS) in individual brain regions. The rationale for the study

Altered hippocampal functional connectivity in primary Sjögren syndrome: a resting-state fMRI study.

Structural and metabolic abnormalities in the hippocampus have been associated with the pathophysiological mechanism of central nervous system involvement in primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS). Nevertheless, how hippocampal function is altered in pSS remains unknown. The purpose of our study is to investigate the alterations in hippocampal functional connectivity (FC) in pSS by using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Thirty-eight patients with pSS and 38 age- and education level-matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent magnetic resonance imaging examination. Prior to e

Common and Specific Functional Activity Features in Schizophrenia, Major Depressive Disorder, and Bipolar Disorder.

Objectives: Schizophrenia (SZ), major depressive disorder (MDD), and bipolar disorder (BD) are serious mental disorders with distinct diagnostic criteria. They share common clinical and biological features. However, there are still only few studies on the common and specific brain imaging changes associated with the three mental disorders. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the common and specific functional activity and connectivity changes in SZ, MDD, and BD. Methods: A total of 271 individuals underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging: SZ (n = 64), MDD (n = 73), BD (n =

Anatomic basis of vascular exclusion of the liver.

Segmental occlusive phlebography of the IVC, coupled with a slit in its posterior wall, injection of corrosive substances into the portal and hepatocaval network, biometry of the retrohepatic IVC and serial sections of injected livers from 64 subjects allowed a study of the anatomica aspects of VEL: the Pringle maneuver and clamping of the IVC above and below the hepatocaval connexion. Surgery for hepatic tumors close to the connexion can benefit from VEL but the right suprarenal and inferior phrenic veins must be clamped. Clamping of the suprahepatic IVC is dependent on the site at which the

EEG reactivity correlates with neuropsychological test scores in Down's syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Down's syndrome patients express a neurodegenerative disorder and mental retardation. We studied the reactivity of EEG and its correlation with neuropsychological test score in Down's syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 32 patients with Down's syndrome and 31 controls for blocking of occipital EEG activity. The temporo-occipital EEG with eyes open (EO) was compared with resting EEG with eyes closed (EC), (EC/EO ratio). RESULTS: Both Down patients and controls showed significant diminution of alpha, beta and theta activity and decrease of EEG frequency with EO. However, t

Pure Gerstmann's syndrome from a focal lesion.

It is controversial whether a focal lesion can specifically induce Gerstmann's syndrome (dyscalculia, left-right disorientation, finger agnosia, and agraphia). Also, Gerstmann's tetrad has been attributed to other cerebral symptoms, particularly aphasia. We examined a patient who had all four symptoms of Gerstmann's syndrome, without other symptoms or signs, and who had a discrete left parietal lesion.
