A large population of stray cats is encountered in many urban areas sharing the same environment with people, usually being in a close direct contact with them. A variety of ectoparasites can infest such cats, causing mild dermatological abnormalities to more severe systemic disorders. In order to determine the extent of which stray cats carry ectoparasites, particularly those of zoonotic potential, 341 stray cats originating from the urban area of Thessaloniki, Greece, were examined between 2012 and 2014. The signalment of each cat such as gender, hair length, and roughly estimated age were r

We studied the factors which regulate the reproduction of ectoparasites of temperate-zone cave-dwelling bats, using the Schreiber's bat (Miniopterus schreibersii) and its ectoparasites as a model. For this, we searched 969 bats during 2003 and 2004 at important stages of the bat yearly cycle and found four ectoparasite species regularly occurring on them: two nycteribiids (Nycteribia schmidlii and Penicillidia conspicua), one wing mite (Spinturnix psi), and one hard tick (Ixodes simplex simplex). These parasites were present throughout the yearly cycle, but their reproductive activity greatly

The infestation of a 3-month-old child with Sarcoptes scabiei by way of infested nipples during the breast-feeding period led initially to facial papules and later to generalized dermatitis. Scabies mites were not detected on the face; studies on ten infested babies in India supported this findings. Thus, direct antiscabies treatment to the face is not necessary in babies.

Pyemotes mites, of which the grain itch mite is the most important for human medicine, are ectoparasites of many insect species. Human infestation occurs only accidentally and temporally. The source materials are most often grain, straw and plant-based foods. Bites produce an intensely itching urticarial wheal capped by pin-point vesicles, which often are destroyed by scratching. Pyemotes dermatitis favours the back, the abdomen and the flexor side of the forearms. The mites are barely visible to the naked eye and reside only briefly on humans and thus are not found by physicians during clinic

(1) Background: As a species of gamasid mite, the tropical rat mite (Ornithonyssus bacoti) is a common ectoparasite on rodents and some other small mammals. Besides stinging humans to cause dermatitis, O. bacoti can be a vector of rickettsia pox and a potential vector of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). (2) Objective: The present study was conducted to understand the host selection of O. bacoti on different animal hosts and the distribution in different environmental gradients in Yunnan Province of Southwest China. (3) Methods: The original data came from the investigations in 39

We report a case of a 44-year-old woman with an 8-year history of gnatophyma. Rosacea is a facial dermatosis that may present as flushing, erythema, telangiectases, papules, pustules and phyma. Phyma is considered the final evolution stage of rosacea and is a rare variant. Treatment of phyma with atypical localization may be a challenge for dermatologists in clinical practice.

Thirteen species of ectoparasitic (12) or phoretic (1) arthropods were collected from 26 adult Virginia opossums, Didelphis virginiana, live-trapped from April through September 1987 in Davidson County, Tennessee. The cat flea Ctenocephalides felis and the American dog tick Dermacentor variabilis were the predominant species with respect to mean intensity and prevalence. The macronyssid mite Ornithonyssus wernecki and the atopomelid mite Didelphilichus serrifer, both specific parasites of this host, showed high intensities but low prevalences. Other fleas collected were Cediopsylla simplex, Ct

Ectoparasitic infestations are common cutaneous problems. The vast majority of these are attributable to scabies and pediculosis. While these are usually readily recognizable, infestations caused by other ectoparasites, such as nonscabetic mites, may pose difficulty in diagnosis. In this article, we present a variety of ectoparasitic infestations that initially eluded diagnosis and review the gamut of ectoparasites that can cause eruptions in the skin.

Ectoparasitic mites have been studied for many years in the medical and veterinary fields, particularly for their association with humans and domesticated animals. At environments with little anthropic actions is possible to learn more about their interaction with natural or primary hosts. In this study, ectoparasitic mites of rodents and mammals of the Legado das Águas reserve were studied. The reserve is located inside the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest with high levels of conservation due to being mainly used for ecotourism. The objective of this study was to explore ectoparasitic mites in t

Parasitic otitis in cattle, caused by mites, has been reported from several continents. The present study aimed to determine the distribution, prevalence, intensity, mean intensity, and range of the agent in cattle in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The samples were designed at random, with an acceptable margin of error of 3% and a confidence interval of 99%. A total of 449 animals were sampled immediately after slaughter from 34 different municipalities in the state using the technique of flushing both ear canals. Only Raillietia auris (Leidy, 1872) were found, with a prevalence of 9

Demodecosis canina is one of the most important dog parasitoses, but its aetiology is still not well known. There are currently two known species of demodecid mite specific to the domestic dog Canis lupus familiaris Linnaeus, 1758 (Carnivora: Canidae). These are Demodex canis Leydig, 1859 (Acariformes: Demodecidae) and Demodex injai Desch & Hillier, 2003. There have also been many reports of the so-called 'short form', considered to be a separate species functioning under the name Demodex cornei nomen nudum, for which, however, no formal valid description has been documented. Taxonomic analysi

We documented ectoparasites found on wild black-and-white ruffed lemurs ( Varecia variegata) in the southeastern rain forests of Madagascar and describe trends in parasitism. In this study, 235 mesostigmatid mites (1 male, 87 females, 147 nymphs) identified as Liponyssella sp., in the acarine family Macronyssidae, were collected during 87% (34/39) of lemur examinations (mean number/host=7.9). The only other ectoparasite collected was the louse fly ( Allobosca crassipes; 3 males, 8 females) in the dipteran family Hippoboscidae, which was collected during 26% (10/39) of lemur examinations (mean

Despite being a bird with a broad and extensive distribution in Chile, the black-chinned siskin, Spinus barbatus Molina, 1782 is not well studied in relation to its parasites. This paper aims to describe the ectoparasite fauna of S. barbatus in central and southern Chile. A total of 125 individuals caught with mist nets were examined alive; a total of 22 parasites were found dead and were exposed to parasit autopsy. The extracted parasites were preserved in 70% alcohol for subsequent mounting and identification. Ectoparasites were found in 56 black-chinned siskins (38%); 48 of them (33%) had 8

Demodex blepharitis is an infectious ocular disease which is common, but always to be neglected. There were a few related reports about this disease in China. The pathogenic mechanism of demodex blepharitis is not clear at present. Literatures held different ideas about its diagnosis, therapeutic methods and curative effect. This review will summarize the new development of demodex blepharitis in order to provide references for its basic and clinical researches.(Chin J Ophthalmol, 2016, 52: 315-320).

From May 1990 to February 1996, 55 black bears (Ursus americanus floridanus) (38 males, 17 females) from 21 counties in Florida (USA), were examined for Demodex ursi (Acari: Demodecidae). The sample included cubs < 1-yr-old (n = 12), juveniles (1 to < 3 yr, n = 20), and adults (3 to 12 yr, n = 23). Demodex ursi was collected from four bears by deep scrapings of 15 sites on the head and forelimb of each bear. All four bears with demodicosis had crusty, scaly skin lesions, and moderate alopecia. No D. ursi were seen in any of the 750 scrapings from the other 51 bears, nor did any of those bears

Thalassornectes (Alcidectes) aukletae, originally described from two species of auklets (Charadriiformes: Alcidae) from maritime eastern Russia, is reported from a third species of pelagic charadriiform (Stercorariidae), the pomarine jaeger, Stercorarius pomarinus (Temminck), from Florida. The specimens from the jaeger are slightly smaller, the genital apodeme is more heavily sclerotized, paired setae gm are twice as long and there are other minor variations in the idiosomal and leg chaetotaxy. These differences are not considered sufficient to warrant taxonomic separation at the species or su

Psorergates (Psorobia) sp were recovered from dermal cysts on the face, chest, and abdomen of three stumptail macaques (Macaca arctoides) in a breeding colony of research animals. The lesions were multiple and appeared as white, crusted structures measuring 2 to 10 mm in diameter. These lesions were not associated with pruritus or other clinical symptoms. The mites were embedded in the epidermis and associated with mild hyperkeratosis. A few mononuclear leukocytes were present in the dermal and subcutaneous tissues.
