Rashba spin splitting and phonon-limited carrier mobility in novel two-dimensional Janus ZCrBSe2 (Z = N, P, As) materials.

In this study, we employ density functional theory to systematically investigate the properties of novel Janus ZCrBSe2 (Z = N, P, As) monolayers. These two-dimensional semiconductors are found to be dynamically and thermally stable and to possess narrow band gaps. Owing to their intrinsic structural asymmetry and the resulting breaking of out-of-plane inversion symmetry, spin-orbit coupling not only induces Zeeman-type spin splitting but also gives rise to pronounced Rashba-type spin splitting in all proposed Janus structures. Furthermore, we comprehensively analyze the role of different phono

Unmet Social Needs of Older Adults With Mobility Limitations Following Inpatient Rehabilitation Discharge in Nigeria: A Qualitative Narrative Inquiry Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Approximately, 30% to 60% of older adults experience functional decline following hospitalization, which has implications for their ability to meet social needs after discharge. Exploring the unmet social needs of older adults following discharge is warranted to rethink the elements of hospital discharge in low-resource countries. This study explored the unmet social needs of older adults with mobility limitations following discharge from an inpatient rehabilitation unit in a state hospital in Northern Nigeria. METHODS: This narrative qualitative study is based on the …

Frailty is associated with a history of falls among mobility-limited older adults-cross-sectional multivariate analysis from the BIOFRAIL study.

AIM: To identify differences in characteristics between mobility-limited older adults with a history of falls and those at risk of falling but who have not yet fallen. FINDINGS: Frailty and muscle strength were characteristics distinguishing between older adults with a history of falls and those absent of falls despite an increased risk of falling. MESSAGE: Frailty should be incorporated alongside handgrip strength (HGS) and sit-to-stand (STS) tests into routine evaluations of mobility-limited older adults referred for fall assessment. PURPOSE: We aimed to identify differences in characteri

Do Older Adults Adjust Their Control Beliefs According to Changes in Mobility Limitations? Evidence From a Large-Scale Observational Study.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines cross-over, time-lagged (cross-lagged) effects of nonintervened changes between mobility limitations and control constraints/self-mastery. METHODS: Using the Health and Retirement Study data from the years 2006 to 2016 from 10,690 participants, changes in mobility limitations, control constraints, and self-mastery were analyzed simultaneously with 3 latent change score models, to account for measurement error and pre-existing mobility issues prior to baseline. RESULTS: An increase in mobility limitations predicts a decrease in mastery observed in the next inte…

Strength training and protein supplementation improve muscle mass, strength, and function in mobility-limited older adults: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adaptation to strength training in very old mobility-limited individuals is not fully characterized. Therefore, the aim of this study was to perform a thorough investigation of the adaptation to a lower body strength training regime in this population, with particular emphasis on the relationship between changes in selected variables. METHODS: Twenty-two mobility-limited older men and women (85 ± 6 years) were randomized to either a group performing 30 min of heavy-load strength training three times a week, with daily protein supplementation, for 10 weeks (ST), or a control group.

Prediction of Mobility Limitations after Hospitalization in Older Medical Patients by Simple Measures of Physical Performance Obtained at Admission to the Emergency Department.

OBJECTIVE: Mobility limitations relate to dependency in older adults. Identification of older patients with mobility limitations after hospital discharge may help stratify treatment and could potentially counteract dependency seen in older adults after hospitalization. We investigated the ability of four physical performance measures administered at hospital admission to identify older medical patients who manifest mobility limitations 30 days after discharge. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study of patients (≥65 years) admitted to the emergency department for acute medical illness. During the fi…

Participant experiences and perceptions of physical activity-enhancing interventions for people with physical impairments and mobility limitations: a meta-synthesis of qualitative research evidence.

Disabled people face multiple personal, environmental and social barriers that interfere with leading a physically active lifestyle. Thus, there is an urgent need for behaviour change interventions to increase physical activity (PA) by specifically addressing the situations of disabled people, and barriers to participation. This original meta-synthesis of qualitative research was undertaken to explore participants' experiences and perceptions of PA-enhancing interventions for adults with physical impairments resulting in mobility limitations. Published articles were identified through a rigoro…
