Quantifying the evolution of flow boiling bubbles by statistical testing and image analysis: toward a general model.

A new index, the estimate of the error variance, which can be used to quantify the evolution of the flow patterns when multiphase components or tracers are difficultly distinguishable, was proposed. The homogeneity degree of the luminance space distribution behind the viewing windows in the direct contact boiling heat transfer process was explored. With image analysis and a linear statistical model, the F-test of the statistical analysis was used to test whether the light was uniform, and a non-linear method was used to determine the direction and position of a fixed source light. The experime

Segmentation of uterine fibroid ultrasound images using a dynamic statistical shape model in HIFU therapy.

Segmenting the lesion areas from ultrasound (US) images is an important step in the intra-operative planning of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). However, accurate segmentation remains a challenge due to intensity inhomogeneity, blurry boundaries in HIFU US images and the deformation of uterine fibroids caused by patient's breathing or external force. This paper presents a novel dynamic statistical shape model (SSM)-based segmentation method to accurately and efficiently segment the target region in HIFU US images of uterine fibroids. For accurately learning the prior shape information

A mathematical model for HIV and hepatitis C co-infection and its assessment from a statistical perspective.

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are a clear threat for public health, with high prevalences especially in high risk groups such as injecting drug users. People with HIV infection who are also infected by HCV suffer from a more rapid progression to HCV-related liver disease and have an increased risk for cirrhosis and liver cancer. Quantifying the impact of HIV and HCV co-infection is therefore of great importance. We propose a new joint mathematical model accounting for co-infection with the two viruses in the context of injecting drug users (IDUs). Stati

A simple statistical model for prediction of acute coronary syndrome in chest pain patients in the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Several models for prediction of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) among chest pain patients in the emergency department (ED) have been presented, but many models predict only the likelihood of acute myocardial infarction, or include a large number of variables, which make them less than optimal for implementation at a busy ED. We report here a simple statistical model for ACS prediction that could be used in routine care at a busy ED. METHODS: Multivariable analysis and logistic regression were used on data from 634 ED visits for chest pain. Only data immediately available at patient

1988: use of a Bayesian statistical model for risk assessment in coronary artery surgery. Updated in 1995.

A computerized statistical model based on the theorem of Bayes was developed to predict mortality after coronary artery bypass grafting. From January, 1984, to April, 1987, at our hospital, 700 patients underwent isolated coronary artery bypass grafting. The presence or absence of 20 risk factors was determined for each patient. The first 300 patients formed the initial database of the Bayesian predictive model, and the remaining 400 patients were prospectively evaluated in four groups of 100 each. Each group was prospectively evaluated and then incorporated into the database to update the mod

[Statistic evaluation of prognostic risk factors in penetrating keratoplasty using Cox multiple regression model].

Preoperative risk factors that may influence the prognosis in penetrating keratoplasty were statistically analyzed on 698 consecutive eye that had been operated on at the University of Tokyo Hospital. A Cox multiple regression model (proportional hazards models) was constructed with simultaneous consideration of follow-up periods and prognostic factors. Six preoperative risk factors were identified: corneal endothelial damage, the presence of anterior synechiae, glaucoma, older donor age, the area of vascularization, and aphakia or pseudophakia. Simulations of the prognosis were attempted usin

Sufficient statistics for parameter inference in the stochastic Van der Pol oscillator model for thermoacoustic instabilities.

Thermoacoustic instabilities pose a critical challenge in the design and operation of many combustion systems. We report a low-dimensional statistics approach for inferring the parameters of the stochastic Van der Pol oscillator from trajectory observations. From the exponential family structure of the stationary amplitude distribution, we identify sufficient statistics that capture essential parametric information. To break the parameter degeneracy inherent to stationary distribution methods, we incorporate the amplitude autocorrelation time, which provides independent information about noise

Social Contagion in COVID-19 Discussions Within the Belgian Reddit Community: Statistical and Modeling Study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding how sentiment toward COVID-19 mitigation measures evolves on social networks can help to inform infectious disease models and policymakers. Even though numerous studies have described social media interactions during the pandemic, few have modeled the underlying dynamics of sentiment contagion and polarization. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate topic emergence and sentiment evolution in COVID-19 mitigation discussions on r/Belgium, focusing on (1) whether discussion topics exhibited social contagion, (2) whether expressed sentiment displayed homophily, and (

Predictive role of Bladder wall dosimetry in conventional prostate Radiotherapy: Integrating AI and statistical Modelling.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Genitourinary toxicity is a common complication of prostate radiotherapy. Conventional bladder dosimetry may not adequately reflect the anatomical determinants of toxicity. This study evaluates the predictive value of bladder wall (BW) dosimetry and examines the added utility of artificial intelligence (AI) models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 177 prostate cancer patients treated with conventional radiotherapy was analyzed. Clinical, dosimetric, and toxicity data were collected. Logistic regression and machine learning (support vector machines, grad

Wnt Signaling-Related Biomarkers in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Diagnostic Performance and Integrated Statistical Modeling.

Objectives: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and systemic inflammation. Emerging evidence suggests that the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway may play a role in metabolic dysregulation; however, its clinical relevance in GDM remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of Wnt signaling-related biomarkers, including Wnt-inhibitory factor 1 (WIF-1), secreted frizzled-related protein-4 (SFRP-4), and beta-catenin-1 (CTNNB1) in GDM. Methods: This case-control study included 60 patients with GDM and 60 healthy

Spirodiclofen exposure disturbs zebrafish swim bladder formation: Statistical analysis and molecular modeling insights.

Pesticides are major environmental pollutants, and the swim bladder is highly sensitive to chemical stressors. However, the effects of spirodiclofen on swim bladder and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood despite its widespread environmental detection. In this study, zebrafish embroys were exposed to spirodiclofen to evaluate its impacts on the swim bladder. At 120 hpf, complete failure of swim bladder inflation was observed in the 0.146 mg/L and 0.300 mg/L treatment groups. Swim bladder area decreased by 40.3% and 52.8% (p < 0.01), and locomotor activity was markedly impaired,

Long-term projections of cancer prevalence in Australia to 2050: a population-based statistical modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer prevalence is the number of people alive with a past cancer diagnosis in a specified number of previous years (e.g., last 5 or 30 years). This study estimates 1- to 30-year cancer prevalence in Australia for each year in 2025-2050, for 24 cancer types, the group of remaining cancers, and for all cancers combined. METHODS: We used validated methods to estimate prevalence as a function of incidence and survival, using tabulated data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and incorporating the effect of influential cancer-specific factors. The number of people liv

Statistical modeling and process optimization for valorization of waste printed circuit boards using supercritical methanol.

The heterogeneous and complex composition of waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) poses significant challenges in their recycling. The inadequate management of these WPCBs has led to serious environmental hazards and the loss of valuable economic resources. In this context, the present study aimed to investigate the application of supercritical methanol as a treatment method for the processing and valorization of WPCBs. The effect of key process variables on the organic degradation efficiency (ODE) was studied and optimized utilizing a Box-Behnken design. The ODE reached approximately 96 % und

A Statistical Learning-Based Clustering Model With Features Selection to Identify Dyslexia in School-Aged Children.

The multi-deficit framework employed to identify dyslexia requires statistical learning-based models to account for the complex interplay of cognitive skills. Traditional methods often rely on simplistic statistical techniques, which may fail to capture the heterogeneity inherent in dyslexia. This study introduces a model-based clustering framework, employing finite mixtures of contaminated Gaussian distributions, to better understand and classify dyslexia. Using data from a cohort of 122 children in Poland, including 51 diagnosed with dyslexia, we explore the effectiveness of this method in d

Statistical shape modelling of the first carpometacarpal joint: A cross-sectional analysis of an osteoarthritis initiative cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Statistical shape modelling (SSM) has been used extensively to investigate the relationship between joint shape and hip, knee and spine osteoarthritis (OA), but first carpometacarpal joint (CMCJ) shape and thumb base OA is less understood. We established a statistical shape model of the first CMCJ to investigate the ability of SSM to evaluate CMCJ morphology and determine its ability to investigate association with thumb base OA. METHODS: 100 participants' bilateral hand and wrist radiographs were selected at random from the OAI database. A model was developed using SSM software

Statistical Modeling to Adjust for Time Trends in Adaptive Platform Trials Utilizing Non-Concurrent Controls.

Utilizing non-concurrent control (NCC) data in the analysis of late-entering arms in platform trials has recently received considerable attention. While incorporating NCC can lead to increased power and lower sample sizes, it might introduce bias to the effect estimators if temporal drifts are present. Aiming to mitigate this potential bias, we propose various frequentist model-based approaches that leverage the NCC, while adjusting for time. One of the currently available models incorporates time as a categorical fixed effect, separating the trial duration into periods, defined as time interv

Importance of OCT-derived biomarkers for the recurrence of central serous chorioretinopathy using statistics and predictive modelling.

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is a retinal disease characterised by the accumulation of subretinal fluid, which often resolves spontaneously in acute cases. However, approximately one-third of patients experience recurrences that may cause severe and irreversible vision. This study aimed to identify parameters derived from optical coherence tomography (OCT) that are associated with CSCR recurrence. Our dataset included 5211 OCT scans from 344 eyes of 255 patients diagnosed with CSCR. 178 eyes were identified as recurrent, 109 as non-recurrent, and 57 were excluded. We extracted param

A framework for three-dimensional statistical shape modeling of the proximal femur in Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.

PURPOSE: The pathomorphology of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) is a key contributor to poor long-term outcomes such as hip pain, femoroacetabular impingement, and early-onset osteoarthritis. Plain radiographs, commonly used for research and in the clinic, cannot accurately represent the full extent of LCPD deformity. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a methodological framework for three-dimensional (3D) statistical shape modeling (SSM) of the proximal femur in LCPD. METHODS: We developed a framework consisting of three core steps: segmentation, surface mesh preparation,

Quantifying climatic and socioeconomic drivers of urban malaria in Surat, India: a statistical spatiotemporal modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Cities are becoming increasingly important habitats for mosquito vectors of disease. The pronounced heterogeneity of urban landscapes challenges our understanding of the effects of climate and socioeconomic factors on mosquito-borne disease dynamics at different spatiotemporal scales. Here, we quantify the impact of climatic and socioeconomic factors on urban malaria risk, using an extensive dataset in both space and time for reported Plasmodium falciparum cases in the city of Surat, northwest India. METHODS: We analysed 10 years of monthly P falciparum cases resolved at three nes
