OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of unsuspected molar pregnancy in patients with first trimester spontaneous abortions.
METHODS: An observational, cross-section study was carried out in 396 consecutive patients with diagnosis of first trimester spontaneous abortions, without clinical or ultrasonographic findings suggesting hydatidiform mole, a histological diagnosis was made from the curettage specimens, the cases with diagnosis of any trophoblastic disease prior of curettage were not included in the study.

METHODS: Circulating CA 125, CA 19-9, CA 15-3 and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels were studied in sixty patients with hydatidiform mole and in twenty normal pregnant women of a corresponding duration of pregnancy.
DISCUSSION: Serum levels of CA 125, CA 15-3 and CEA are not affected by molar pregnancy. Supraeruption of the maxillary first molar in the absence of the mandibular first molar was observed in subjects with both normal and pathologic periodontics. Both the migration of the gingival margin and the increase in the crown height were evaluated in terms of the length of time the antagonist tooth had been missing. In view of limited investigations it was considered worthwhile to determine the impact of race, age, and gender on the development and calcification of third molars. Results showed that calcification of third molars could be estimated by observing one quadrant. The crown calcification process begins and is completed earlier in blacks. There were no significant gender differences.

A patient with combined pregnancy developed an acute condition in the abdomen 9 weeks after surgical removal of a tubal pregnancy. At laparotomy she was found to have bilateral theca-lutein cysts. After operation, the patient went into preterm labor and was delivered of a male fetus. Pathologic examination of the placenta revealed hydropic change and trophoblastic hyperplasia.

In a retrospective study of 455 patients with confirmed molar pregnancy, registered with the Hydatidiform Mole Register of the State of Victoria in the years 1973-1982 inclusive, treatment for persistent trophoblastic activity was necessary in 62 (13.6%) patients.
