The morphogenesis of the posterior neural tube and tail in Monodelphis domesticus.

The process of secondary neuralation has been studied in the Brazilian opossum, Monodelphis domesticus. Secondary neuralation in this mammal was found to have qualities of secondary neuralation that were present in both the chick and the mouse. In this study, four stages of secondary neuralation were found beginning with the medullary cord stage. Other stages in the differentiation of the secondary neural tube were: differentiation of the neuroepithelium, cavitation of the medullary cord, and proliferation of the neural tube. The process of secondary neuralation proceeded in a rostral-to-cauda

Determination of somite cells: independence of cell differentiation and morphogenesis.

Somites are mesodermal structures which appear transiently in vertebrates in the course of their development. Cells situated ventromedially in a somite differentiate into the sclerotome, which gives rise to cartilage, while the other part of the somite differentiates into dermomyotome which gives rise to muscle and dermis. The sclerotome is further divided into a rostral half, where neural crest cells settle and motor nerves grow, and a caudal half. To find out when these axes are determined and how they rule later development, especially the morphogenesis of cartilage derived from the somites…

Studies in sporotrichosis: fungal morphogenesis and pathogenicity in differing environments.

Sporothrix schenckii exhibits different morphology and pathogenic properties according to the source and circumstances of its growth. The present study considers the morphology and experimental pathogenicity in relation to - the 'wild' strains; the possible circumstances enhancing pathogenicity in strains recovered from the soil; the rate and nature of the transformational steps in morphology, in human and experimental infections by established pathogenic strains; the elimination of pathogenic strains to the surface of clinical lesions, enabling a simplified diagnostic proof of infection; the

Normal epithelial branching morphogenesis in the absence of collagen I.

Interstitial collagens are thought to mediate epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during organogenesis. We have used the collagen I-deficient mouse mutant Mov13 to directly investigate the role of this major representative of the interstitial collagens in epithelial branching morphogenesis. Since homozygous embryos die at midgestation, we have studied the development of organ rudiments from Mov13 homozygous (i.e., collagen I-deficient), heterozygous, and wild-type embryos in culture. Development of all explants, including lung, kidney, salivary glands, pancreas, and skin, was normal by light a…

Morphogenesis of amyloid plaques in mice with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Amyloid plaques were experimentally produced in the brains of mice inoculated with human Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) brain homogenate. Light-microscopically, these plaques were mostly round and oval and were surrounded by macrophages and astrocytes. Ultramicroscopically, amyloid plaques were present in the cytoplasm of macrophages or were surrounded by these cells. The macrophages had numerous Golgi apparatuses, endoplasmic reticula (ER), ribosomes, polysomes, and lysosomes with inoculated materials or degenerating products. The bundles of amyloid fibrils were intermingled with the cytopla

An ultrastructural study of the morphogenesis of membranocystic lesions in bone marrow.

A biopsy case of a man aged 30 years, who was admitted to the hospital for the fracture of his right talus, was reported. The X-ray analysis … rm MCL, concurrently with collapse of the fat cells. Thus, at least one process responsible for the morphogenesis of MCL could be determined by our electron microscopic examination.

Morphology and morphogenesis of cerebral ring hemorrhages in anemic monkeys.

Cerebral ring hemorrhages were observed in four species of monkeys with various forms of anemia. The lesions resembled those described in humans with a variety of diseases, including pernicious anemia. The pale centers of most lesions were surrounded by rings of erythrocytes. Also observed were petechiae, pale foci without hemorrhage, and glial nodules. Ultrastructural study revealed that the pale cores were foci of degenerating neurites associated with infiltration of fibrin into the finest interstitial spaces. Leakage of firbinogen and erythrocytes apparently occurred from capillary sized ve

Morphogenesis of fibrosis and cirrhosis in methotrexate-treated patients with psoriasis.

Serial liver biopsies before and after Methotrexate therapy were performed in each of eight patients with severe, recalcitrant psoriasis treated for years with Methotrexate in a single, weekly, oral dose not exceeding 25 mg per dose. A total of 31 liver biopsies was studied. The study revealed liver damage commencing with small foci of piecemeal necrosis, followed by the destruction of the limiting plate and the occurrence of stellate periportal fibrosis. Eventually, partial and then whole fibrous septa developed between portal tracts and between portal tracts and central veins, with resultant

Piezo1-mediated mechanohydraulic control of cell volume drives cardiac morphogenesis.

Organ morphogenesis is driven by physical forces, yet how mechanical stimuli pattern tissue shape and guide developmental programs remains poorly understood. In zebrafish, endocardial cells (EdCs) within the heart valve-forming region undergo marked volume reduction during early morphogenesis. Here, we uncover a hydraulics-based mechanism by which mechanical forces control EdC volume to direct cardiac development. We show that the mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo1 acts with the calcium-binding protein calmodulin (CaM) and the aquaporin Aqp8a.1 water channel to orchestrate EdC shrinkage. We f…

46th Annual David W. Smith Workshop on Malformations and Morphogenesis.

The 46th Annual David W. Smith (DWS) Workshop on Malformations and Morphogenesis returned to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a site of singular historical resonance for dysmorphology. The program unfolded across six themes-orofacial morphogenesis, gastrulation and early embryogenesis, tooth morphogenesis/dentition, genitourinary malformations, chromatin remodeling, and cardiovascular disorders-anchored by keynotes and emphasis lectures from Drs. Paul Trainor, Cigall Kadoch, Ophir Klein, Neil Chi, Robert Lipinski, Margaret Adam, and the Founder's Talk by Dr. Marilyn Jones. This narrative r…

Converging Signaling Networks Drive Taste Bud Morphogenesis, Turnover, and Regeneration.

Buds are continuously renewed sensory organs in which development, adult maintenance, and repair share overlapping molecular circuitry. During embryogenesis, WNT/β-catenin signaling promotes taste placode formation and placodal Shh expression, while SHH refines papilla spacing and restricts neighboring papilla formation. SOX2 functions as a taste-competence and progenitor maintenance factor. In adults, LGR5/LGR6-RSPO-WNT signaling sustains progenitor activity, and gustatory neurons are an important source of RSPO2; available genetic evidence is consistent with a neuron-derived contribution to

Phylogeny and ecological roles shaping yeast-hyphae morphogenesis in Ophiostomataceae.

The Ophiostomataceae family encompasses numerous species that exhibit yeast-hyphae dimorphism, including well-known pathogens like the causal agents of Dutch elm disease, blue-staining fungi, and sporotrichosis. This dimorphism is not only observed in pathogenic interactions but also plays a crucial role in symbiotic relationships, such as ambrosia fungi. The ability to switch between these morphological forms may contribute to their adaptability and ecological functions within different environments and host interactions. This study seeks to elucidate the intricate interplay between dimorphis
