Modeling and analysis of melanoblast motion.

Melanoblast migration is important for embryogenesis and is a key feature of melanoma metastasis. Many studies have characterized melanoblast movement, focusing on statistical properties and have highlighted basic mechanisms of melanoblast motility. We took a slightly different and complementary approach: we previously developed a mathematical model of melanoblast motion that enables the testing of biological assumptions about the displacement of melanoblasts and we created tests to analyze the geometric features of cell trajectories and the specific issue of trajectory interactions. Within th…

The Neurophysiology and Treatment of Motion Sickness.

BACKGROUND: Seasickness and travel sickness are classic types of motion illness. Modern simulation systems and virtual reality representations can also induce comparable symptoms. Such manifestations can be alleviated or prevented by various measures. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent publications retrieved by a PubMed search, with special attention to clinical trials and review articles. RESULTS: Individuals vary in their susceptibility to autonomic symptoms, ranging from fatigue to massive vomiting, induced by passive movement at relatively low frequencies (0.2 to 0.4 Hz) in situa…

Predominance of sperm motion in corners.

Sperm migration through the female tract is crucial to fertilization, but the role of the complex and confined structure of the fallopian tube in sperm guidance remains unknown. Here, by confocal imaging microchannels head-on, we distinguish corner- vs. wall- vs. bulk-swimming bull sperm in confined geometries. Corner-swimming dominates with local areal concentrations as high as 200-fold that of the bulk. The relative degree of corner-swimming is strongest in small channels, decreases with increasing channel size, and plateaus for channels above 200 μm. Corner-swimming remains predominant acro

Pathophysiology and treatment of motion sickness.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Motion sickness remains bothersome in conventional transport and is an emerging hazard in visual information technologies. Treatment remains unsatisfactory but advances in brain imaging, neurophysiology, and neuropharmacology may provide insights into more effective drug and behavioural management. We review these major developments. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent progress has been in identifying brain mechanisms and loci associated with motion sickness and nausea per se. The techniques have included conventional neurophysiology, pathway mapping, and functional MRI, implicating mu…

A rationale for space motion sickness.

Space motion sickness (SMS) still remains a problematic nuisance for a majority of fliers during their first 1 to 3 days in space and is an enigma to all concerned after almost half a century of spaceflight and extensive ground and in-flight studies. There is no known etiology consistent with observed signs and symptoms, and attempts to produce pre- and in-flight countermeasures have largely failed. Some medications for motion sickness (MS) have been partially effective, but must be used with caution due to their side effects. A hypothesis regarding SMS that is consistent with current knowledg…

The development of jaw motion for mastication.

The developmental course of early chewing has rarely been studied, although such knowledge is essential for understanding childhood feeding and swallowing disorders. The goal of this investigation was to quantitatively describe age- and consistency-related changes in jaw kinematics during early chewing development. An optical-motion tracking system was used to record jaw movements during chewing in 3-dimensions in 11 typically-developing participants longitudinally from 9-30 months of age. Age related changes in jaw movement were described for both puree and regular consistencies. The findings…

Perspectives of electrogastrography and motion sickness.

Electrogastrography (EGG) is a noninvasive measurement of stomach activity using surface electrodes positioned over the abdominal surface. For over 10 years, EGG has been used as an objective measure of epigastric symptoms and nausea experienced in visually induced sickness provoked by circularvection. It was reported that during sickness, there is a shift in the dominant basal electrical activity. The 3 cycles per minute activity decrease and the 4-9 cycles per minute activity increase. This technique has also been used to evaluate the efficacy of antimotion sickness drugs and to monitor sick…

Determinants of the perception of sagittal motion.

This study examines the change in the perceived distance of an object in three-dimensional space when the object and/or the observer's head is moved along the line of sight (sagittal motion) as a function of the perceived absolute (egocentric) distance of the object and the perceived motion of the head. To analyze the processes involved, two situations, labeled A and B, were used in four experiments. In Situation A, the observer was stationary and the perceived motion of the object was measured as the object was moved toward and away from the observer. In Situation B, the same visual informati…

Habituation of motion sickness in the cat.

We subjected 30 female cats to a motion sickness stimulus in three series of tests. A series consisted of five tests given bi-weekly, weekly, or daily. Each test consisted of 30 min of stimulation followed by 1 min of rest, and series were separated by a period of not less than 14 d. Retching was the dependent variable. No habituation (reduction in the incidence of retching) was found with biweekly testing but pronounced habituation was observed with weekly and daily testing. The 30 cats were divided evenly into high and low susceptibility groups based on the results of the biweekly tests. The…

Generalization of tolerance to motion environments.

The aim of the present investigation was to determine to what extent training tolerance to one motion stimulus would generalize other motion experiences. Twenty subjects prone to motion sickness were selected and assigned to one of four groups after pretesting in a Dichgans and Brandt drum to determine their susceptibility to visually-induced apparent motion. They were also pretested with a VDT display of an expanding surface, and on a revolving/tilting chair. Subjects were assigned to one of the four groups by matching their mean tolerance to visually-induced motion. Subjects in the first gro…
