Virtual reality system for treatment of the fear of public speaking using image-based rendering and moving pictures.

The fear of speaking is often cited as the world's most common social phobia. The rapid growth of computer technology enabled us to use virtual reality (VR) for the treatment of the fear of public speaking. There have been two techniques used to construct a virtual environment for the treatment of the fear of public speaking: model-based and movie-based. Virtual audiences and virtual environments made by model-based technique are unrealistic and unnatural. The movie-based technique has a disadvantage in that each virtual audience cannot be controlled respectively, because all virtual audiences

Autonomic responses of transsexual and homosexual males to erotic film sequences.

Penile volume and galvanic skin responses to nude female and male film sequences were studied in 10 transsexual patients, 44 patients requesting treatment for homosexual impulses, and 60 heterosexual students. Student controls and homosexuals showed significantly greater galvanic skin responses to the preferred than to the nonpreferred sex. Transsexuals tended to show larger galvanic skin responses to females than did male homosexuals. No strong relationships were found between penile volume and galvanic skin response to the preferred sex. It is concluded that transsexual patients differ signi

Trait psychoticism is associated with greater intersubject neural dissimilarity during naturalistic social movie viewing.

Psychoticism refers to maladaptive traits associated with eccentricity, perceptual dysregulation, and unusual beliefs. This study explored how individual differences in psychoticism map into neural responses during naturalistic movie-watching. By utilizing social movies with differing demands of inference, we examined how relevant correspondence of individual differences emerges as a function of movie features. A total of 157 individuals were assessed with traits of psychoticism, and intersubject correlation of neural response was assessed with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Th

Consistent neural representation of valence in encoding and recall.

Recall is an act of elicitation of emotions similar to those emotions previously experienced. Unlike the past experiences where external sensory stimuli triggered emotions, recall does not require external sensory stimuli. This difference is pertinent to the key debate in affective representation, addressing whether the representation of valence is consistent across modalities (modality-general) or dependent on modalities (modality-specific). This study aimed to verify neural representations of valence between encoding and recall. Using neuroimaging data from movie watching and recall (Chen et

Examining the Feasibility and Acceptability of Identifying Signs of Social Anxiety, in University Students Aged 18-25, While Watching 360° Immersive Films.

Timely, accurate assessment and treatment for social anxiety disorder (SAD) in young people is crucial. There is potential for the adoption of tailored virtual reality interventions for a complementary diagnostic tool using heart rate monitoring as a response indicator. This study examined the feasibility and acceptability of this concept by exposing healthy individuals, aged 18-25, to developed 360° immersive films while collecting heart rate sensor data. Two immersive scenarios were designed with a participatory advisory youth group. A clinical consultant nurse mapped scenario events against

Characterizing consciousness states: EEG microstate dynamics in patients with disorders of consciousness during naturalistic movie-viewing.

Consciousness assessment in disorders of consciousness (DoC) patients remains clinically challenging. Dynamic brain activities responsive to sensory stimulations have been suggested to contain consciousness-related information. However, primary sensory processing can occur unconsciously, necessitating evaluation of residual higher-order cognitive functions for effective assessment. In this study, we introduced a movie-viewing paradigm incorporating a scrambled version to control for primary sensory processing and applied electroencephalography (EEG) microstate analysis to capture higher-order

Social cognition in women with borderline personality disorder based on an exhaustive analysis of the Movie for Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC) categories.

A significant number of borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms are manifested in the interpersonal context. This can be explained by the difficulties in attributing the mental states of oneself and others, which constitutes social cognition. Errors in social cognition are interrelated with the affective, cognitive, impulsive, and interpersonal areas of the person with BPD. The aims of this study was to analyze social cognition in women with BPD compared with a control group and to analyze social cognition in BPD based on BPD symptoms and its severity. To assess social cognition, we use

Sharing the filmic experience - The physiology of socio-emotional processes in the cinema.

As we identify with characters on screen, we simulate their emotions and thoughts. This is accompanied by physiological changes such as galvanic skin response (GSR), an indicator for emotional arousal, and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), referring to vagal activity. We investigated whether the presence of a cinema audience affects these psychophysiological processes. The study was conducted in a real cinema in Berlin. Participants came twice to watch previously rated emotional film scenes eliciting amusement, anger, tenderness or fear. Once they watched the scenes alone, once in a group. W

Injury and Illness Depicted in Running-Related Films.

The perception that children and adolescents have of injury and illness may be influenced by their depiction in sport-related films. The objective of this study was to determine the depiction of injury and illness in a select number of running-related films. A sample of 31 running-related films were analyzed, with a total of 77 injuries/illnesses depicted. The most common injuries/illnesses depicted were categorized as exertional heat exhaustion/stroke (26%), lower leg muscle cramps/not heat related (12%), ankle sprain (9%), knee ligamentous/meniscus injury (6%), exercise-associated collapse/n

Medea's Nuptial Gifts: Myth and Biomedical Reality.

In all art forms, Medea is mainly represented as the tragic witch from Colchis (contemporary Georgia), who slaughtered her sons and killed her erotic rival Glauke and her father, King Creon of Corinth, by offering an elaborate poisonous nuptial garment. Euripides described the victims' symptoms as a sudden extreme inflammation, leading anyone coming into contact with the garment to death. In other version, the inflammation is described as pure fire. The symptoms resemble what current medical knowledge describes as an immune contact sensitivity reaction. The passages with medical interest from

Effects of Aesthetic Chills on a Cardiac Signature of Emotionality.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that a cardiac signature of emotionality (referred to as EK, which can be computed from the standard 12 lead electrocardiogram, ECG), predicts inter-individual differences in the tendency to experience and express positive emotion. Here, we investigated whether EK values can be transiently modulated during stimulation with participant-selected music pieces and film scenes that elicit strongly positive emotion. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The phenomenon of aesthetic chills, as indicated by measurable piloerection on the forearm, was used to accuratel

"Pictures with a purpose": the birth control debate on the big screen.

In the first half of the twentieth century, birth control advocates used the mass media to reframe contraception from a private, secret matter to an acceptable part of life fit for public discussion. Although their campaign began in print, they quickly embraced the more far-reaching medium of film to deliver their message. This article argues that birth control advocates circumvented the Comstock Act in the early decades of the twentieth century by taking up this new medium as part of a long-running strategy to publicize the birth control movement. Their efforts shaped both the public debate o

Trauma films, information processing, and intrusive memory development.

Three experiments indexed the effect of various concurrent tasks, while watching a traumatic film, on intrusive memory development. Hypotheses were based on the dual-representation theory of posttraumatic stress disorder (C. R. Brewin, T. Dalgleish, & S. Joseph, 1996). Nonclinical participants viewed a trauma film under various encoding conditions and recorded any spontaneous intrusive memories of the film over the following week in a diary. Changes in state dissociation, heart rate, and mood were also measured. As predicted, performing a visuospatial pattern tapping task at encoding significa

Diagnosing The English Patient: schizoid fantasies of being skinless and of being buried alive.

The psychological world of The English Patient is explored to deepen the understanding of schizoid states. The protagonist, Almásy, is a remote desert explorer whose triangular sadomasochistic affair with the married Katharine destroys them all. His damaged skin is understood as a symbolic representation of his psychological condition. For the schizoid, love consumes and leads to obliteration of the self, represented by the loss of identifying features, and to traumatic permeability (i.e., the loss of boundaries between self and other, and between the ego and repressed desires). Other schizoid

Demonstration of aortic lesions via cine magnetic resonance imaging.

Cine-MRI was used to evaluate eight patients with known thoracic aorta disease. Included in this study were three aortic coarctations, two aortic dissections, an aneurysm, a posttraumatic pseudoaneurysm, and a patent ductus arteriosus. Cine-MRI was found to be valuable in the assessment of the pathologic anatomy and associated flow disturbances in these disorders. In seven cases, the images demonstrated the aortic lesion and aberrant blood flow. Our technique was unable to image the structural lesion in the patient with patent ductus arteriosus, but the abnormal blood flow was shown. Angiograp

Intraventricular flow during isovolumic relaxation: description and characterization by Doppler echocardiography.

This study describes the characteristics of a prominent Doppler flow velocity signal representing intraventricular flow during left ventricular isovolumic relaxation. The flow during the isovolumic relaxation period was demonstrated in 60 subjects, including 7 with a normal heart, 26 with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, 10 with aortic valve disease, 9 with a transplanted heart and 8 others. All had normal to hyperdynamic left ventricular systolic function with some degree of cavity obliteration as seen in the apical two-dimensional echocardiographic views. In contrast, this isovolumic relaxation
