Vestibular Morphological Asymmetry Associated With Motion Sickness Susceptibility.

Sensory conflicts leading to motion sickness can occur not only between but also within sensory modalities. The vestibular organs are located in both left and right inner ears, and their misalignment can be a source of self-motion related sensory conflicts. In the current study, using inner ear magnetic resonance imaging, we examined whether morphological asymmetry of the bilateral vestibular organs was associated with motion sickness susceptibility. The results showed a larger position asymmetry of bilateral vestibular organs in individuals with high rather than low susceptibility. In additio…

Motion sickness, nausea and thermoregulation: The "toxic" hypothesis.

Principal symptoms of motion sickness in humans include facial pallor, nausea and vomiting, and sweating. It is less known that motion sickness also affects thermoregulation, and the purpose of this review is to present and discuss existing data related to this subject. Hypothermia during seasickness was firstly noted nearly 150 years ago, but detailed studies of this phenomenon were conducted only during the last 2 decades. Motion sickness-induced hypothermia is philogenetically quite broadly expressed as besides humans, it has been reported in rats, musk shrews and mice. Evidence from human …

Scopolamine (hyoscine) for preventing and treating motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in The Cochrane Library in Issue 3, 2004 and previously updated in 2007 and 2009.Motion sickness, the discomfort experienced when perceived motion disturbs the organs of balance, may include symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, pallor, cold sweats, hypersalivation, hyperventilation and headaches. The control and prevention of these symptoms has included pharmacological, behavioural and complementary therapies. Although scopolamine (hyoscine) has been used in the treatment and prevention of motion sickness for decades, there have …

Rizatriptan reduces vestibular-induced motion sickness in migraineurs.

A previous pilot study suggested that rizatriptan reduces motion sickness induced by complex vestibular stimulation. In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study we measured motion sickness in response to a complex vestibular stimulus following pretreatment with either rizatriptan or a placebo. Subjects included 25 migraineurs with or without migraine-related dizziness (23 females) aged 21-45 years (31.0 ± 7.8 years). Motion sickness was induced by off-vertical axis rotation in darkness, which stimulates both the semicircular canals and otolith organs of the vestibular apparatus.…

[Vestibular testing abnormalities in individuals with motion sickness].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the vestibular function of motion sickness. METHOD: VNG, which tests the vestibular function of horizontal semicircular canal, and CPT, which tests vestibulospinal reflex and judge proprioceptive, visual and vestibular status, were performed in 30 motion sickness patients and 20 healthy volunteers (control group). Graybiel score was recorded at the same time. RESULT: Two groups' Graybiel score (12.67 +/- 11.78 vs 2.10 +/- 6.23; rank test P<0.05), caloric test labyrinth value [(19.02 +/- 8.59) degrees/s vs (13.58 +/- 5.25) degrees/s; t test P<0.05], caloric test labyrin…

Vertigo and motion sickness. Part II: Pharmacologic treatment.

Vertigo is a sensation of movement when no movement is actually occurring. It is often accompanied by visceral autonomic symptoms including pallor, diaphoresis, nausea, and vomiting. Vertigo is similar to motion sickness in that both may be caused by vestibular stimulation that does not match an internal model of expected environmental stimuli. Indeed, a functioning vestibular system is necessary for the perception of motion sickness. For this reason, many of the same drugs are used to treat both conditions. The investigation of drugs that treat motion sickness helps to discover medications th…

Motion sickness increases the risk of accidental hypothermia.

Motion sickness (MS) has been found to increase body-core cooling during immersion in 28 degrees C water, an effect ascribed to attenuation of the cold-induced peripheral vasoconstriction (Mekjavic et al. in J Physiol 535(2):619-623, 2001). The present study tested the hypothesis that a more profound cold stimulus would override the MS effect on peripheral vasoconstriction and hence on the core cooling rate. Eleven healthy subjects underwent two separate head-out immersions in 15 degrees C water. In the control trial (CN), subjects were immersed after baseline measurements. In the MS-trial, su…

Motion sickness susceptibility fluctuates through the menstrual cycle.

INTRODUCTION: Surveys of transportation by sea, land, and air indicate that women are more susceptible to motion sickness than men, showing higher incidences of vomiting and reporting more symptoms such as nausea. The cause of this greater motion sickness susceptibility in women is unknown. One suggestion is that it is due to the functioning of the female endocrine system, but there are contradictions between existing studies. HYPOTHESIS: Motion sickness in women varies across the menstrual cycle. METHODS: There were 12 healthy women, age 24.4 +/- 6.6 yr (mean +/- SD), not using contraceptiv…

Visual field effects on motion sickness in cars.

BACKGROUND: It is commonly assumed that car passengers who suffer from motion sickness will benefit from being able to see the road ahead. HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that variations in the external view (including restrictions to forward view and the provision of an artificial real-time video view) would affect the development of sickness during a 30-min suburban car journey. METHOD: Motion sickness was investigated in 4 experiments using 15 different conditions, with 20 subjects in each condition. The conditions involved artificial restrictions to view, restrictions arising from differ…

Reduction of motion sickness in prehospital trauma care.

Motion sickness adds to the discomfort of many patients being transported by ambulance. Recent research has demonstrated the effectiveness of oxygen therapy in reducing motion sickness during transport to hospital. However, patients reported negative reactions to wearing a facemask, which produced feelings of claustrophobia and anxiety. We therefore tested the hypothesis that supplemental oxygen inhaled from a new oxygen delivery device OxyArm, which avoids direct contact with the patient's skin, may reduce the incidence of motion sickness and increase patient satisfaction. Forty patients suff…

Effect of roll oscillation frequency on motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: In many environments associated with motion sickness there are low frequency motions in several axes, including roll. Roll motion has often been assumed to be a cause of motion sickness, either alone or in combination with motions in other axes. However, there have been no systematic studies of the effects of roll frequency on sickness. HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that sickness caused by roll oscillation would depend on the frequency of roll. METHOD: There were 100 male subjects (aged 18 to 26 yr) who participated in a laboratory study. Prior to experiencing motion, all subje…

Visually induced motion sickness predicted by postural instability.

We investigated whether postural instability can predict motion sickness and studied relations among instability, motion sickness, and vection. Nine men and 4 women (mean age = 19.85 years) were exposed, while standing, to an optical simulation of body sway. Head motion was recorded using a magnetic tracking system. Postural instabilities were observed prior to the onset of motion sickness. Vection was reported by most participants, including all who became ill. A discriminant analysis revealed that parameters of postural motion accurately predicted motion sickness. The results confirm that po…

Predictive efficacy of motion sickness history for airsickness.

BACKGROUND: Airsickness is a common problem in the early stage of flying training. It can be sufficiently severe to impair the student's flight performance and his ability to learn. Without adequate evaluation and rehabilitation, intractable airsickness symptoms will force student pilots to be permanently grounded. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the predictive efficacy of motion sickness history for airsickness of flight students. METHODS: A motion sickness history questionnaire with four different scores was used to predict airsickness of student pilots in the Air Force Academy. T…

Motion sickness in mice and conditioned taste aversion.

Forty-eight male mice in 6 groups were studied. Conditioned taste aversion (CTA) in mice was produced by various motions including cross-coupled acceleration, rotation to two directions (with or without visual field) and linear acceleration. Deprived of water for 24 hours, the mice were exposed to motion immediately after drinking a novel solution, 0.15% saccharin. All groups received two pairings of CTA training related to motion. The results showed that both of cross-coupled and rotation produced frank CTA and former was far more obvious than the latter. In addition, motion with visual field

Chinese hyper-susceptibility to vection-induced motion sickness.

Little is known about the factors that control individual differences in susceptible to motion sickness. A serendipitous observation in our laboratory that most Chinese subjects become motion sick prompted this study. We used a rotating optokinetic drum to provoke motion sickness and compared gastric responses and symptom reports of Chinese, European-American, and African-American subjects. There was no difference in the responses of European-American and African-American subjects; however, Chinese subjects showed significantly greater disturbances in gastric activity and reported significantl…

Comparison of treatment strategies for Space Motion Sickness.

Treatment strategies for Space Motion Sickness were compared using the results of postflight oral debriefings. Standardized questionnaires were administered to all crewmembers immediately following Space Shuttle flights by NASA flight surgeons. Cases of Space Motion Sickness were graded as mild, moderate or severe based on published criteria, and medication effectiveness was judged based on subjective reports of symptom relief. Since October 1989, medication effectiveness is reported inflight through Private Medical Conferences with the crew. A symptom matrix was analyzed for 19 crewmembers tr…

[The motion sickness under reversing goggles (1st report)].

We observed locomotion and motion sickness in 10 normal adults wearing reversing goggles while moving outdoors. Horizontal reversal of the visual field produced moderate to severe ataxia and motion sickness in all subjects except one. There was marked variability in the sensitivity among different subjects. In contrast, vertical reversal produced no symptoms. Confusion of information relation to spatial orientation possibly caused both the motion sickness and abnormal locomotion. Horizontal reversal of visual information produces disorientation because visual information is equal in importance…

Pharmacology in space. Part 2. Controlling motion sickness.

In this second article in the two-part series on pharmacology in space, Claire Lathers and colleagues discuss the pharmacology of drugs used to control motion sickness in space and note that the pharmacology of the 'ideal' agent has yet to be worked out. That motion sickness may impair the pharmacological action of a drug by interfering with its absorption and distribution because of alteration of physiology is a problem unique to pharmacology in space. The authors comment on the problem of designing suitable ground-based studies to evaluate the pharmacological effect of drugs to be used in sp…
