Disseminated mycosis in a killer whale (Orcinus orca).

Hematological findings in a female killer whale (Orcinus orca) undergoing rehabilitation after sudden severe anorexia revealed continuing in … eritis of cardiac blood vessels, and bronchopneumonia with numerous typical Aspergillus-like fungi. Mucor-like structures in granulomas in the heart and skeletal muscle and Aspergillus-like fungi in the lungs were identified using periodic acid-Schiff, Gomori methenamine silver stain, and immunohistochemistry. The present case involves dual infection wi …

Mucormycosis of the vulva following bone marrow transplantation.

Mucormycosis is uncommon in bone marrow transplant recipients. Primary cutaneous mucor in any setting is unusual. It may mimic necrotizing bacterial infection particularly in patients with severe neutropenia. We report a case of vulvar mucormycosis in a transplant recipient. Diagnosis depends on histological identification of fungal hyphae invading tissue and blood vessels.

Mucormycosis in hatchling Florida softshell turtles.

Six hatchling softshell turtles selected from a group of approximately 400 with circular gray integumentary lesions were submitted for clinical evaluation. The turtles died within 24 hours. Histologic examination of the carapace revealed ulcerative epidermitis, with bacterial colonies and tightly packed groups of fungi. A Mucor sp was isolated from the lesions.

[Pulmonary mucormycosis in an HIV-infected patient].

A 51-year-old man, known to have chronic-aggressive hepatitis B, HIV infection and exertional dyspnoea, was hospitalized because of acute ph … m respiratory failure. Autopsy revealed interstitial pneumonia throughout the lung as well as focal mucor infiltrations in the wall of middle-calibre lung veins. Mucor is a ubiquitous, facultatively pathogenic mold fungus.

Pulmonary Mucormycosis Over 130 Years: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Mucor is a ubiquitous fungus that belongs to the family of Zygomycetes, though a noninvasive saprophyte in the normal host, it can cause life threatening infections in immunocompromised patients, including angioinvasive pulmonary mucormycosis; a disease notorious for its high mortality. This article tracks the ever-changing management of pulmonary mucormycosis over the last 130 years, and how this affected mortality.

[A case of pulmonary mucormycosis accompanied by lymphocytic leukemia successfully treated by pulmonary lobectomy].

A 51 years old man with acute lymphocytic leukemia who was treated with antileukemic chemotherapy, developed sepsis and pneumonia. Secondary infection with Mucor intervened with abscess formation cured by lobectomy. The patient is doing well without evidence of recurrence, and treated successfully with anti-leukemic chemotherapy. Surgical treatment offers the last chance of survival in similar cases.

Molecular characterization and virulence of fungal pathogens associated with mass mortalities in hilsa Shad (Tenualosa ilisha).

The rising incidence of invasive microbial infections and the expanding spectrum of pathogens make early and accurate identification of the causative pathogen a daunting task. Accurate diagnosis enables the identification and characterization of microbes and offers new possibilities for the control and prevention of infectious diseases. For the first time, we isolated and characterized three fungal species, viz., Mucor circinelloides, Fusarium equiseti, and F. incarnatum from hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha). The characterization was based on fungus morphology (in vitro culture and microscopy), molecu…

Intestinal mucormycosis in a captive tiger.

Mucormycosis is an angioinvasive fungal infection caused by ubiquitous saprophytic fungi of the order Mucorales. In humans, the infection is generally caused by inhalation of spores or traumatic inoculation in cutaneous wounds, typically affecting immunocompromised patients. In animals, Mucorales infection is common in cattle, but is rare in the other species, including felids. No cases of mucormycosis have been reported to date in non-domestic felids, to our knowledge. We describe a case of mucormycosis in a 5-y-old female captive tiger (Panthera tigris). The affected tiger was part of a grou…

Central venous catheter-associated fungemia secondary to mucormycosis.

Mucormycosis can cause fatal infections in immuno-compromised persons. Rhinocerebral and pulmonary disease predominate. Diagnosis is challenging, dissemination frequent, and mortality high. Positive blood cultures are rare. We report the first case of central venous catheter-associated mucormycosis fungemia (Mucor circinelloides). Early diagnosis and multi-modal therapy led to clinical and microbiological cure.

Pulmonary mucormycosis with cervical lymph node involvement in a patient with acute myeloid leukaemia: a case report.

Here we describe a rare case of pulmonary mucormycosis and simultaneous cervical lymphadenitis in a patient with acute myeloid leukaemia. The patient was successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B. The diagnosis of Mucor is very difficult, especially in severely immunocompromised patients. This report seems to be the first case about documented lymph node involvement by mucormycosis in humans.

Management of bronchovascular mucormycosis in a diabetic: a surgical success.

Although cases of pulmonary mucor are scarce, diabetics account for a large percentage of these patients. The synergism of diabetes mellitus and mucormycosis poses potentially devastating bronchopulmonary complications, warranting urgent intervention. This report reviews the efficient workup, along with successful medical and surgical management, of a patient with pulmonary mucormycosis, with evidence of superior vena cava invasion.

Hepatic and small bowel mucormycosis after chemotherapy in a patient with acute lymphocytic leukemia.

Mucormycosis is a rare but invasive opportunistic fungal infection with increased frequency during chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. The clinical infections due to Mucor include rhinocerebral, pulmonary, cutaneous, gastrointestinal and disseminated diseases. The first two are the most common diseases and all entities are associated with a high mortality rate. Still hepatic involvement of Mucor is rarely reported. We experienced a case of hepatic and small bowel mucormycosis in a 56-year-old woman after induction chemotherapy for B-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia. Initial symptoms were a high f…

Mandibular Mucormycosis Following Severe COVID-19 in a Patient With Chronic Drug Abuse: A Case Report.

Mucormycosis is an infection caused by mucoral fungi, particularly the genera Rhizopus, Rhizomucor, and Mucor. It leads to invasive necrotic lesions primarily in the nose and palate, manifesting symptoms such as pain, fever, orbital cellulitis, proptosis, and purulent rhinorrhea, among others. The predominant manifestations of this infection include rhino-orbital-brain and pulmonary forms, which occur predominantly in individuals with immunosuppression or diabetes. Mucormycosis is an uncommon pathology associated with a high mortality rate. Standard treatment involves the use of antimycotics a…
