Representative case summaries of patients with different types of neurogenic bladder diagnosed by combined cystometric-perineal electromyography and treated with bethanechol (Urecholine) are presented. Determination of the activity of the periurethral striated muscle in relation to bladder dysfunction is extremely important in the selection of patients for bethanechol therapy. In the absence of structural obstruction, bethanechol can be used in patients with (1) the early phase of coordinated reflex neurogenic bladder and sphincter when there is incomplete bladder emptying due to feeble or uns

To investigate whether the pig could be considered a suitable model to study lower urinary tract function and dysfunction, the pelvic urethra of 24 slaughtered male pigs were collected, and the associated muscles were macroscopically, histologically and histochemically analyzed. In cross-sections of the urethra, a muscular complex composed of an inner layer of smooth muscle and an outer layer of striated muscle that are not separated by fascial planes was observed. A tunica muscularis, composed of differently oriented smooth muscle bundles, is only evident in the proximal part of the pelvic ur

The rectum and anal canal form the last portion of the gastrointestinal tract. The rectum serves as a reservoir for fecal contents, and the anal canal regulates continence and defecation via synchronization of events regulated by complex interactions between sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, striated and smooth muscle, and environmental factors. Normal function can be compromised by various pathologies. Investigation into these pathologies includes a detailed history and thorough physical exam and can be augmented by a number of different studies, including manometry, electromyelography,

A pig rhabdomyosarcoma cell line (PRUM59) was established, and the immuno(histo)chemical and cytogenetic characterization of these cells was determined. At various swine farms in the Netherlands, pigs were observed that had solitary or multiple skin nodules, which were diagnosed as rhabdomyosarcomas. Cells of a tumor derived from a 3.5-week-old female pig were cultured for immunochemical and cytogenetic analyses. The cell line had characteristic features of undifferentiated muscle cells, similar to those observed in tumor tissue sections; they contained titin, a high-molecular weight protein s

Zidovudine (AZT) inhibits HIV-1 replication in AIDS. A limiting side effect is AZT-induced toxic myopathy. Molecular changes in a rat model of AZT-induced toxic myopathy in vivo helped define pathogenetic molecular, biochemical, and ultrastructural toxic events in skeletal muscle and supported clinical and in vitro findings. After 35 d of AZT treatment, selective changes in rat striated muscle were localized ultrastructurally to mitochondria, and included swelling, cristae disruption, and myelin figures. Decreased muscle mitochondrial (mt) DNA, mtRNA, and decreased mitochondrial polypeptide sy

In the course of performing a detailed dissection of adult rat to map the cutaneous nerves of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar levels a small and unexpected structure was isolated. It appeared to be a cutaneous striated muscle and was observed in both male and female rats and in mice but absent from cats and humans. With the skin reflected laterally from midline, the muscle lies closely apposed to the lateral border of the Thoracic Trapezius (Spinotrapezius) muscle and is easily missed in standard gross dissections. Focussed prosections were performed to identify the origin, insertion, and cours

The VAPB/ALS8 major sperm protein domain (vMSP) is implicated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and spinal muscular atrophy, yet its function in the nervous system is not well understood. In Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila, the vMSP is cleaved from its transmembrane anchor and secreted in a cell type-specific fashion. We show that vMSPs secreted by neurons act on Lar-like protein-tyrosine phosphatase and Roundabout growth cone guidance receptors expressed in striated muscle. This signaling pathway promotes Arp2/3-dependent actin remodeling and mitochondrial localization to actin-rich musc

Muscle weakness is a hallmark of inherited or acquired myopathies. It is a major cause of functional impairment and can advance to life-threatening respiratory insufficiency. During the past decade, several small-molecule drugs that improve the contractility of skeletal muscle fibers have been developed. In this review, we provide an overview of the available literature and the mechanisms of action of small-molecule drugs that modulate the contractility of sarcomeres, the smallest contractile units in striated muscle, by acting on myosin and troponin. We also discuss their use in the treatment

MG53 is predominantly expressed in striated muscles. The role of MG53 in diabetes has gradually been elucidated but is still full of controversy. Some reports have indicated that MG53 is upregulated in animal models with metabolic disorders and that muscle-specific MG53 upregulation is sufficient to induce whole-body insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome through targeting both the insulin receptor (IR) and insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1) for ubiquitin-dependent degradation. Additionally, MG53 has been identified as a myokine/cardiokine that is secreted from striated muscles into the b

By means of the aluminum-formaldehyde (ALFA) fluorescence technique for monoamine visualization the distribution of catecholamines was studied in the caudal spinal cord, particularly in relation to motoneurons innervating pelvic structures. In the lumbosacral cord all parts of the spinal gray matter were found to contain catecholamines. In the dorsal horn the most intense fluorescence was seen in the superficial layers. The motoneuron neuropil exhibited the most prominent catecholamine-fluorescence of the ventral horn layers. In the sixth lumbar segment, which contains the motor nuclei that in

The Popeye domain-containing gene family encodes a novel class of cAMP effector proteins in striated muscle tissue. In this short review, we first introduce the protein family and discuss their structure and function with an emphasis on their role in cyclic AMP signalling. Another focus of this review is the recently discovered role of POPDC genes as striated muscle disease genes, which have been associated with cardiac arrhythmia and muscular dystrophy. The pathological phenotypes observed in patients will be compared with phenotypes present in null and knockin mutations in zebrafish and mous

The developmental anatomy of the striated urinary sphincter remains controversial and is scantly documented in children. We compared its structure and configuration in the fetus, infant and adult to determine anatomical differences among these groups. We removed 25 postmortem specimens from fetuses, infants and children, which were fixed and stained for histological study. Ages ranged from 14 weeks of gestation to 12 years postpartum. Transverse and mid sagittal sections were obtained from the bladder neck to the membranous urethra in male and the whole urethra in female subjects. At the level

BACKGROUND: : The role of Toxascaris leonina in visceral larva migrans is controversial. This study aimed to investigate the migratory behavior of T. leonina larvae across different organs in mice.
METHODS: Six-week-old Swiss albino mice (n = 26) were randomly allocated into six experimental groups and one control group. Each mouse in the experimental groups was orally inoculated with 1,000 embryonated T. leonina eggs. The animals were euthanized at 2, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 dpi (days post-infection). Tissue samples were examined for larval presence and associated pathological changes using dig

Anatomical and functional studies on the autonomic innervation as well as the location of airway receptors in the air-bladder of lepisosteids are very fragmentary. These water-breathing fishes share in common with the bichirs the presence of a glottis (not a ductus pneumaticus) opening into the esophagus. In contrast to a high concentration of neuroepithelial cells (NECs) contained in the furrowed epithelium in the lung of Polypterus, these cells are scattered as solitary cells in the glottal epithelium, and grouped to form neuroepithelial bodies (NEBs) in the mucociliated epithelium investing

The case of a young woman with giant cell polymyositis is described. She had bilateral, severe, midly painful proptosis and ophthalmoplegia. Extensive pharyngeal, laryngeal, and cardiac muscle involvement occurred 18 months later coincident with fatal cardiac arrhythmia. At autopsy, extensive muscle necrosis and giant cells were noted in extraocular, pharyngeal, laryngeal, and cardiac muscle with only minimal involvement of other striated muscles.

The ultrastructure of striated muscular tissue was studied in experiments with three groups of white mice: those infected with T. spiralis, T. pseudospiralis, and in those uninfected (controls). There was a heterogeneity of changes in the striated muscular tissue during 35-day infection. Deep damages to the contractile, trophic, energetic, supporting, and membranous apparatuses of muscle fibers are responsible for subcellular structural changes. At the same time compensatory and adaptative processes that reflect the hyperfunction of musculoskeletal tissue develop. Generally, T. spiralis causes

The present research describes the histology of the midgut, gastric caeca, and pyloric valve of Tropidacris collaris (Stoll, 1813), (Orthopetera: Romaleidae). We used light microscopy, staining (Gomori's trichrome and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)), and a routine histological analysis method (hematoxilin-eosin). The insects were obtained from, and also bred in, the Laboratory of Entomology, Department of Biology, of the Rural Federal University of Pernambuco (UFRPE). The collected material was fixed in alcoholic Botüin and embedded in paraplast. The results demonstrated that the midgut wall is co
