Musculoskeletal system in children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease: normal muscle force, decreased trabecular bone mineral density and low prevalence of vertebral fractures.

UNLABELLED: Low bone mineral density (BMD) and an increased fracture incidence are two extraintestinal complications associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We aimed to evaluate musculoskeletal traits and assess vertebral fracture (VF) rate in children and adolescents with IBD. Seventy patients with IBD with a median age of 13.8 years were included. The BMD and geometric parameters of the non-dominant tibia were assessed using pQCT. Dynamic muscle functions were evaluated using jumping mechanography. VFs were assessed according to the semiquantitative standardized method by Genant. T

[Kidney and bone update : the 5-year history and future of CKD-MBD. Disorders of musculoskeletal system in CKD ; bone fracture and periarticular calcification].

Chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) affects life expectancy through vascular calcification, and impairs patient's activity of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QOL) through bone fracture and periarticular calcification. In CKD patients, vitamin D deficiency and secondary hyperparathyroidism impairs bone strength, and muscle dysfunction related to vitamin D deficiency also causes easy fall, leading to the high risk of bone fracture. Bone fracture not only aggravates ADL and QOL but increases the risk of mortality. Periarticular calcification such as tumoral calcinos

Systemic administration of all-trans retinoic acid modulated circulating immune cells but failed to improve healing in a preclinical model of musculoskeletal trauma.

Musculoskeletal trauma is exceedingly common and experiences a high incidence of complications, including bone non-union. Previous studies have implicated a dysregulated systemic immune response after injury as an important factor contributing to complications. We have previously identified a negative correlation between circulating myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and bone regeneration in a rat model of composite bone and muscle trauma. MDSCs are an immature, heterogeneous cell population of myeloid lineage that expands after injury and possesses potent immunosuppressive functions inc

Identifying the Most Important Confounders When Assessing the Association Between Low-Grade Systemic Inflammation and Musculoskeletal Pain: A Modified Delphi Study.

OBJECTIVE: The association between low-grade systemic inflammation and musculoskeletal pain may be influenced by multiple factors. However, little is known about the relative importance of these factors, and few studies account for them. This Delphi study aimed to reach consensus on the most important confounders which influence the association between low-grade systemic inflammation and musculoskeletal pain. METHODS: The panel consisted of 48 experts. In Round 1, the experts proposed what they believed were important confounders. In Round 2, the experts indicated for each confounder whether

Forced treadmill running reduces systemic inflammation yet worsens upper limb discomfort in a rat model of work-related musculoskeletal disorders.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders can result from prolonged repetitive and/or forceful movements. Performance of an upper extremity high repetition high force task increases serum pro-inflammatory cytokines and upper extremity sensorimotor declines in a rat model of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Since one of the most efficacious treatments for musculoskeletal pain is exercise, this study investigated the effectiveness of treadmill running in preventing these responses. METHODS: Twenty-nine young adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were used. Nineteen were trained for 5 weeks to pul

Demystifying Our Knowledge of Stem Cells and Progenitor Cells Part I: Basic Concepts Relevant to the Treatment of Osteonecrosis and Other Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System.

BACKGROUND: The fundamental biological principles underlying bone healing are highly relevant to the treatment of osteonecrosis, the local death of bone marrow commonly due to the use of corticosteroids or excessive alcohol. METHODS: Injury to bone initiates a preprogrammed series of events that are sensed by resident macrophages or osteomacs, and subsequently involve cells of the hematopoietic, mesenchymal, and angiogenic lineages. Intercellular crosstalk among macrophages and other immune cells, osteoclasts, mesenchymal stem cells, and angiogenic precursors creates a local microenvironment

SupportPrim-a computerized clinical decision support system for stratified care for patients with musculoskeletal pain complaints in general practice: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders represented 149 million years lived with disability world-wide in 2019 and are the main cause of years lived with disability worldwide. Current treatment recommendations are based on "one-size fits all" principle, which does not take into account the large degree of biopsychosocial heterogeneity in this group of patients. To compensate for this, we developed a stratified care computerized clinical decision support system for general practice based on patient biopsychosocial phenotypes; furthermore, we added personalized treatment recommendations based on s

Systemic C-reactive protein and vitamin D are not associated with development of chronic musculoskeletal pain over a 2-7 year follow-up period.

Prior studies report association between elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), low vitamin D and development of chronic musculoskeletal pain. However, these small studies did not consider relevant and potentially influential biopsychosocial factors. This longitudinal study using UK Biobank data explored associations between baseline (2006-2010; T1) systemic (blood) levels of CRP and vitamin D, biopsychosocial and lifestyle factors, and later presence of chronic musculoskeletal pain (2012-2013; T2; neck/shoulder, back, hip, knee, and 'any pain' aggregation). All participants were free of pain at T

Ergonomic impact of open- versus closed-console robotic systems on surgeon fatigue and musculoskeletal strain: A prospective, experimental, wet-lab comparative study.

INTRODUCTION: Robotic-assisted surgery has transformed minimally invasive surgery by enhancing dexterity, visualisation and surgeon ergonomics. However, significant variations exist in robotic console architecture, primarily between open-console and closed-console systems. Although robotic surgery is generally considered to offer ergonomic benefits over laparoscopic surgery, evidence comparing ergonomic outcomes between console designs remains limited. To compare the ergonomic impact of open- versus closed-console robotic systems on surgeon fatigue, musculoskeletal strain and workload. PATIEN

[The effectiveness of the use of non-drug treatment complexes and their impact on quality of life indicators, the psychosomatic status of patients with residual brucellosis with lesions of the musculoskeletal system].

UNLABELLED: Secondary focal lesions of the musculoskeletal system that occur with residual brucellosis are characterized by a variety of localizations and simultaneous damage to several groups of joints, a deterioration in the quality of life and a high percentage of disability in people of working age. At present, there are many different schemes for the treatment and rehabilitation of developed residual brucellosis, in which, in addition to the "basic" course, including systemic anti-inflammatory therapy, much attention is paid to physiotherapeutic procedures, but the choice of the most effe…

IgG autoantibody to the collagen-like region of Clq in hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, and 6 other musculoskeletal or rheumatic diseases.

We previously found that the Clq precipitin in sera from patients with hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis syndrome is an IgG autoantibody to Clq. We report here a prevalence study of this autoantibody in 162 patients with musculoskeletal or rheumatic diseases including hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and rheumatoid arthritis uncomplicated by vasculitis. The autoantibody, which binds only to the collagen-like region of Clq, was found almost exclusively in hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis syndrome (100%) and SLE (35%) sera. Our
