[Bifonazole for the topical treatment of surface mycoses--progress!].

69 patients with superficial mycosis were treated with 1% Bifonazol cream once a day. 48 of them who suffered from tinea pedis interdigitalis received Bifonazol for 3 weeks, the remaining 21 patients who had superficial candidiasis applied it over a period of 4 weeks. The local tolerance of the cream has been very good. Control examinations 3 and 14 days after treatment proved 59 (89%) of all patients to be cured, i.e. 40 of those who had suffered from tinea pedis and 19 of the group with candidiasis.

Aspergillosis and other systemic mycoses. The growing problem.

To measure the incidence in the United States of systemic mycoses necessitating hospitalization, we reviewed discharge records of 1,875 hospitals participating in the Professional Activity Study of the Commission on Professional and Hospital Activities. Projected incidence rates in 1976 ranged from 23.0 per million for histoplasmosis to 0.2 per million for blastomycosis. High prevalences of leukemia or lymphoma (5.9% to 10.2%) or of other malignancies (9.9% to 13.2%) were recorded in patients with aspergillosis, candidasis, or cryptococcosis. High prevalences of chronic obstructive lung diseas…

Intravenous and intrathecal miconazole therapy for systemic mycoses.

Ten patients with systemic mycoses, including five with fungal meningitis, were treated with intravenously or intrathecally administered miconazole, or both. Minimal inhibitory concentrations of miconazole for clinical isolates of Coccidioides immitis, Cryptococcus neoformans and Candida albicans were less than 0.6 microg per ml. Except for pruritus of variable degrees, the drug was well tolerated both intravenously and intrathecally by all patients. No measurable impairment of renal, hepatic or bone marrow function was observed in patients after 4(1/2) months of intravenous therapy. No hemato…

Endemic systemic mycoses: coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, paracoccidioidomycosis and blastomycosis.

Endemic deep or systemic mycoses are common in specific geographical areas of the world. Coccidioidomycosis is present in semi-desert areas, histoplasmosis and paracoccidioidomycosis in tropical regions and blastomycosis belongs to temperate climates. The two former are widely distributed in the American continent and some tropical regions of the world; the third is limited to Central and South America, and the last to North America and Central and East Africa. These mycoses all have a similar pathogenesis, as the inoculum enters the host through the respiratory tract. Cutaneous manifestations…

Invasive opportunistic mycoses: clinical trials review, 2007-2008.

Invasive fungal infections are important causes of morbidity and mortality in severely ill patients. The past decade has seen considerable expansion in the development of new antifungal compounds, and clinical trials continue to define their role in our antifungal armamentarium. This brief article summarizes the most pivotal clinical trials in the settings of treatment and prophylaxis of invasive opportunistic mycoses published between 2007 and 2008.
