Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT), also known as inflammatory pseudotumor or plasma cell granuloma, is an uncommon soft tissue tumor of mesenchymal origin with low to intermediate malignant potential. IMTs are most commonly located in the lung, abdomen/pelvis, or retroperitoneum, primarily affecting children and young adults. Although metastasis is rare, IMTs can recur after surgical resection, as oftentimes resection is limited due to infiltration with surrounding tissue. Here, we present a challenging case of IMT in a 22-year-old male who presented with chest pain and shortness of bre

Epithelioid inflammatory myofibroblastic sarcoma, a variant of the inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, is a rare tumor that is not well described in the radiologic literature. We present a case of a 14-year-old male adolescent who presented with fever, fatigue, and weight loss symptoms and was found to have an abdominal mass on contrast enhanced CT. Initial differentials included lymphoma, pheochromocytoma, desmoid, and sarcoma, and pathological evaluation revealed an epithelioid inflammatory myofibroblastic sarcoma. The mass was separate from the surrounding structures of the left upper abdom

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory pseudotumor encompasses a broad range of non-neoplastic and neoplastic entities, including inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs). Because it is a rare mesenchymal tumor of unknown etiology and pathogenesis, and its clinical symptoms and radiologic features are not distinctive, intracranial IMT could be misdiagnosed as other extra-axial tumors. Here, we present a case of intracranial IMT suspected to be a brain abscess.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this case, a 73-year-old woman presented headaches, nausea, and vertigo. Brain computed tomography (CT) and magnetic reson

After acute myocardial infarction, the heart mainly relies on fibrosis remodeling repair to maintain the structural and functional integrity of the heart, however, excessive fibrosis is an important cause of heart failure. Macrophages play an important regulatory role in cardiac fibrosis and have been found to transform into myofibroblasts through their own phenotype. Based on the existing evidence and previous research results, we summarizes the potential and mechanism of macrophage-to-myofibroblast transition (MMT) in cardiac fibrosis. Notwithstanding the burgeoning interest in MMT within th…

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) were first described by Harold Brunn in 1939. IMTs are mainly found in the lungs and other sites of the body; hence, its occurrence in the adrenal gland is exceptional. In the literature, less than 10 cases of IMTs in the adrenal gland have been reported. The etiology of IMT remains unknown, with post-inflammatory changes and a neoplastic origin being proposed. We present a case of a 19-year-old woman and adrenal gland IMT. The patient presented with abdominal pain and low cardiac output without hypovolemic shock. Computed tomography revealed a tumor

Uterine inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are rare and, as in other localisations, they are associated with ALK rearrangements and ALK immunohistochemical expression. They are more frequently found during pregnancy, and in this context, they show different characteristics compared to other uterine IMTs. Here, we report the case of a uterine IMT discovered during delivery, and being associated with a previously unreported THBS1-INSR fusion.

A previously healthy 15-year-old adolescent female presented with dependent edema, ascites, and dyspnea on exertion. The result of her initial evaluation was consistent with constrictive pericarditis in the setting of local low-grade spindle cell sarcoma. She was unresponsive to traditional medical management and required concurrent mass resection and radical pericardiectomy for definitive treatment. (Level of Difficulty: Intermediate.).

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a very rare mesenchymal tumor that can behave as a locally benign or aggressive lesion. Here, we present an extremely rare case of IMT involving the subglottic of a middle-aged male. Steroid therapy treatment alleviated dyspnea, but the recurrence of dyspnea was reported two months later. Both sides of the subglottic tumor were excised following treatment, and the surgical specimens were subjected to histopathological evaluation and diagnosis for IMT. At 4 years after excision, follow-up laryngoscopy revealed symmetric vocal cords without evidence of

Epithelioid inflammatory myofibroblastic sarcoma (EIMS) is a rare variant of the inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. It has an aggressive clinical course and a high rate of recurrence. EIMS primarily affects children and young adults. Hereby, we report this entity in a 4-month-old infant who presented with an abdominal mass. Imaging studies revealed a large hypodense mesentery-based lesion involving the right half and mid-region of the abdomen. The mass with an attached segment of the small bowel was excised in toto. Grossly, a large encapsulated tumor was identified arising from the mesentery

A 42-year old male was referred with a 6-week history of new onset dyspnea. The patient had normal vital signs, no relevant medical history and the only abnormality was a left sided inspiratory wheeze. No abnormalities were seen on the chest X-ray. A bronchoscopy was performed which showed a well-circumscribed hypervasculated mass in the left main bronchus. A biopsy was taken, which was complicated after the procedure by dislocation of the mass and coughed up by the patient. Both samples were send for pathologic review. A contrast CT was performed which showed a localized remaining mass in the

Objective: To explore the ultrasonic manifestations of mesenteric inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) in children. Methods: Seven patients with mesenteric IMTs were retrospectively analyzed. The ultrasonic manifestations, such as the locations, sizes, morphology, borders, internal echo, blood flow, and metastasis, of the tumors were detected. Results: In all the seven pediatric patients, a solitary lesion was found for the mesenteric IMTs, including five cases in the ileocecal mesentery and two cases in the mesentery of ascending colon. All the single tumors were revealed as irregular h

The inclusion of microRNAs (miRNAs) in extracellular microvesicles/exosomes (named cardiosomes when deriving from cardiomyocytes) allows their active transportation and ensures cell-cell communication. We hypothesize that cardiosomal miRNAs play a pivotal role in the activation of myofibroblasts following ischemic injury. Using a murine model of myocardial infarction (MI), we tested our hypothesis by measuring in isolated fibroblasts and cardiosomes the expression levels of a set of miRNAs, which are upregulated in cardiomyocytes post-MI and involved in myofibroblast phenoconversion. We found …

An inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour is a mesenchymal neoplasm that mostly involves the lung and rarely involves the oesophagus. Surgery has been most commonly used for the treatment of oesophageal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours but there are no definite guidelines for their diagnosis and treatment. We describe the case of a 60-year-old woman presenting with dysphagia and poor appetite who was diagnosed with a submucosal oesophageal tumour by contrast enhanced computed tomography and ultrasonography endoscopy. She was treated successfully by endoscopic submucosal dissection with no com

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are rare and usually appear in childhood and adolescence. These tumors often take a benign course, but tend to reoccur in a quarter of cases and metastasize locally. Distant IMT metastases are extremely uncommon. To our knowledge, metastatic spread to the heart has not been reported. We present a case of a 43-year-old woman with small intestinal IMT metastatic spread to the cavity of the left ventricle, stomach, liver, vertebra, and pelvic bones. The cardiac tumor was resected, and the patient survived for 9 months. She dies because the progression of
