[Construction of distinctive exhibitions and narrative innovation in specialized medical museums: an analysis based on the construction practices of three dental museums].

To explore how specialized medical museums can break through homogenization on exhibition and construct Chinese narratives within the modern medical system, this study takes the International Museum of Stomatology, the West China Museum of Stomatology (formerly the Museum of Chinese Stomatology), and the Museum of the History of Chinese Stomatology as research objects to examine their exhibition construction and narrative practices based on field investigations, interviews, and document analysis. The study finds that, relying on disciplinary traditions and accumulated research resources, the t

Voices on Fire: Narratives on Nurse Activism Amid Power Dynamics in the Philippines.

This study explored the narratives of 10 Filipino nurse activists who transformed experiences of suffering, exploitation, and professional marginalization into organized resistance and advocacy. In the Philippine context, nurses continue to face poor working conditions, inadequate compensation, migration pressures, and political threats such as red-tagging, yet little is known about how they navigate the shift from endurance to activism. Guided by narrative inquiry and informed by Foucauldian archeology and genealogy, the study examined interviews alongside position statements and news article

Modeling complex narrative memory via sentence recognition: A marriage of distributional semantic models and an episodic model (MINERVA 2).

Recent research has integrated representations from distributional semantic models (DSMs) with traditional episodic memory models. While these integrated frameworks show promise in modeling single-word recognition, their applicability to the recognition of full sentences-particularly those embedded in complex narrative contexts-remains tentative. In this study, participants read short narratives and completed an OLD/NEW sentence recognition task, administered either immediately or after a delay of >10 hours. The recognition test contained four types of sentence probes: verbatim (matching the n

Identifying Stigma Phenotypes in Social Media Narratives of Substance Use: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with substance use problems experience stigma in different contexts. Identifying characteristic situations in which stigma occurs or manifests-stigma phenotypes-can serve as important leverage points for future intervention. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to (1) identify stigma phenotypes expressed in social media narratives related to substance use stigma and (2) explore the similarities and differences between the stigma phenotypes from a social ecological perspective. METHODS: We collected Reddit posts pertaining to 3 substances-alcohol, cannabis, and opioids. We perfo

[Narrative objects of science: From industrialization to the cobotization of the interpretive experience].

Drawing on critical theory and philosophical hermeneutics, this essay examines the processes of industrialization and "cobotization" of scientific practice, understood as the incorporation of generative artificial intelligence into the production and validation of scientific knowledge. The text addresses, first, the narrative objects of science, understood as devices for building consensus within scientific communities; second, the effects of the industrialization of scientific practice, the expansion of the scientific-editorial industrial complex, and the loss of the social meaning of the tex

Holding Space and Time for Difference.

This commentary discusses themes drawn from twelve narratives by parents of people with Down syndrome. While each parent described unique aspects of their children and of their family's experience, a common thread throughout was making room for the different ways in which their children experienced and navigated the world. They described their children's differences sometimes being honored and sometimes being devalued, and in their narratives consistently advocate for ways in which we can hold space for those differences. Healthcare institutions, schools, and family life are all sites where th

Visual Stimulus Materials Used in Spoken Narrative Discourse Elicitation After Traumatic Brain Injury: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: Management of discourse is acknowledged as a critical component of speech-language pathology practice with cognitive communication after traumatic brain injury (TBI). This scoping review aimed to collate the visual materials that are being used in empirical research for spoken narrative elicitation post-TBI, in both assessment and treatment contexts. We aimed to examine the format, structure, and sources for visuals used. Discourse analyses were also investigated. METHOD: The research was conducted and reported as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Anal

Symbolic access: medical students' awareness of institutional culture and its influence on learning, a phenomenographic study.

BACKGROUND: The discussion of access in medical education has its focus largely on physical and epistemological access, leaving a qualitative gap regarding sociocultural factors which enable access in this context. This study introduces and defines symbolic access, a concept with a specific lens on sociocultural inclusion, and the influence it has on student learning within the South African medical education landscape. METHODS: A phenomenographic design was used to explore students' conceptions of symbolic access and its impact on learning. One-on-one exploratory interviews were conducted wi

Sex differences in autistic adults: A preliminary study showing differences in mentalizing, but not in narrative coherence.

Studying autism might be a complex endeavor due to its clinical heterogeneity. Little is currently known about potential sex differences in autistic adults, especially regarding mentalizing and narrative coherence. In this study, male and female participants told a personal story about one of their most positive and most negative life events and performed two mentalizing tasks. One of these mentalizing tasks was a recently developed Picture and Verbal Sequencing task that has shown cerebellar recruitment, and which requires mentalizing in a sequential context (i.e., participants chronologicall

The Relations between Narrative Identity and Personality Pathology among Clinical Adolescents: Findings from a Multi-Ethnic Asian Sample.

Adolescence is a period where personality difficulties can start emerging. At the same time, a great deal of development in narrative identity takes place. Given that identity impairments are a key feature in personality pathology, it is useful to understand how pathological traits and narrative identity features are related. The current study addressed this by linking pathological personality trait domains to narrative identity features in clinically-referred Singaporean adolescents. Participants (n = 118, Mage = 16.82) wrote narratives about a turning point in their lives. These narratives w

Confronting misconceptions of public housing communities: A qualitative report of community-informed narratives by community members and partners.

Objectives were (a) to understand a community-informed narrative, as told by community members (CMs) and community partners (CPs), about the strengths, experiences, and perspectives of public housing communities; and (b) to analyze similarities and differences between CMs' and CPs' experiences and perspectives. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 22 CMs of public housing (ages 26-58, 100% female caregivers, 96% Black, 4% multiethnic) and 43 CPs (ages 28-78, 67.4% female, 81.4% Black and African American). Four themes were derived from the CM and CP interviews: (1) counters to public nar

Reported speech in individuals with Down syndrome: First evidence.

INTRODUCTION: Narratives are enriched by taking the perspective of the protagonists, which can be expressed using reported speech. Nevertheless, the use of reported speech is unaddressed internationally among individuals with Down syndrome. METHOD: Narratives of 28 children and adolescents with Down syndrome were collected using a non-verbal picture book. Occurrence and forms of reported speech were analysed and compared to typically-developing children (TD; n = 33). RESULTS: Participants from both populations use reported speech in their narratives with a comparable proportion. Nevertheless

The Dreamwork of the Symptom: Reading Structural Racism and Family History in a Drug Addiction.

A key tenet of critical health research is that individual symptoms must be considered in light of the social and political contexts that shape or, in some cases, produce them. Precisely how oppressive social forces give rise to individual symptoms, however, remains challenging to theorize. This article contributes to debates over the interpretation of symptoms through a close reading of the case of Leon, an African American man struggling with an addiction to crack cocaine. Leon presented a complex illness narrative in which his addiction was clearly a product of structural racism, but also t

"It's Just Flourishing Hope Everywhere": The Experiences of Incarcerated Men Sharing Their Stories.

Of the 2.2 million people incarcerated throughout the United States, 93% are men. The current phenomenological study adds to the existing body of qualitative research on the lived experiences of men who are incarcerated and supports storytelling as a therapeutic technique. Four essential themes were revealed through an analysis of participant interviews: (1) substance use, (2) anticipation of storytelling, (3) the act of storytelling, and (4) reflections on storytelling. Understanding these experiences can assist in the development of storytelling-based interventions and community programing t

Making sense of fidelity: young Africans' cross-national and longitudinal representations of fidelity and infidelity in their HIV-related creative narratives, 1997-2014.

Mutual fidelity and partner reduction have been identified as key behavioural strategies to prevent HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly following recognition of the role that multiple concurrent sexual partnerships play in driving generalised HIV epidemics. We analysed social representations of fidelity and infidelity in a sample of 1,343 narratives about HIV written by young Africans between 1997 and 2014. The narratives were written at four different time points (1997, 2005, 2008, 2014) by authors aged 10-24 in urban and rural areas of Senegal, Burkina Faso, South-east Niger

Foetal alcohol spectrum disorder and Investigative interviewing: A systematic review highlighting clinical and legal implications and recommendations.

Individuals with foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are estimated to be 19 times more likely to encounter the criminal justice system (CJS) in comparison to individuals without FASD. During encounters with the CJS, investigative interviews are employed to obtain accurate information from suspects, victims or witnesses of crime. A systematic search using PRISMA guidelines was performed to identify empirical studies published that have explored the questioning of the FASD population within the CJS and the vulnerabilities of FASD-impacted individuals during investigative interviewing. Narratives of Recovery Over the First Year After Major Lower Limb Loss.

The objectives of this research were to extend previous research by exploring the psychosocial experiences of patients over the first year after major lower limb amputation (MLLA) and identify implications for rehabilitation practice. This research took place at a United Kingdom-based National Health Service-operated prosthetic rehabilitation center. Thirty patients were recruited who had experienced MLLA within the last year and were undertaking prosthetic rehabilitation. Data were collected through semi-structured narrative interviews, observation, and a reflexive journal and analyzed using

How Women on Probation and Parole Incorporate Trauma Into Their Identities.

The many court-involved women who have experienced trauma in their lifetimes are particularly vulnerable to the negative outcomes of trauma. The purpose of this qualitative inquiry is to understand how women who have repeatedly broken the law incorporate traumatic experiences into their identities in such a way that they increase their agency, communion, or spirituality. The research also documents the types of traumatic experiences the women included in their life stories. Informed by narrative identity theory and the related theory of posttraumatic growth, the life stories of 118 women on pr

A Narrative Review of How Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders and Cardiovascular Diseases Are Linked: An Update for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: Sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBDs), including obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea, are common among patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD), but clinicians often do not pay enough attention to SRBDs. The purpose of this narrative review is to update advanced practice registered nurses on the literature focusing on the relationship between SRBDs and CVD (eg, hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, and stroke) and on treatments that can improve SRBDs in patients with CVD. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: We conducted an electronic
