Cutaneous mast cell tumor with epitheliotropism in 3 dogs.

Epitheliotropism is an important diagnostic feature of cutaneous epitheliotropic lymphoma and canine cutaneous histiocytoma; however, although noted in certain feline mastocytic diseases, it has not been considered a feature of canine cutaneous mast cell tumor. In this study, 3 canine cutaneous mast cell tumors had epitheliotropic invasion of neoplastic mast cells into the epidermis and follicular epithelium. This unusual histologic finding was characterized by infiltrates of individual and clusters of neoplastic mast cells in the stratum basale and stratum spinosum. The mast cell origin of th

Topical therapy in the treatment of actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma.

Actinic keratosis (AK) is an evolving malignant cutaneous neoplasm. AK also is known as solar keratosis and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in situ, either solar keratotic type or keratinocytic intraepidermal neoplasia. AKs can be treated with destructive or topical therapies. This article reviews current and evolving topical therapeutic options for AKs, several of which have been shown to offer substantial benefit in the alleviation of these lesions. The topical therapies include 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), diclofenac sodium, colchicine, retinoids, and imiquimod. Topical treatment of basal cell carc

Early detection and treatment of skin cancer.

The incidence of skin cancer is increasing by epidemic proportions. Basal cell cancer remains the most common skin neoplasm, and simple excision is generally curative. Squamous cell cancers may be preceded by actinic keratoses-premalignant lesions that are treated with cryotherapy, excision, curettage or topical 5-fluorouracil. While squamous cell carcinoma is usually easily cured with local excision, it may invade deeper structures and metastasize. Aggressive local growth and metastasis are common features of malignant melanoma, which accounts for 75 percent of all deaths associated with skin

Solitary fibrous tumor of the meninges.

The clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of a case of solitary fibrous tumor of the meninges at the base of the brain are reported. The tumor caused clinical symptoms in a 42-year-old Caucasian male which were indicative of compression of hypothalamus, basal ganglia, and third ventricle. Radiologically it was a large extra-axial mass isointense to brain parenchyma on precontrast T1-weighted images that filled the suprasellar cistern and deformed the left cerebral peduncle. At surgery, the tumor was firm to hard and attached to dura. Histologically the tumor was composed of spindle-cel

Expression of glutathione S-transferase-pi in malignant skin tumors.

GST-pi has been known to be markedly increased in human (pre) neoplasms of several organs. In this paper, the significance of immunohistochemical detection of GST-pi in human malignant tumors of the skin was studied. In specimens from 40 patients with various skin cancers, malignant melanoma, Paget's disease and undifferentiated squamous cell carcinoma showed strong reactivity in GST-pi staining. The reactions were negative or weak in Bowen's disease, basal cell epithelioma and solar keratosis. In normal melanocytes, eccrine, apocrine, and breast gland cells stained positively but not in kerat

Gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumors. 'Plexosarcomas'.

Four plexosarcomas (gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumors) characterized by light microscopic, immunocytochemical, and ultrastructural examination, including immunoelectron microscopy in one case, are described. The four neoplasms occurred in the small intestine (duodenum, two; jejunum, one; and ileum, one) and they had an aggressive course with either local or distant metastases. The light-microscopic patterns varied from epithelioid and organoid to spindle cells, mimicking endocrine and sarcomatous neoplasms. Ultrastructurally, these tumors exhibited interdigitating cytoplasmic processes t

Rate of Benign and Malignant Secondary Tumors Associated With Nevus Sebaceous: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Nevus sebaceous (NS) is a rare congenital skin lesion affecting approximately 0.3% of all newborns. Although benign, NS lesions can harbor malignant secondary tumors. The published rate of development of these malignant tumors varies. This meta-analysis aimed to identify the rate of malignant and benign secondary neoplasms occurring in NS. METHODS: A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science from inception to April 2023. Eligible studies reported incidence or risk of secondary neoplasms in patients with NS. Two independent reviewers screened studies,

Superficial paramucosal clear cell sarcoma of the soft parts resembling melanoma in a 13-year-old boy.

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) of tendons and aponeuroses, also known as melanoma of soft parts, represents an aggressive rare malignancy that is characterized by a nested or fascicular pattern of spindled cells and a pathognomonic reciprocal translocation, t(12;22)(q13;q12), that results in the fusion of EWSR1 and ATF1 genes. Numerous recent studies have recognized the importance of a cutaneous CCS variant that can mimic a broad spectrum of entities, including spindle cell melanoma, spindle cell squamous carcinoma, cutaneous leiomyosarcoma and atypical fibroxanthoma. We report a case of a 13-year-o

Extraocular sebaceous carcinoma mimicking benign sebaceous cyst.

Extraocular sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is an exceptionally rare neoplasm and has been confused in the past with basal cell carcinoma showing sebaceous differentiation. However, in contrast to the latter tumour, SC can be an aggressive cancer. We describe the case of a 55-year-old man with a 3-year history of a 5 × 2 cm lesion on the posterior thoracic wall. It had increased in size during this period but was otherwise asymptomatic. There was no significant past medical history or lymphadenopathy. Nor was there a family history of malignancy. The lesion was totally excised. The histopathological

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma (basal cell type) of the prostate: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Prostatic adenoid cystic (basal cell) carcinoma is an extremely rare malignant epithelial neoplasm, accounting for a very low proportion of all prostate malignancies. Its clinical symptoms and imaging features are non-specific, and serum PSA levels are mostly normal or only mildly elevated, posing diagnostic challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old male presented with progressive hematuria and lower urinary tract obstruction symptoms. His PSA level was not significantly elevated. Imaging revealed a prostatic space-occupying lesion with multiple adjacent small lymph nodes. Hist

Consistent LEF-1 and MYB Immunohistochemical Expression in Human Papillomavirus-Related Multiphenotypic Sinonasal Carcinoma: A Potential Diagnostic Pitfall.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)-related multiphenotypic sinonasal carcinoma (HMSC) is a distinct, newly-described sinonasal tract neoplasm characterized by a salivary gland tumor-like appearance with myoepithelial and ductal cells, frequent surface squamous dysplasia, and relatively indolent behavior. When considering a diagnosis of HMSC, aggressive high-grade salivary gland carcinomas, particularly those with a basaloid morphology such as basal cell adenocarcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma, enter the differential diagnosis. The full morphologic and immunophenotypic profile of HMSC continues to

Epidemiology of skin cancer.

The skin is the most common site of malignancy. Due to several mostly unknown factors, the frequency of skin tumors is increasing. Except for malignant melanoma, reliable statistical data on the frequency of skin tumors are scarce. Discussion on the epidemiology of skin tumors may take different aspects and factors into consideration: (1) histogenetic type; (2) race, (3) sex; (4) age, (5) localization; (6) environment. Moreover, precancerous conditions also may play an important role in this context. Epithelial tumors, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are the most f

GATA3: a multispecific but potentially useful marker in surgical pathology: a systematic analysis of 2500 epithelial and nonepithelial tumors.

GATA3 is a transcription factor important in the differentiation of breast epithelia, urothelia, and subsets of T lymphocytes. It has been suggested to be useful in the evaluation of carcinomas of mammary or urothelial origin or metastatic carcinomas, but its distribution in normal and neoplastic tissues is incompletely mapped. In this study, we examined normal developing and adult tissues and 2040 epithelial and 460 mesenchymal or neuroectodermal neoplasms for GATA3 expression to explore its diagnostic value in surgical pathology, using monoclonal antibody (clone L50-823) and Leica Bond autom

Clear cell atypical fibroxanthoma: a case report and review of the literature.

Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is a group of cutaneous tumors characterized by a population of fusiform, epithelioid and pleomorphic cells. Clinically, AFX is commonly found on the head and neck of older adults as a solitary ulcerated nodule. Clear cell atypical fibroxanthoma is a very rare variant of AFX, with only 13 cases reported to date. The differential diagnoses often include dermal neoplasms composed of clear cells, such as squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, metastatic renal cell carcinoma and balloon cell malignant melanoma. These diagnoses can be ruled out by the typical im

Pigmented Desmoplastic Trichilemmoma Arising in Nevus Sebaceous: A Potential Mimicker of Pigmented Basal Cell Carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Trichilemmomas are a form of benign adnexal neoplasm with differentiation toward the follicular outer sheath. Nevus sebaceous (NS) of Jadassohn is a congenital malformation characterized as a nonhereditary hamartoma of the adnexal structures of the skin, mainly the pilosebaceous unit. NS represents a fertile field for the development of secondary adnexal neoplasms, commonly benign but occasionally malignant. To our knowledge, one case of a pigmented desmoplastic trichilemmoma (DT) has been reported in the English literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 36-year-old m

Multiple metastases from basal cell naevus syndrome.

A patient with basal cell naevus syndrome (Gorlin-Goltz Syndrome) is presented. Of note in the case was the extensive symmetrical tumour invasion of both external auditory canals requiring bilateral radical resection. The patient expired 14 months later, at which time the autopsy revealed widespread metastases to the pleura, diaphragm, pericardium, epicardium and myocardium. Although lung metastases have been reported in this syndrome, no cases have been reported of metastases to these sites.

Expression of endothelins and their receptors in nonmelanoma skin cancers.

BACKGROUND: Endothelins are paracrine peptides with growth-promoting and vasoactive functions for a variety of cell types. Elevated activation of the endothelin signaling pathway induces cell proliferation and/or survival and is implicated in a variety of malignancies. Increased endothelin 1 was described in solar lentigines in previous reports, raising the possibility that the endothelin pathway may be of significance in keratinocyte proliferation-related disorders. However, detailed investigation on endothelins in skin malignancies is lacking. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to survey the expre
