Bone marrow and peripheral blood HLA-G in hematologic diseases presenting with impaired erythropoiesis: HLA-G in disorders with impaired erythropoiesis.

The HLA-G molecule is expressed in few tissues and cells, such as erythroid precursors, in which it has been associated with cell signaling, maturation, and proliferation. Considering that the daily production of erythrocytes is massive, the bone marrow sHLA-G levels are higher than in peripheral plasma, and little attention has been devoted to the role of HLA-G in disorders presenting with defective erythropoiesis, we hypothesized that bone marrow could be a major source of sHLA-G to plasma. We investigated HLA-G (soluble-sHLA-G and membrane-bound) in patients presenting hematologic disorders

Hypophosphatemic osteomalacia secondary to jaw phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor: a case report with literature review.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by renal phosphate wasting, resulting in hypophosphatemia and altered bone turnover. It is most frequently caused by phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs), a rare and distinct group of neoplasms. Patients with TIO exhibit clinical features of osteomalacia, including bone and muscle pain, severe muscle weakness, gait disturbance, and increased susceptibility to fracture. PMTs exhibit pananatomic distribution, in soft tissue or bones, but are most commonly found in the lower extremities, followed by the head and ne

Oral squamous cell carcinoma in a pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina).

An adult, gravid, female pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) presented for facial swelling centered on the left mandible that was approximately 5 cm wide. Differential diagnoses included infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic origins. Definitive antemortem diagnosis was not possible, and the macaque's condition worsened despite supportive care. Necropsy findings included a mandibular mass that was locally invasive and expansile, encompassing approximately 80% of the left mandibular bone. The mass replaced portions of the soft palate, hard palate, sinuses, ear canal, and the caudal-rostral

Imaging of Premalignant Conditions of Bone and Soft Tissue.

Several bone and soft-tissue conditions can transform into malignancy. This carcinogenesis can occur in benign bone and soft-tissue tumors, as well as in tissue injured by radiation, infection, or trauma. These conditions include common tumors and diseases such as osteochondroma, enchondroma, osteomyelitis, and osteonecrosis; however, other entities are more rare. Because many of these conditions are assessed at surveillance imaging, changes in the size and shape of the lesion and the development of aggressive features are often first identified by the radiologist. It is important to be knowle

Progressive craniofacial bone loss after cosmetic surgery at the forehead.

We present the case of a 59-year-old woman with a history of plastic surgery at the forehead who complained of progressive indentations at the frontal skull. CT and MR scans revealed significant bone thinning, presenting as lytic skull lesions, which progressed over a period of 3 years. Biopsies were obtained from the lytic lesions and histology showed fibrotic tissue, synthetic residue of previous cosmetic procedure, and no evidence of infection or neoplasm. Progressive cranial bone resorption places the patient at increased risk for cerebral injury. This case highlights a potential complicat

[Osteoid osteoma and radiofrequency].

Osteoid osteoma and radiofrequency Osteoid osteoma relates to a benign skeletal neoplasm, smaller than 2 cm in diameter, composed of osteoid, highly vascularized connective tissue and surrounded by a ring of bone sclerosis. Its aetiology remains unknown. It affects twice more males than female patients and occurs usually between 5 and 40 years old. Long bones and spine are the most involved areas but the whole skeleton can be involved. Clinical manifestations can include local pain (increased at night and decreased by activity) and relief with salicylates administration. CT guided radiofrequen

Hypertrophic Pulmonary Osteoarthropathy in Pulmonary Metastases.

Hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy is most commonly encountered in association with bronchogenic carcinoma and tumors of the pleura. Its association with pulmonary metastases from extrathoracic neoplasms is rare, with only 44 documented cases in the literature. Three additional cases are reported. Nearly half of the reported cases have been sarcomas, mainly of bone and soft tissues; among the rest are tumors of the nasopharynx and uterus and cervix. It has recently been noted that symptoms can be dramatically relieved by intrathoracic or cervical vagotomy.

[Progressive myositis ossificans: Case report].

BACKGROUND: Myositis ossificans progressiva (MOP) is a low prevalence hereditary connective tissue disease (1:2,000,000 habitants). It is characterized by heterotopic ossification with an uncertain behavior that has been exceptionally related to neoplasms. The objective was to know the coexistence of MOP with neoplasms of mesodermal origin, so that they can be considered in the diagnosis of other patients, as well as formulate hypotheses to clarify their association. CLINICAL CASE: 27-year-old female with right gluteal and ischitiobial muscle pain that increased with exercise, without remissi

Particulate cytoplasmic structures with high concentration of ubiquitin-proteasome accumulate in myeloid neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Increased plasma levels of proteasome have been associated with various neoplasms, especially myeloid malignancies. Little is known of the cellular origin and release mechanisms of such proteasome. We recently identified and characterized a novel particulate cytoplasmic structure (PaCS) showing selective accumulation of ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) components. PaCSs have been reported in some epithelial neoplasms and in two genetic disorders characterized by hematopoietic cell dysplasia and increased risk of leukemia. However, no information is available about PaCSs in hematop

Vertebral Aneurysmal Bone Cyst Mimicking Osteosarcoma: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign osseous lesions containing blood-filled cavities separated by walls of connective tissue. They can be difficult to identify clinically due to similarities in presentation, imaging, and histology with other pathologies. Specifically, it is important to distinguish these benign lesions from malignant processes, as both surgical and medical management differ. We present the case of a 21-year-old patient who presented with impaired motor and sensory function in his lower extremities. Radiologic findings were concerning for an invasive neoplasm, and the intraoperati

B-Cell Lymphoma of Mandible: A Unique Case Report with Diagnostic Perplexity.

Lymphoma in the jaw bone is a rare malignant neoplasm with heterogeneous nature diagnosis of which requires utmost knowledge of cellular morphology and tissue architecture. The lineage of the neoplastic lymphocytes, whether it is B- or T-cell or mixed in nature, is designated by cluster of differentiation numbers. Broad classification of malignant lymphoma includes Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which have various subtypes. An unusual case of a B-cell lymphoma in the mandible in a middle-aged male patient is presented herewith clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features.

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy: A Rare Case Report.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, pigmented tumor. It is a locally aggressive neoplasm of neural crest origin with a high recurrence rate. It occurs in craniofacial sites in more than 90% of cases and most commonly in the maxilla. It may also occur in epididymis, testis, ovaries, soft tissue, and bones of the extremities. It occurs in infants younger than 1 year of age with a slight male preponderance. We report a rare case of a child presenting with midline frontal pigmented MNTI.

[Primary and secondary chest wall tumors from the pathologist's viewpoint].

Fibrous dysplasia (20%), metastases (16%) and chondrosarcoma (11%) are the most common bone tumors of the chest wall. Except lipoma, primary lesions of the soft tissue of the chest occur rarely as well. The Askin- and Abrikosoff tumor, elastofibroma dorsi and desmoid can be seen as typical exceptions. With respect to the histogenetic classification of undifferentiated sarcomas and thoracic metastases (f.e. prostatic carcinomas or mesotheliomas) an intimate cooperation of surgeons and pathologists as well as modern immunohistochemical investigations are required.

A Locally Aggressive Ameloblastic Fibro-Odontoma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a relatively rare, benign noninvasive mixed odontogenic neoplasm derived from epithelial and ectomesenchymal elements of the dental tissues. It usually presents with a mean age of 11.5 years and in the posterior segment of the mandible. It is extremely rare in the posterior maxilla. Although the latest WHO edition classified AFO as developing odontoma, here we present a locally aggressive AFO in a 21-year-old male involving the posterior maxilla and sinus with bone destruction. The patient presents with a two-year history of slowly progressive left facial s

FOXP1 Expression in Normal and Neoplastic Erythroid and Myeloid Cells.

FOXP1 protein was firstly analyzed in normal tissues, and afterwards in different tumor tissues, mainly carcinoma and lymphoma. In B-cell malignancies, its role was well explored; its expression was shown to be connected with disease prognosis in certain B-non Hodgkin lymphomas. In this study, 16 bone marrow trephine samples from patients with no hematopoietic malignancies and 10 samples from peripheral blood of healthy individuals were immunostained with anti-FOXP1 antibody. Positive cells in bone marrows were not only lymphocytes, but also cells that are immunohistochemically positive for gl

Magnetic resonance imaging of musculoskeletal neoplasms.

MRI has been shown to be very useful in the work-up of musculoskeletal neoplasms. The lack of ionizing radiation, the superb contrast resolution, and the ability to directly scan the sagittal and coronal planes make MRI a very attractive imaging mode for treatment planning. With spin-echo MRI, maximum contrast between tumor and fatty tissues generally occurs with short TR and TE times (T1-weighted images). Likewise, maximum contrast between tumor and muscle, tendon, or ligaments occurs with long values of TR and TE (T2-weighted images). Early experience suggests that the already exceptional co

Solitary fibrous tumor: an updated review.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a fibroblastic neoplasm characterized by a branching, thin-walled dilated staghorn-shaped (hemangiopericytoma-like) vasculature and a NAB2::STAT6 gene fusion. SFTs can occur in almost any anatomical location, including superficial and deep soft tissues, visceral organs, and bone. They most commonly occur in extrapleural locations, equally affect both sexes, and are typically present in adults. Although metastasis is rare, SFTs frequently show local recurrence. The diagnosis of SFTs is difficult because of their broad histological and morphological overlap with o

Case Report: Intracranial epidermoid cyst accompanied by bone hyperplasia forming a bone encapsulation.

Intracranial epidermoid cysts are not true neoplasms; rather, they represent congenital benign lesions characterized by the presence of stratified squamous epithelium, commonly referred to as pearl tumors or cholesteatomas. These cysts exhibit slow growth within the cranial cavity, primarily manifesting as compressive changes and rarely inducing adjacent hyperostosis. Of particular note, the bone encapsulation phenomenon with distinct morphological features, resulting from hyperostosis, is extremely rare, with hardly any similar cases reported in the existing literature. This report provides a

[Bone marrow biopsy: processing and use of molecular techniques].

The rapid technological development in diagnostic pathology, especially of immunohistochemical and molecular techniques, also has a significant impact on diagnostic procedures for the evaluation of bone marrow trephine biopsies. The necessity for optimal morphology, combined with preservation of tissue antigens and nucleic acids on one hand and the wish for short turnaround times on the other hand require careful planning of the workflow for fixation, decalcification and embedding of trephines. Although any kind of bone marrow processing has its advantages and disadvantages, formalin fixation

Bone marrow biopsy: interpretive guidelines for the surgical pathologist.

Ideally, the bone marrow core biopsy should be reviewed with knowledge of the clinical history, complete blood count, and findings in the peripheral blood and bone marrow aspirate smears. However, for a variety of reasons, the pathologist may receive the core biopsy and aspirate clot section without all of this information. Although this approach is not optimal, a great deal of valuable information can be generated from these specimens. Over the past 20 years, there has been considerable progress in the fields of flow cytometric analysis, immunohistochemistry, and molecular diagnostic studies
