Breast Cancer in a Pectoralis Major Myocutaneous Flap Used for the Reconstruction of Tongue Cancer: A Case Report.

Breast cancers are the most common cancers in women. However, breast cancer occurring in a pectoralis major myocutaneous flap is extremely rare. This article describes a case of breast cancer occurring in such a flap used for reconstruction of the tongue in a 72-year-old woman. Follow-up computed tomogram depicted a slowly growing mass in the flap. Thirty-nine months postoperatively, a fine-needle aspiration biopsy specimen taken from the lesion suggested glandular carcinoma. The patient was diagnosed with breast cancer in the neck area of the flap and tumor excision was performed. Histologic

Extragonadal malignant teratoma of the foot.

This report documents the occurrence of an extragonadal malignant teratoma on the sole of the foot, in a young male. The patient also developed a groin nodule showing the same histology. The testes, retroperitoneum and mediastinum, which are usual sites of germ cell tumours were all normal, and no other primary could be detected. A teratoma growing in the tip of an extremity is a unique occurrence, biologically difficult to explain, and, which to the best of our knowledge has never been reported in literature.

Coexistence of medullary thyroid carcinoma and recurrent non-functional pituitary adenoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Medullary thyroid carcinoma and pituitary adenoma are neuroendocrine tumors and their coexistence has not been reported in the literature, previously. Medullary thyroid carcinoma is a neoplasm of the thyroid gland arising from parafollicular c-cells producing calcitonin, and pituitary adenoma is a benign hyperplasia of the cells of the pituitary gland. Coexistence of these neoplasms can be explained by being affected by simultaneous primary neoplasms or tumor-to-tumor metastasis phenomenon. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 60-year-old Persian man who presented to the cl

[Frequency and distribution pattern of distant metastases in patients with ENT tumors and their consequences for pretherapeutic staging].

PURPOSE: To address the following questions: which parameters influenced the frequency of distant metastases in patients with locally advanced ear-nose-throat (ENT) tumors, which was the distribution pattern of metastases, and what were the diagnostic consequences for pretherapeutic staging? PATIENTS AND METHODS: 600 patients (526 men, 76 women, median age 56 years) with ENT tumors (squamous cell carcinoma histology) were studied retrospectively. The distribution of primary tumor site and stage (AJCC) was as follows: oropharynx: n = 161 (26.8%), hypopharynx: n = 187 (31.2%), oral cavity: n =

Immunohistochemistry in the Diagnosis of Mucinous Neoplasms Involving the Ovary: The Added Value of SATB2 and Biomarker Discovery Through Protein Expression Database Mining.

Immunohistochemistry is frequently used to identify ovarian mucinous neoplasms as primary or metastatic; however, there is significant overlap in expression patterns. We compared traditional markers (CK7, CK20, CDX2, PAX8, estrogen receptor, β-catenin, MUC1, MUC2, and MUC5AC) to 2 novel proteins identified through mining of the Human Protein Atlas expression database: SATB2 and POF1B. The study cohort included 49 primary gastrointestinal (GI) mucinous adenocarcinomas (19 colorectal, 15 gastric, 15 pancreatobiliary), 60 primary ovarian mucinous neoplasms (19 cystadenomas, 21 borderline tumors,

Multiple primary malignant neoplasms of the glottis, renal pelvis, urinary bladder, oral floor, prostate, and esophagus in a Japanese male patient: a case report.

Owing to recent advances in diagnostic and surgical techniques for cancer, a patient diagnosed with two or more neoplasms is not rare. We report on the case of a 58-year-old male with multiple primary malignant neoplasms, who suffered from three histological types of malignant neoplasm in six organs, namely the glottis, renal pelvis, urinary bladder, oral floor, prostate, and esophagus in chronological order. The first neoplasm was a squamous cell carcinoma of the glottis diagnosed in 2006. The second and third neoplasms were urothelial carcinomas of the right renal pelvis and urinary bladder,

Other primary neoplasms in patients with hepatocellular cancer: prognostic implications?

PURPOSE: Little is known about other primary neoplasms occurring in patients with hepatocellular cancer (HCC). This team attempted to characterize this cohort of patients to define incidence, risk factors, natural history, and potentially shared etiologies. METHODS: A retrospective analysis from an established, prospective database of patients with HCC during 1991-2004 was used to determine demographic data, risk factors, characteristics of the associated second primary neoplasm, and survival. MAIN FINDINGS: Of 306 patients with HCC, 23 patients (7.5%) were identified with a second neoplasm.

[Multiple cerebral glioma or tumor dissemination via CSF pathways? Case report].

A case is presented of a 38-year-old female patient who developed bifocal metachronous cerebral glioma with the same histological appearance (glioblastoma multiforme). Two separate tumors were operated on within six months: the first one was localized in the left parieto-occipital area, and the other in the right temporal lobe. The tumor cells dissemination occurred probably via the CSF pathways: during the first operation the posterior horn of the left lateral ventricle was opened, and the second neoplastic lesion was situated also in the direct vicinity of CSF spaces (the Sylvian cistern). Two cases of primary hepatic neoplasia in young horses: Diagnostic challenges and clinical implications.

Primary hepatic neoplasms are rare in horses and often have a poor prognosis due to non-specific clinical signs and delayed diagnosis. This report describes two cases of primary hepatic neoplasia in young horses. The first case was a yearling Hanoverian filly presenting with non-specific clinical signs, including poor weight gain and inappetence, ultimately diagnosed with hepatoblastoma based on ultrasonographic findings and histopathological examination. The second case was a three-year-old Polish Sport Horse stallion that died suddenly, with post-mortem examination revealing advanced cholang

Eruptive disseminated Spitz nevi.

BACKGROUND: The solitary form of Spitz nevus is a common clinical entity in children, typically occurring on the face and extremities. However, less frequent variants of Spitz nevi, such as agminated forms and eruptive disseminated Spitz nevi (EDSN), have been described. The agminated form is characterised by localised clusters or segmental distribution of Spitz nevi on the face, back, or extremities. First described as "eruptive juvenile melanomata", EDSN is the rarest clinical variant, consisting of a widespread eruption of Spitz nevi, most frequently involving the trunk, buttocks, and proxi

Synchronous and Metachronous Malignancies After Malignant Struma Ovarii in the SEER Database.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Second primary tumors (SPTs) often occur, either synchronous or metachronous. Struma ovarii is a rare ovarian tumor represented by thyroid tissue in the ovary. Among other factors, production of thyroid hormones by the tumor or a shared genetic predisposition can further influence the development of SPTs. The occurrence of SPT, either synchronous or metachronous, following a long follow-up, has never been considered extensively. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 1973 to 2011 to follow-up all the cases of mali

Nine primary malignant neoplasms-involving the esophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, prostate, and external ear canal-without microsatellite instability: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Although cases of multiple primary malignant neoplasms are increasing, reports of more than three or four primary metachronous malignant neoplasms are extremely rare. Moreover, very few publications have provided a genetic mutational analysis or have evaluated risk factors associated with such neoplasms. We present an extremely rare case of nine primary malignant lesions in a man who was successfully treated. We also report on microsatellite stability status, analyze risk factors, and discuss the relevant literature. CASE PRESENTATION: Between 67 and 73 years of age, a male patien

[About a case of primary laryngeal mucosal melanoma in a patient with medical history of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma].

INTRODUCTION: Primary laryngeal mucosal melanoma is a rare tumour with a poor prognosis. Its often difficult diagnosis should rule out laryngeal metastatic localization of cutaneous melanoma. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of primary laryngeal mucosal melanoma diagnosed in a 65-year-old man, treated 6 years previously with radio-chemotherapy and surgery for squamous cell carcinoma of the right lateral oropharyngeal region. The definitive diagnosis of primary laryngeal mucosal melanoma was made on the resection specimen, whereas the initial biopsy of the epilaryngeal mass discovered durin

Predicting clinical outcome in patients diagnosed with synchronous ovarian and endometrial cancer.

PURPOSE: Patients with synchronous ovarian and endometrial cancers may represent cases of a single primary tumor with metastasis (SPM) or dual primary tumors (DP). The diagnosis given will influence the patient's treatment and prognosis. Currently, a diagnosis of SPM or DP is made using histologic criteria, which are frequently unable to make a definitive diagnosis. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: In this study, we used genetic profiling to make a genetic diagnosis of SPM or DP in 90 patients with synchronous ovarian/endometrial cancers. We compared genetic diagnoses in these patients with the original

Solitary fibrous tumour of the larynx: report of a case.

Solitary fibrous tumour is a particular kind of mesenchymal tumour, classically arising in the pleura. We report the first case arising in the larynx, associated with a metastasizing adenocarcinoma. The diagnosis is mainly histopathological, especially when strong immunoreactivity for the CD34 antibody is present.
