Secretion of a gastrointestinal hormone, cholecystokinin, by hop-derived bitter components activates sympathetic nerves in brown adipose tissue.

Matured hop bitter acids (MHBA) are oxidation products from bitter components in hops, which are used widely as food materials to add flavor and bitterness in beer production. Our previous study has shown that MHBA induces thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT) via sympathetic nerves in rodents and reduces body fat in healthy adults. However, it is unclear how MHBA affects the sympathetic nervous system. In this study, we demonstrate that MHBA treatment of enteroendocrine cells increases Ca2+ levels and induces the secretion of the gastrointestinal hormone, cholecystokinin (CCK), in a dos

Cupping in the Monkey Optic Nerve Transection Model Consists of Prelaminar Tissue Thinning in the Absence of Posterior Laminar Deformation.

PURPOSE: To use optical coherence tomography (OCT) to test the hypothesis that optic nerve head (ONH) "cupping" in the monkey optic nerve transection (ONT) model does not include posterior laminar deformation. METHODS: Five monkeys (aged 5.5-7.8 years) underwent ONH and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) OCT imaging five times at baseline and biweekly following unilateral ONT until euthanization at ∼40% RNFL loss. Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) and minimum rim width (MRW) were calculated from each pre- and post-ONT imaging session. The anterior lamina cribrosa surface (ALCS) was de

The effect of time after shear injury on the subsynovial connective tissue and median nerve within the rabbit carpal tunnel.

Patterns of durational variation can offer rich phonetic cues to word structure, such as the number of syllables a word contains, or its morphological structure. In this study, we examine two types of durational cues: direct phonetic cues, which reflect phonological features, such as syllable count, and ancillary morphophonetic cues, which reflect phonological features triggered by morphological processes, such as suffixation. For direct phonetic cues, we focus on polysyllabic shortening, a pattern by which adding additional syllables to a stem (e.g., cart → carton) will shorten the duration o

Clinical and electrophysiological comparison of different methods of soft tissue coverage of the median nerve in recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical and electrophysiological results of 26 patients treated with either a hypothenar fat flap or a synovial flap to prevent recurrent scar compression of the median nerve after previously failed carpal tunnel decompression. METHODS: A total of 26 patients underwent flap coverage as a result of a nerve tethering attributable to a position within scar; 15 were covered by a synovial flap and 11 by a hypothenar fat flap. Only patients in whom the median nerve was significantly enveloped in scar tissue were included. All candidates underwent a thorough clinical exam

The dissemination of rabies virus into cranial nerves and other tissues of experimentally infected goats and dogs and naturally infected skunks.

Immunofluorescence examination for rabies virus antigen performed on skin specimens acquired from experimentally inoculated rabid goats and some dogs, often show little or not fluorescence. This observation is contrary to results obtained by comparable examination of the skin of naturally infected animals and most experimentally infected dogs. In an effort to elucidate some factors associated with this experience, an experiment was performed to similarly examine the cranial nerves to see if the limited amounts of fluorescing antigen observed in the skin were also found there. Direct immunofluo

Deep learning method for semi-automated segmentation of optic nerve head tissues in optical coherence tomography images.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables acquisition of image volumes of the optic nerve head (ONH) in vivo. These image volumes provide structural and biomechanical information about the ONH. The individual tissues in these images must be segmented to obtain tissue-specific information, but doing so manually is time consuming. We present a method which uses a deep learning model to semi-automatically segment the following tissue boundaries of the ONH: the anterior lamina cribrosa surface (ALCS), Bruch's membrane (BM), and choroid-scleral interface (CS). We trained a convolutional neural net

Histological study of the thin membranous dense connective tissues around the curving portion of the bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerves.

OBJECTIVE/AIM: We aimed to demonstrate the anatomical relationship between the recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLNs), thin membranous dense connective tissue (TMDCT [e.g., the visceral or vascular sheaths around the esophagus]), and the lymph nodes around the esophagus at the curving portion of the RLNs for rational and efficient lymph node dissection. METHODS: Transverse sections of the mediastinum at 5 mm or 1 mm intervals were obtained from four cadavers. Hematoxylin and eosin staining and Elastica van Gieson staining were performed. RESULTS: The visceral sheaths could not be clearly observed

The histomorphological and stereological assessment of rat dorsal root ganglion tissues after various types of sciatic nerve injury.

Peripheral nerve injuries lead to significant changes in the dorsal root ganglia, where the cell bodies of the damaged axons are located. The sensory neurons and the surrounding satellite cells rearrange the composition of the intracellular organelles to enhance their plasticity for adaptation to changing conditions and response to injury. Meanwhile, satellite cells acquire phagocytic properties and work with macrophages to eliminate degenerated neurons. These structural and functional changes are not identical in all injury types. Understanding the cellular response, which varies according to

Utilizing RNA-Seq to Identify Differentially Expressed Genes in Glaucoma Model Tissues, Such as the Rodent Optic Nerve Head.

Understanding the cellular pathways activated by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is crucial for the development of more effective glaucoma treatments. Microarray studies have previously been used to identify several key gene expression changes in early and extensively injured ONH, as well as in the retina. Limitations of microarrays include that they can only be used to detect transcripts that correspond to existing genomic sequencing information and their narrower dynamic range. However, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) is a powerful tool for investigating known transcripts, as well as for explor

[Changes in the skin and sciatic nerve after soft-tissue damage to the extremity by a high-speed small-caliber bullet].

The character of contusive changes has been determined in the skin and sciatic nerve after lesion of soft tissues of the extremity with a high-speed small-bore bullet. A high-speed filming, tensiometry have been used. They allow to observe and measure processes of formation of the temporal pulsating cavity appearing at the moment of injury in the block of 20% gelatin and its influence on the imitator of the vascular-neural bundle. In the investigation performed on test-animals by means of neuromorphological, histological and histochemical techniques certain contusive changes are stated in the

Simultaneous histochemical demonstration of noradrenergic nerves and tissue components in guinea-pig renal pelvis after treatment with daunomycin.

A standard histochemical technique for detecting catecholamines has been applied to tissues from the renal pelvis of untreated and daunomycin-pretreated guinea-pigs. Under the fluorescence microscope, muscular, mucosal, and endothelial cells exhibited the drug-specific orange-red fluorescence, in contrast to the dark background of control tissues. The presence of daunomycin in the cells also greatly improved the visibility of numerous noradrenergic fibres which appeared to originate from perivascular plexuses and distribute to the smooth cells. A dense noradrenergic innervation was detected in

Relationship between Corvis ST tonometry parameters and mean blur rate in the optic nerve head tissue area in healthy eyes.

This study investigated the relationship between Corvis ST tonometry parameters and mean blur rate in the optic nerve head tissue area (MBR-T) in healthy eyes. Corneal biomechanical properties and MBR-T were measured in 100 eyes from 56 healthy participants in Japan using Corvis ST tonometry and laser speckle flowgraphy, respectively. Axial length, central corneal thickness, and intraocular pressure were also recorded. Linear mixed-effects models were applied to evaluate the associations between corneal biomechanical properties and MBR-T. Model selection was performed using the second-order bi
