BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury in newborn infants represents a major cause of cerebral palsy, development delay, and epilepsy. Stem cell-based therapy has the potential to rescue and replace the ischemic tissue caused by HI and to restore function. However, the mechanisms by which stem cell transplants induce functional recovery are yet to be elucidated. In the present study, we sought to investigate the efficacy of human neural stem cells derived from human embryonic stem cells in a rat model of neonatal HI and the mechanisms enhancing brain repair.

Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) of cardiac and neural crest origin contribute to the developing proximal aorta and are linked to disease propensity in adults. We analyzed single-cell transcriptomes of SMCs from mature thoracic aortas in mice to determine basal states and changes after disrupting transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) signaling necessary for aortic homeostasis. A minority of Myh11 lineage-marked SMCs differentially expressed genes suggestive of embryological origin. Additional analyses in Nkx2-5 and Wnt1 lineage-marked SMCs derived from cardiac and neural crest progenitors, respectivel

OBJECTIVE: Pathological tremors are symptomatic to several neurological disorders that are difficult to differentiate and the way by which central oscillatory networks entrain tremorogenic contractions is unknown. We considered the alternative hypotheses that tremor arises from one oscillator (at the tremor frequency) or, as suggested by recent findings from the superimposition of two separate inputs (at the tremor frequency and twice that frequency).
APPROACH: Assuming one central oscillatory network we estimated analytically the relative amplitude of the harmonics of the tremor frequency in

After a stroke, abnormal changes in neural oscillations that are related to the severity and prognosis of the disease can occur. Resetting these abnormal neural oscillations is a potential approach for stroke rehabilitation. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can modulate intrinsic neural oscillations noninvasively and has attracted attention as a possible technique to improve multiple post-stroke symptoms, including deficits in speech, vision, and motor ability and overall neurological recovery. The clinical effect of tACS varies according to the selected frequency. Therefore

Spiking Neural Network (SNN) has been recognized as the third generation of neural networks. Conventionally, a SNN can be converted from a pre-trained Artificial Neural Network (ANN) with less computation and memory than training from scratch. But, these converted SNNs are vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the SNN trained by optimizing the loss function will be more adversarial robust, but the theoretical analysis for the mechanism of robustness is lacking. In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation by analyzing the expected risk function. Start

Electroencephalography (EEG) correlates of olfaction are of fundamental and practical interest for many reasons. In the field of neural technologies, olfactory-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) represent an approach that could be useful for neurorehabilitation of anosmia, dysosmia and hyposmia. While the idea of a BCI that decodes neural responses to different odors and/or enables odor-based neurofeedback is appealing, the results of previous EEG investigations into the olfactory domain are rather inconsistent, particularly when non-primary processing of olfactory signals is concerned. Knowledge of the structural properties of biological neural networks can help in understanding how particular responses and actions are generated. Recently, Witvliet et al. published the connectomes of eight isogenic Caenorhabditis elegans hermaphrodites at different postembryonic ages, from birth to adulthood. We analyzed the basic structural properties of these biological neural networks. From birth to adulthood, the asymmetry between in-degrees and out-degrees over the C. elegans neuronal network increased with age, in addition to an increase in the number of nodes and edges. The degree dis

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to discriminate the dynamic synchronization states from the subthalamic local field potentials and investigate their correlations with the motor symptoms in Parkinson's Disease (PD).
METHODS: The resting-state local field potentials of 10 patients with PD were recorded from the subthalamic nucleus. The dynamic neural states of multiple oscillations were discriminated and analyzed. The Spearman correlation was used to investigate the correlations between occurrence rate or duration of dynamic neural states and the severity of motor symptoms.
RESULTS: The proportion

Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by fatal motoric failures induced by loss of striatal medium spiny neurons. Neuronal cell death has been linked to impaired expression and axonal transport of the neurotrophin BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor). By transplanting embryonic stem cell-derived neural progenitors overexpressing BDNF, we combined cell replacement and BDNF supply as a potential HD therapy approach. Transplantation of purified neural progenitors was analyzed in a quinolinic acid (QA) chemical and two genetic HD mouse models (R6/2 and N171-82Q) on the basis of distinct b

BACKGROUND: Disorders of gaze-holding--organized by a neural network located in the brainstem or the cerebellum--may lead to nystagmus. Based on previous animal studies it was concluded that one key player of the cerebellar part of this gaze-holding neural network is the flocculus. Up to now, in humans there are no systematic studies in patients with cerebellar lesions examining one of the most common forms of nystagmus: gaze-evoked nystagmus (GEN). The aim of our present study was to clarify which cerebellar structures are involved in the generation of GEN.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients with

Dementia typically results from damage to neural pathways and the consequent degeneration of neuronal connections. Graph neural networks (GNNs) have been widely employed to model complex brain networks. However, leveraging the complementary temporal, spatial, and spectral features for diagnosing neurocognitive disorders remains challenging. To address this issue, we propose a Bi-path Multi-scale Graph Neural Network (Bi-MCGNN), which integrates two paths : one focusing on time and spatial relationships, and the other on spatial and frequency patterns. By unifying these pathways, Bi-MCGNN integ

Deep learning is good at extracting the required feature quantity from the massive input information through multiple hidden layers and completing the learning through training to achieve the task of load forecasting. The impulse power load data contain a lot of noise, burrs, and strong randomness. As an improved recurrent neural networks, the output of long short-term memory (LSTM) network is not only related to the current input, but also closely related to the historical information, which can effectively predict the impact power load. An impulse power load forecasting model based on improv
