The effects of equinatoxin II on respiration--possible mechanism of the toxin lethality.

In rat an intravenous application (i.v.) of a lethal dose of the equinatoxin II (EqT II) provoked a respiratory arrest. It is not known whether the respiratory arrest is a result of a direct actions of the toxin on lung tissue, on neuromuscular junctions or the on the central nervous system. The influences of the toxin on the neuromuscular transmission and on muscular contraction were studied in isolated rat diaphragm. The effect of EqT II on end plate potentials of m. cutaneus pectoris was measured in the frog Rana esculenta. To monitor equinatoxin II effects on the central nervous system of

Optimizing ischemic preconditioning for esophagogastric anastomosis: A standardized rat model to evaluate histological changes.

BACKGROUND: Electromyography has advantages over mechanomyography and acceleromyography. Previously, agreement of the train-of-four counts between acceleromyography and electromyography was found to be fair. The objective of this study was to assess the agreement of posttetanic count including agreement of neuromuscular blockade status (intense block, posttetanic count equal to 0; or deep block, posttetanic count 1 or greater and train-of-four count equal to 0) between acceleromyography and electromyography. METHODS: Thirty-six patients, aged 20 to 65 yr, participated in this study. A dose of

[Clinical Investigation of Key Parameter Range of AMG Muscle Relaxant Monitor].

The accelerometry(AMG) muscle relaxant monitor is the most widely used quantitative muscle relaxant monitor to assess the degree of neuromuscular at present. In this study, the ulnar nerve was stimulated by using train of four stimulation(TOF) mode of the AMG muscle relaxant monitor, and the movement of the adductor pollicis muscle was monitored. In this way, the distribution range of key parameters (acceleration peak value, response time, and TOF ratio) of the adductor pollicis muscle during the use of muscle relaxant in clinical practice is analyzed and will provide a practical basis for the

Neuromuscular Complications of SARS-CoV-2 and Other Viral Infections.

In this article we review complications to the peripheral nervous system that occur as a consequence of viral infections, with a special focus on complications of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). We discuss neuromuscular complications in three broad categories; the direct consequences of viral infection, autoimmune neuromuscular disorders provoked by viral infections, and chronic neurodegenerative conditions which have been associated with viral infections. We also include discussion of neuromuscular disorders that are treated by immunomodulatory therapies, and how

Intraoperative Monitoring: Recent Advances in Motor Evoked Potentials.

Advances in electrophysiological monitoring have improved the ability of surgeons to make decisions and minimize the risks of complications during surgery and interventional procedures when the central nervous system (CNS) is at risk. Individual techniques have become important for identifying or mapping the location and pathway of critical neural structures. These techniques are also used to monitor the progress of procedures to augment surgical and physiologic management so as to reduce the risk of CNS injury. Advances in motor evoked potentials have facilitated mapping and monitoring of the

Patients with symptoms of delayed gastric emptying have a high prevalence of oesophageal dysmotility, irrespective of scintigraphic evidence of gastroparesis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with symptoms suggestive of gastroparesis exhibit several symptoms, such as epigastric pain, postprandial fullness, bloating and regurgitation. It is uncertain if such symptoms reflect underlying oesophageal motor disorder. AIMS: To examine whether patients with epigastric pain and postprandial distress syndrome suggestive of functional dyspepsia and/or gastroparesis also have concomitant oesophageal motility abnormalities and, if so, whether there are any associations between these disturbances. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, consecutive patients with func

Incorporation of vesicular antigens into the presynaptic membrane during exocytosis at the frog neuromuscular junction: a light and electron microscopy immunochemical study.

We have studied the incorporation of vesicular membrane antigens into the presynaptic membrane during exocytosis of neurotransmitter at the frog neuromuscular junction. In a preliminary series of experiments, we first confirmed by electron microscopy that the synaptic vesicles are labelled following incubation with rabbit antisynaptic vesicle antibody of neuromuscular junction cross sections (cytoplasm and organelles reached by the antibodies). In a second series of experiments, intact neuromuscular junctions were stimulated with black widow spider venom and fixed with paraformaldehyde. The pr

Accidental Awareness During General Anesthesia in an Anesthetist: A Patient-Clinician Perspective.

Accidental awareness during general anesthesia is multifactorial and may occur despite apparently stable physiological parameters and in the absence of neuromuscular blockade. Reliance on clinical signs alone may be insufficient to assess hypnotic depth, highlighting the importance of appropriate monitoring, vigilance, and structured postoperative assessment.

Physiological Modeling of Concentration-Effect Relationship for Nondepolarizing Neuromuscular Blocking Drugs.

This paper reports modeling of physiological processes of neuromuscular transmission considering effects of nondepolarizing neuromuscualr blocking drugs (NDNBs) used during general anesthesia. NDNBs are considered to act by interacting with acetylcohine receptors located at pre- and post-junctional sites. This paper proposes an extension of the standard model of synaptic depression used in the field of neuroscience to describe the pre-junctional effect of NDNBs. The extended model is then combined with a previously proposed model of the post-junctional effect to simulate the whole process of n
