Anillin (Ani) is an evolutionarily conserved protein with a multi-domain structure that cross-links cytoskeletal proteins and plays an essential role in the formation of the contractile ring during cytokinesis. However, Ani is highly expressed in the human central nervous system (CNS), and it scaffolds myelin in the CNS of mice and modulates neuronal migration and growth in Caenorhabditis elegans. Although Ani is also highly expressed in the Drosophila CNS, its role remains unclear. In the present study, we showed that Ani is not only highly expressed in larval neuroblasts of the CNS, but also

A free-ranging juvenile male black bear (Ursus americanus), found dead in Alberta, Canada, had severe nonsuppurative encephalitis. Lesions in the brain were most severe in the gray matter of the cerebral cortex, and included perivascular cuffs of lymphocytes and plasma cells, areas of gliosis that disrupted the neuropil, and intralesional protozoan schizonts. The left hindlimb had suppurative myositis associated with Streptococcus halichoeri. Immunohistochemistry and molecular analyses (PCR and sequencing of 4 discriminatory loci: 18S rDNA, ITS-1 rDNA, cox1, rpoB) identified Sarcocystis canis

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a very rare, progressive neurodegenerative disorder that is incurable and always fatal. It is one of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies caused by prions. Multiple vacuoles in neuropil and neuronal loss in the gray matter gives the classical sponge-like appearance of brain and are responsible for the typical clinical symptoms. In this report, we present 4 cases referred to the neurology department of Uludağ University with neurological symptoms. Patients were evaluated with electroencephalogram and magnetic resonance imaging, and performed brain biopsies

Regulation of microtubule dynamics is crucial for axon growth and guidance as well as for the establishment of synaptic connections. STOPs (Stable Tubule Only Polypeptides) are microtubule-associated proteins that regulate microtubule stabilization but are also able to interact with actin or Golgi membranes. Here, we have investigated the involvement of STOPs during the development of the olfactory system. We first describe the spatio-temporal expression patterns of N- and E-STOP, the two neuronal-specific isoforms of STOP. E- and N-STOP are expressed in the axonal compartment of olfactory sen

Five cases of scrapie with unusual features have been diagnosed in Norway since 1998. The affected sheep showed neurological signs dominated by ataxia, and had the PrP genotypes homozygous A136 H154 Q171/ A136H154Q171 or heterozygous A136H154Q171/A136R154Q171, which are rarely associated with scrapie. Brain histopathology revealed neuropil vacuolisation essentially in the cerebellar and cerebral cortices; vacuolation was less prominent in the brainstem, and no lesions were observed at the level of the obex. The deposits of PrPSc were mainly in the cortex of the cerebellum and cerebrum, and no

A 3-year-old boy with segmental vitiligo, poliosis, and alopecia over the right side of the scalp developed epilepsia partialis continua involving the left side of the body and progressive atrophy of the right cerebral hemisphere. There was a right ear dysacusia and a perilimbal vitiligo associated with an area of iris depigmentation in the right eye. Pleocytosis and hypergammaglobulin were detected in cerebrospinal fluid. Because medical treatment that included phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, benzodiazepines, corticosteroids, gamma-globulin, and a ketogenic diet was in

We have studied Gallyas- and tau-positive glial structures in three autopsied cases of motor neuron disease with dementia (MND-D). Gallyas-positive, tau-immunoreactive thread-like structures in the neuropil and crescent/coiled inclusions in the glial cells were mainly observed in the hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, and amygdaloid nucleus. Double staining using Gallyas staining and carbonic anhydrase 2 (CA2) immunohistochemistry revealed that some crescent/coiled inclusions occurred in the CA2-immunopositive cytoplasm of the oligodendroglia. Electron microscopic study with the Gallyas-Braak

Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) was induced in adult Lewis rats with purified guinea pig CNS myelin and Freund's adjuvant. As soon as the very earliest clinical signs appeared the animals were perfused with fixatives and the spinal cord analyzed by electron microscopy, silver methods, and immunocytochemistry. Our findings suggest that in the early stages of EAE a sequence of events can be traced, although these events frequently overlap. The earliest morphological change appears to be astrocytic edema in both the cell body and processes. Increased amounts of glycogen particles an

A 3-month-old infant with congenital hypotonia suffering from an unusual form of glycogenosis is reported. The most striking neuropathologic findings were vacuolation of neuropile and glycogen accumulation, especially in the cerebral cortex and cerebellar molecular layer. Ultrastructurally, glycogen accumulation was present mainly in neurites and astrocytic processes, and mostly appeared as rosettes (alpha glycogen particles). Biochemical analysis of glycogen in various regions of the central nervous system showed an increase of up to 100-fold. The cerebral cortex, deep nuclei, and cerebellar

Gerbils exhibit a unique encephalopathy characterized by spongioform lesions in the neuropil of the cochlear nucleus and that others have recently described. The present results suggest that the course of this degenerative disorder is affected by acoustic experience. In gerbils in which acoustic stimulation was limited postnatally, the number and the extent of these lesions was dramatically reduced. Monaural deprivation reduced lesion number and extent only in the ipsilateral cochlear nucleus; binaural deprivation affected both cochlear nuclei. The lesions were most evident in certain portions

Light and electron microscopic findings of spongy state in four species of small rodents, viz, mice, rats, Mongolian gerbils, and guinea pigs, are described. The spongy state existed in both gray and white matter; its intensity varied in each species, and in the gray matter corresponded to vacuoles within the neuropil. They were of two types; one was the true vacuoles within neurites, and the other was markedly swollen cell processes, some of which were also identified as neurites. In the white matter, the spongy state corresponded mainly to distension of the myelin sheaths, due to splitting o

The filum terminale, or terminal portion of the spinal cord, was studied in normal adult frogs (Rana pipiens) bu means of light and electron microscopy. Astroglial cells are the predominant elements in this region. The rostral portion of the filum terminale consists mainly of (1) a peripheral dense ring of myelinated and some unmyelinated nerve fibers, and processes of astrobytes terminating at the subpial space; (2) an intermediate zone, in which astrocytes are the main cellular elements in addition to a few degenerated neurons; and (3) a central region where the central canal is lined by dar

A cortical biopsy was taken at the time when ventricular pressure was measured, or a ventriculo-atrial shunt placed, in 11 patients with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (N.P.H.), and was studied with the electron microscope. In 9 cases, a rather typical electron microscopic picture with marked increase of extracellular space in an otherwise normal cortical neuropil was observed. 2 patients did not exhibit this pattern and, coincendentally, did not benefit from the placing of the shunt. As a control, about 600 cortical biopsies that had been taken for other reasons were reviewed. In the group, th

Background Cadmium (Cd) is one of the toxic metals found naturally in the environment and is used in industrial settings. In uncontaminated soils and freshwater, its levels are generally low. However, industrial activities, mining, phosphate fertilizers, and waste disposal can markedly increase environmental Cd concentrations, leading to chronic exposure in humans and animals. Exposure to high levels of Cd may induce harmful effects on nervous tissue. Experimental studies have demonstrated that Cd accumulates in various brain regions, including the olfactory bulb, after crossing the blood-brai

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric autoimmune encephalitis (pAE) is a growing field of interest in diagnosis and therapy in psychiatric hospitals and institutions. This study investigates the relevant extent to which there are potential biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that can differentiate against a cohort with neurodegenerative disease.
METHODS: We included in this study a total of 27 patients with possible and definite psychiatric autoimmune encephalitis and compared with a cohort with CSF-based AD (n = 27) different biomarkers in CSF such as lactate, cell count, % lymphocytes, % monocytes, t

The aim of the present study was to describe in detail the ultrastructure of intrinsic cardiac ganglionic cells in the healthy human as these cells appear to be directly involved in the development of tachycardia, atrioventricular block, ventricular fibrillation, and sudden cardiac death. Tissues examined in this study were obtained from hearts of 10 adult humans of either sex aged 22-80 years at autopsy performed no more than 8 h after death. The examined human intrinsic cardiac nerve cells were in most respects typical autonomic neurons surrounded by a sheath of satellite cells that was eith

Infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the global COVID-19 pandemic, causes a respiratory illness that can severely impact other organ systems and is possibly precipitated by cytokine storm, septic shock, thrombosis, and oxidative stress. SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals may be asymptomatic or may experience mild, moderate, or severe symptoms with or without pneumonia. The mechanisms by which SARS-CoV-2 infects humans are largely unknown. Mouse hepatitis virus 1 (MHV-1)-induced infection was used as a highly relevant surrogate animal model for this study. We further characterized

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pleiotropic cytokine that is produced by many cell types in situations of homeostasis or disease. One of its functions is to act as a proinflammatory molecule. In humans, several studies have shown that MIF levels become elevated in the serum, urine, cerebrospinal fluid and tissues of patients with chronic inflammatory diseases (systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, sepsis, atheromas, diabetes and cancer). In dogs, distemper is a viral infectious condition that may lead to demyelination and inflammation in the

INTRODUCTION: Peripheric nerve hyperexcitability (PNH) syndromes are a rare, heterogenous group of diseases characterized by continuous muscle overactivity due to spontaneous discharges of the lower motor neurons.
CASE SERIES: Here we report four patients presented with painful cramps, generalized muscle twitches and lower extremity weakness. All patients had evidence of neuropathy and neuromyotonic discharges on electrodiagnostic studies. Screening for a broad panel of anti-neuronal antibodies proved uncharacterized neuropil antibodies in one patient. Despite extensive serologic and genetic

Gangliocytoma of the pituitary gland is a rare lesion that often occurs in combination with pituitary adenomas and the exact origin is the subject of discussion. We report a rare case of an intrasellar mass of combined gangliocytoma/ pituitary adenoma coexistent with Rathke's cleft cyst. A 50-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with headache, mild acromegaly, and bitemporal hemianopsia. Histologically the tumor was composed of triphasic component of pituitary adenoma, clusters of ganglion cells and small cysts embedded in a variably dense neuropil substrate. Immunohistochemical analys
