PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of an oral contraceptive (OC) on bone mineral density (BMD) in adolescent females with anorexia nervosa (AN) or eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS).
METHODS: Females 11-17 years of age with AN or EDNOS entered the study. Subjects were randomized equally to treatment with a triphasic OC containing norgestimate (NGM) 180-250 microg and ethinyl estradiol (EE) 35 microg or placebo for 13 28-day cycles. Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry scans (DXA) of the lumbosacral spine (LS) and hip were obtained at baseline and after 6 and 13 cycles.

We present the case history of a 22-yr-old woman diagnosed with ischemic colitis associated with the use of oral contraceptives (OC). At the time of her presenting symptoms activated protein C (APC) resistance, a risk factor for thrombosis, was demonstrated. There was no laboratory evidence of inherited thrombophilia; that is, antithrombin III, protein C and protein S levels were normal and the factor V Leiden mutation was not present. The frequency of muscle pain following the use of suxamethonium was compared in pre- and post-ovulatory women and in those taking a combined oral contraceptive pill. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups. Norplant-2 contraceptive implants consist of two Silastic rods in which levonorgestrel has been incorporated with the polymer. This on-going study describes our two-year experience with 100 acceptors of Norplant-2 rods in Singapore. No pregnancies occurred during the first two years of use. Desire for planned pregnancy and menstrual irregularities accounted for 86.4% of the removals during this period. The continuation rate at the end of two years was 78%. A 20-year-old woman with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia in remission was treated postremission with intermittent courses of intensive chemotherapy. She required blood and platelet transfusions following therapy, and oral contraceptives were used to suppress her menses while she was thrombocytopenic. One and one-half years after treatment began, she developed blisters on her hands, hypertrichosis, and dark urine. The diagnosis of porphyria cutanea tarda was made.
