Investigating Gendered Implicit Bias Among Healthcare Workers in South Africa: Development and Piloting of an Implicit Association Test in a High Tuberculosis and HIV Setting.

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, men with HIV and/or tuberculosis (TB) report negative experiences within health services and demonstrate poorer engagement and treatment outcomes compared to women. We developed and piloted an Implicit Association Test (IAT) to assess healthcare workers' (HCWs') gender-based associations characterizing patients with the concepts of "good" versus "bad." METHODS: Standardized photographs of Black male and female faces from the Chicago Face Database were paired with locally derived descriptors of "good" and "bad" patients. The IAT was piloted among nurses provi

Trans-incarceration: Reimagining confinement and the criminality of aging.

As the U.S. population continues to age and will require increasing levels of care, scholars continue to question what conventional methods of "custodial care" and rehabilitation accomplish for the individuals receiving them, relative to those providing them. To this end, critical discourse surrounding the spatial institutionalization of older adults argues that formal institutions of care and rehabilitation are simply alternative and synonymous forms of incarceration and imprisonment. Using semi-structured interviews with ten male residents of a Rhode Island nursing home and ten incarcerated

DETERMINANTS OF CUTANEOUS INJECTION-RELATED INFECTIONS AMONG INJECTION DRUG USERS AT AN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous injection-related infections (CIRI) are a primary reason injection drug users (IDU) access the emergency department (ED). METHODOLOGY: Using Cox proportional hazard regression, we examined predictors of ED use for CIRI, stratified by sex, among 1083 supervised injection facility (SIF) users. RESULTS: Over a four-year period, 289 (27%) visited the ED for CIRI, yielding an incidence density for females of 23.8 (95% confidence interval (CI): 19.3 - 29.0) and males of 19.2 per 100 person-years (95% CI: 16.7 - 22.1). Factors associated with ED use for CIRI among females in

Seroprevalence of measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella amongphysicians and nurses in Jordan.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella can affect susceptible healthcare workers who might subsequently spread the infection to susceptible patients and workers. Here, we aim to determine the seroprevalence of these infections among physicians and nurses and to compare the history of varicella with the results of varicella antibodies among study participants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two randomly selected groups, one group of physicians and one of nurses, from a university hospital in Jordan were interviewed and their serum IgG antibodies were measured. RESULTS: The physicians

The male experience of ISC with a silicone catheter.

Since its introduction in the 1970s, intermittent self-catheterisation (ISC) has become more common and should be considered the method of choice for draining retained urine. The realisation for male patients that they require catheterisation can be associated with a significant physical and psychological burden (Shaw and Logan, 2013). This article describes a UK multi-centre patient satisfaction survey evaluating the features of a male ISC silicone catheter. The survey was aimed at determining patient preferences and perceptions of learning ISC with the intermittent catheter to evaluate if a

Re-emergence of posttraumatic stress disorder nightmares with nursing home admission: treatment with prazosin.

Seniors with a history of emotional trauma decades earlier can experience a recurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms when transitioning to a nursing home. We present the case of an 86-year-old male Holocaust survivor admitted to a nursing home for physical therapy and rehabilitation 6 weeks after the death of his wife; the patient was expressing a persistent death wish. Despite the multiple risk factors for depression, his distress was specifically related to the reemergence of nightly posttraumatic nightmares. Over the course of 1 week of treatment with 1 mg prazosin at bedtime, h

Organ Damage and Quality of Life in Takayasu Arteritis - Evidence From a National Registry Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Takayasu arteritis, affecting primarily young women, damages large arteries and organs. We examined the impact of disease duration and sex on organ damage and quality of life using Japan's Intractable Disease Registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: After refining data, 2,013 of 2,795 patients were included in the study. Longer disease duration was related to a lower prevalence of disease activity symptoms, a higher prevalence of organ damage, and a higher proportion of patients requiring nursing care. Compared with men, women tended to have an earlier onset age, exhibiting longer disease d

Emergency nursing care of a patient with acute appendicitis complicated by esomeprazole-induced anaphylactic shock: a case report.

RATIONALE: Esomeprazole-induced anaphylactic shock followed by cardiac arrest is an extremely rare but life-threatening adverse event, particularly in patients with acute appendicitis. Clinical nursing experience in managing such critical conditions remains limited, and this case report provides valuable insights into emergency and intensive nursing care. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 53-year-old male patient with acute appendicitis developed facial flushing, urticaria, and loss of consciousness within 5 min after starting esomeprazole infusion, rapidly progressing to ventricular fibrillation and cardi

The mediating role of spirituality in the relationship between occupational stress and satisfaction with life among nurses.

BACKGROUND: Nurses often face high levels of occupational stress due to demanding workloads, emotional challenges, and the significant responsibilities associated with patient care. This stress negatively impacts their life satisfaction, yet the potential protective role of spirituality in mitigating these effects remains insufficiently explored. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to investigate the mediating role of spirituality in the relationship between occupational stress and life satisfaction among nurses. METHOD: Data were collected from 502 nurses (291 females, 58%; 211 males, 42%), a

Moonlighting intention and turnover intention among Chinese nurses: latent classes and associated factors.

BACKGROUND: The rise of the gig economy has increased moonlighting among healthcare professionals. In China, nurse moonlighting and multi-site nursing practice remain emerging and context-dependent phenomena. Existing studies largely describe behaviors, with limited insight into subgroups and mechanisms underlying moonlighting intention among nurses. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify latent classes based on Chinese nurses' moonlighting intention and turnover intention, and to examine factors associated with membership in these classes. DESIGN: A multicenter cross-sectional survey with

Basic Demographic Parameters Help Predict Outcomes in Patients Hospitalized With COVID-19 During the First Wave of Infection in West Texas.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The severity of COVID-19 ranges from asymptomatic subclinical infections to severe acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. Patients admitted to the hospital have increased mortality rates and patients requiring intensive care have significantly increased mortality rates. Multiple factors influence these outcomes. This study used simple demographic information available on admission to evaluate possible associations between these variables and outcomes, including mortality and length of stay. Clinical outcomes in 63 patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital in West Texas

The Human Cost of Respiratory Care: Professional Quality of Life and Burnout Across Multidisciplinary Cystic Fibrosis Teams.

BACKGROUND: Burnout is characterized by emotional exhaustion, reduced personal accomplishment, and increased depersonalization. Over one-half of physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals report substantial burnout, with consequences including decreased empathy and quality of care, increased medical errors, and increased health care costs. Team-based care, common in chronic respiratory conditions such as cystic fibrosis (CF), may be protective. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the risk of burnout among multidisciplinary CF care teams and does it differ by profession? STUDY DESIGN AND METH
