INTRODUCTION: Traditional methods of treating obesity have shown only limited efficacy. Intragastric balloon (BIB) is considered a new potential alternative method in the management of obesity. There is limited information in the literature about the outcome of BIB in the region of the Arabian Gulf. This study examined the efficacy and satisfaction of BIB in obese patients in Al-Amiri Hospital in Kuwait.
METHODS: A retrospective review of BIB in patients from October 2009 through December 2012 at Al-Amiri Hospital, Kuwait, included 179 patients. Weight loss, complications, satisfaction level,

BACKGROUND: General practitioners have been identified as having a key role in promoting healthy weight. In 2006, the South East Alliance of General Practice - Brisbane (Ltd) was approached by the Mater Children's Hospital to participate in the KOALA (Kinder Overweight Activity Lifestyle Actions) at Mater Healthy Lifestyle study. Between June 2007 and January 2008, only 14 eligible children were identified and referred to the KOALA study by participating GPs - a much lower referral rate than the study required. The aim of this study was to investigate barriers among GPs to the assessment of ov

Obesity in children and adolescents has reached alarming levels--20%-25% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese, and 4.9% of boys and 5.4% of girls are obese. Rates of obesity have increased significantly in Australia from 1985 to 1995, with the prevalence of overweight doubling and obesity trebling. Body mass index (related to reference standards for age and sex) is recommended as a practical measure of overweight and obesity in children, and is used in monitoring individual progress in clinical practice. Obesity in childhood and adolescence may be associated with a range of medi

OBJECTIVE: The high prevalence of obesity and cardiovascular risk factors in hypopituitarism affirms the need for effective weight loss intervention. In this study, we investigated the combined effect of sibutramine, diet, and exercise in obese hypopituitary patients (HPs).
RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: In an open-label prospective intervention trial, 14 obese well-substituted nondiabetic HPs and 14 matched simple obese controls were allocated to 11-month treatment with sibutramine (10 to 15 mg), diet (600 kcal/d deficit), and exercise. Anthropometric indices and body composition (obtained

The successful management of obesity requires a long-term approach that is tailored to an individual's lifestyle and needs. Initial treatment should focus on lifestyle modifications-dietary interventions and increased physical activity-with behavioral modification strategies used adjunctively. Several antiobesity drugs are approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in obese patients, as well as in overweight individuals with at least one obesity-related comorbidity. Most are approved only for short-term weight loss, but sibutramine and orlistat are approved for long-term weight loss

Overweight and obesity represent a rapidly growing threat to the health of populations in an increasing number of countries. Indeed they are now so common that they are replacing more traditional problems such as undernutrition and infectious diseases as the most significant causes of ill-health. Obesity comorbidities include coronary heart disease, hypertension and stroke, certain types of cancer, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, gallbladder disease, dyslipidaemia, osteoarthritis and gout, and pulmonary diseases, including sleep apnoea. In addition, the obese suffer from social bias,

Obesity is an increasing health problem in most developed countries and its prevalence is also increasing in developing countries. There has been no great success with dietary means and life style modification for permanent weight loss. Various surgical treatment methods for obesity are now available. They are aimed at limiting oral energy intake with or without causing dumping or inducing selective maldigestion and malabsorption. Based on current literature, up to 75% of excess weight is lost by surgical treatment with concomitant disappearance of hyperlipidaemias, type 2 diabetes, hypertensi

Dexfenfluramine increases serotonergic activity by stimulating serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) release into brain synapses, inhibiting its reuptake into presynaptic neurons and by directly stimulating postsynaptic serotonin receptors. On the basis of the serotonin hypothesis of appetite control, these actions would be expected to reduce appetite and, consequently, bodyweight. Studies conducted in animals and in overweight patients with and without associated disorders have confirmed the weight-reducing efficacy and good tolerability of dexfenfluramine. In 3-month clinical studies in obes

The substantial increase in scientific publications and accumulated knowledge in obesity management and metabolic bariatric surgery has been accompanied by lack of uniformity in professional terminology, both in English and in its translation into Hebrew. This inconsistency may lead to stigmatization, ambiguity, limited comparability between studies, and interpretation challenges among clinicians and researchers. In response, the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) published recommendations for a standardized terminology system to improve scientif…

Obesity is increasingly being recognized as a heterogeneous condition with strong genetic underpinnings. Monogenic obesity, caused by single-gene mutations, primarily affects the leptin-melanocortin pathway, which regulates hunger and satiety. Mutations in genes, such as LEP, LEPR, POMC, PCSK1, and MC4R, lead to hyperphagia, early onset severe obesity, and metabolic dysregulation. LEP and LEPR mutations impair leptin signaling, resulting in defective appetite suppression, whereas POMC and PCSK1 deficiencies disrupt prohormone processing. MC4R mutations, the most common cause of monogenic obesi

RECOMMENDATIONS These recommendations pertain to the management of weight over the reproductive years for adult women living with obesity (i.e. body mass index ≥30 kg/m2) with a singleton pregnancy, who are ≥18 years of age and do not have pre-existing diabetes or gestational diabetes. General advice. We recommend that healthcare providers (HCPs) should discuss weight management targets specific to the reproductive years with adult women living with obesity: pre-conception weight loss (Level 3, Grade C); gestational weight gain of 5 - 9 kg over the entire pregnancy (Level 4, Grade D); and post

The patient with obesity is at risk of developing cardiovascular disease and risk factors. Obesity negatively impacts prognosis and increases cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Therefore, a comprehensive risk assessment is needed to define the cardiovascular risk of the patient and, thus, a tailored management and treatment. Chronic and successful management of these patients involves the evaluation of the various therapeutic strategies available (comprehensive lifestyle intervention, weight-loss medications, and bariatric surgery) and the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular complic

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The prevalence of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is increasing proportional to the prevalence of obesity. Although anesthesiologists are familiar with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) - the most common SDB, anesthesiologists may not be aware of other SDB such as obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) and overlap syndrome (combination of OSA and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). The present review provides an update of information regarding the perioperative management of OHS and overlap syndrome.
RECENT FINDINGS: OHS and overlap syndrome are associated with significant

PURPOSE: In pediatric extremity fractures treated nonsurgically, maintaining reduction can be difficult in obese children owing to the larger soft tissue envelope. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between obesity and failure of nonsurgical management of pediatric both-bone forearm fractures.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 129 skeletally immature patients older than 2 years who received nonsurgical treatment for closed radius and ulna shaft fractures at a level I pediatric trauma center between 2011 and 2014. The patients were divided into 2 groups

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness and safety of two herbal therapies for weight reduction.
METHODS: A nonrandomized group of 128 patients seen in my office who had received one of two herbal treatments for obesity were retrospectively analyzed for their weight loss response. No control group was studied or analyzed in conjunction with these patients. All these patients had been unsuccessful losing weight with use of diet and exercise modalities alone. Of the 128 patients, 90 were treated with the herbal product BioLean, and 38 were treated with the combination of prescription phentermine

PURPOSE: Hypothalamic obesity (HO) is a treatment-related complication in craniopharyngioma (CP) survivors that markedly impairs long-term health and quality of life. Although overall survival exceeds 90% for both pediatric and adult CP, HO prevalence and clinical course differ substantially by age at onset. We aimed to compare HO manifestations, mechanisms, and treatment response between pediatric and adult CP cohorts.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of studies published between 2000 and 2025, comparing pediatric (childhood-onset) versus adult-onset CP cohorts, classified by age at di
