Optimizing combination dabrafenib and trametinib therapy in BRAF mutation-positive advanced melanoma patients: Guidelines from Australian melanoma medical oncologists.

BRAF mutations occur commonly in metastatic melanomas and inhibition of mutant BRAF and the downstream kinase MEK results in rapid tumor regression and prolonged survival in patients. Combined therapy with BRAF and MEK inhibition improves response rate, progression free survival and overall survival compared with single agent BRAF inhibition, and reduces the skin toxicity that is seen with BRAF inhibitor monotherapy. However, this combination is associated with an increase in other toxicities, particularly drug-related pyrexia, which affects approximately 50% of patients treated with dabrafeni

Treatment choice for chronic lymphocytic leukemia after covalent BTKi therapy: a patient and oncologist preference study.

This study aimed to quantify patient and oncologist preferences for treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and to estimate the tradeoffs each were willing to make between attributes of available therapies through an online discrete choice experiment and preference survey. A total of 150 patients with CLL and 150 oncologists who treat CLL were enrolled in the US. While patients and oncologists valued treatment efficacy, this was not the sole or primary driver of treatment choices for all patients; a subset of patients has other priorities. Some patients valued risk of side effects and …

Opioid Prescribing in an Opioid Crisis: What Basic Skills Should an Oncologist Have Regarding Opioid Therapy?

Although clinical evidence supports the use of opioids for cancer-related pain, doing so amidst the current opioid crisis remains a challenge. A proportion of opioid-related deaths in the USA are attributable to prescription opioids, which implicates health care providers as one of the major contributors. It is therefore even more important now for all clinicians to follow safe and effective opioid prescribing practices. Oncologists are often in the frontline of cancer pain management. They are encouraged to use validated tools to screen all patients receiving opioids for high risk behaviors. …
