The Relationship Between Child Maltreatment and Partner Violence Victimization and Perpetration Among College Students: Focus on Auditory Status and Gender.

Partner violence is a pervasive public health concern that has received significant attention over the past three decades. Although a number of studies have reported that college students who are Deaf or hard of hearing are at an increased risk of experiencing partner violence compared with their hearing counterparts, little is known about partner violence perpetration among college students who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Furthermore, beyond disability, studies examining partner violence among students with disabilities tend to ignore other potential risk factors that may increase the risk o

Household and child correlates of child trafficking indicators in Eastern Sierra Leone.

Child trafficking indicators remain highly prevalent in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province, yet less is known about whether household-level correlates are robust when child-level variation within households is considered. This study examined household and child correlates of child trafficking indicators using baseline survey data from 2,429 households in Kailahun, Kenema, and Kono districts, including 5,999 rostered children aged 5-17. Child trafficking indicators were constructed from the survey's operational definition, including hazardous sectors, hazardous work conditions, and force, fraud, c

Holt-Oram syndrome with hypoplastic left heart syndrome in an African child.

This report illustrates the rare association of Holt-Oram syndrome with hypoplastic left heart syndrome hitherto unreported in an African child. The above association is highlighted as this child and the only other case reported in a Caucasian were diagnosed post mortem. The need for early cardiovascular and genetic evaluation or simple detailed family history to aid counselling is also emphasised.

Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W-135 primary monarthritis of the hip in an immunocompetent child.

Reported here is the first known case of primary monoarthritis of the hip due to Neisseria meningitidis W-135. The isolate was obtained from an immunocompetent child suffering from acute hip pain as the only symptom upon presentation at the hospital. Meningococcal infection must be considered in the diagnosis of any child presenting with arthritis, even if afebrile and without rash.

[The social determinants of child malnutrition in Colombia from a family medicine perspective].

CONTEXT: Child malnutrition is a public health problem not only in Colombia but throughout the world, as it increases mortality associated with preventable causes. In Colombia, poverty is one of those causes present mainly in rural areas where one in 10 children suffers from malnutrition. METHODOLOGY: We searched ScienceDirect, PubMed, ClinicalKey, and SciELO for references on child malnutrition, its social determinants, and elements for its intervention in Colombia. RESULTS: The review allowed us to identify that many factors influence this problem determined not only by the lack of food bu

Systemic mastocytosis associated with Hodgkin's lymphoma in a 4-year-old child.

Systemic mastocytosis with associated clonal hematologic non-mast cell lineage disease (SM-AHN) represents a specific subtype of mastocytosis and is extremely rare in children. We describe a 4-year-old child with systemic mastocytosis associated with Hodgkin's lymphoma. The child had cutaneous mastocytosis and lymphadenopathy without other clinical features of SM, which was diagnosed only by bone marrow examination.

Gastrointestinal smooth muscle tumors and iron deficiency anemia in children.

Smooth muscle tumors are rarely seen in the pediatric population. We present a child with smooth muscle tumor of low malignant potential in the ileocecal valve region in whom iron deficiency anemia was the only presenting sign. Abdominal computed tomographic (CT) scan, barium enema, and colonoscopy revealed the mass. Following resection of the tumor the anemia was corrected and the child feels well.

[The clinico-radiological aspects of tuberculosis in infants and young children].

The primary pulmonary tuberculosis in the infant and small child is a reality we have to consider. Although the success in the antituberculosis struggle is evident and real in Romania, the contamination risk as this age is present and may lead to very severe forms. The bacteriologic investigation is the only way of establishing a certain diagnosis. But, since in the infant and the small child the etiologic agent is isolated only in 50% of cases, the clinical criteria with the test at tuberculin, radiologic examination, anamnestic data and epidemiologic inquiry increase considerably in importan

Depression and anxiety in parents of children with ADHD and varying levels of oppositional defiant behaviors: modeling relationships with family functioning.

This study investigated the relation between parental anxiety and family functioning. Parental anxiety and depression, child attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms were all included as predictors of 3 measures of family functioning to examine the independent contributions of each. Using a self-report battery completed by 45 mother-father pairs, 3 family functioning factors were derived: Parental Warmth and Positive Involvement, Intrusiveness and Negative Discipline, and Social Distress. Multilevel modeling simultaneously estimated the

Pattern of neuropsychological deficit at age five years following neonatal unilateral brain injury.

The pattern of language deficit following left-hemisphere brain injury and visual/spatial deficit following right-hemisphere injury in an adult or older child is well recognized, but has been inconsistently reported following presumed neonatal brain injury. Our prospective study of 24 children at age 5 with documented neonatal unilateral brain injury lends support to the theory of hemisphere specialization at the time of birth. Twelve children who had unilateral left-hemisphere lesion were compared to 12 children with unilateral right-hemisphere lesion of similar timing and severity. Relative

Rhabdomyolysis in a Child Secondary to Staphylococcus aureus Endocarditis.

Rhabdomyolysis secondary to bacterial infection has only rarely been investigated, and there are case reports of the same mainly in adults. This article describes the first reported case of rhabdomyolysis in a child secondary to Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis. A 12-year-old child presented with myalgia, pyrexia and dark urine and was found to have infective endocarditis due to S. aureus.

Incontinentia pigmenti et achromians.

A case is reported, apparently the first of its kind in the literature, of a female child in which there were not only pigmented lesions of incontinentia pigmenti but also hypopigmented lesions of incontinentia pigmenti achromians. The title incontinentia pigmenti et achromians is suggested for this combined disorder. The child also had associated lesions in the form of nail dystrophy, delayed dentition and epilepsy.

Spectrum of outpatient illness in a school-based cohort in Haiti, with a focus on diarrheal pathogens.

Currently, there are only limited data available on rates of major diagnostic categories of illnesses among Haitian children. We have established a cohort of 1,245 students attending schools run by the Christianville Foundation in the Gressier/Leogane region of Haiti, for whom our group provides primary medical care. Among 1,357 clinic visits during the 2012-2013 academic year, the main disease categories (with rates per 1,000 child years of observation) included acute respiratory infection (ARI) (385.6 cases/1,000 child years of observation), gastrointestinal complaints (277.8 cases/1,000 chi

Mother-child agreement on behavioral ratings in Tourette syndrome: a controlled study.

In Tourette syndrome, motor and phonic tics are associated with a spectrum of psychiatric disorders. As proxy report instruments are commonly used to assess children with Tourette syndrome, we investigated the relationship between child and mother ratings of behavioral problems. We enrolled 28 children with Tourette syndrome (25 males; mean age, 13.9 years) and 61 gender- and age-matched healthy controls (55 males; mean age, 14.7 years). Clinicians completed measures of tic severity, and all children completed the Youth Self-Report version of the Child Behavior Checklist, while their mothers c

Preimplantation HLA typing: having children to save our loved ones.

Preimplantation tissue typing has been proposed as a method for creating a tissue matched child that can serve as a haematopoietic stem cell donor to save its sick sibling in need of a stem cell transplant. Despite recent promising results, many people have expressed their disapproval of this method. This paper addresses the main concerns of these critics: the risk of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for the child to be born; the intention to have a donor child; the limits that should be placed on what may be done to the donor child, and whether the intended recipient can be someone oth

[Psychological aspects of genital surgery in childhood].

Although the children's urogenital surgery is discipline in expansion which successfully solves even the most complicated anomalies of urogeniral tract, only lately there is enough attention paid on the psychological aspects of these anomalies and surgical operation on genitals. The boys with hypospadias, phimosis and other congenital anomalies represent a risky group for the difficulties in forming the sexual identity and for the appearance of different psychopathology in their childhood and later in life. The surgical operation itself presents a traumatic situation for the child and it may d

Distress Intolerance Mediates the Relationship between Child Maltreatment and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury among Chinese Adolescents: A Three-Wave Longitudinal Study.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a serious public health concern among adolescents. Identifying risk factors of NSSI is important to effectively prevent or reduce such behavior. Child maltreatment is one of the most widely recognized risk factors for NSSI. How child maltreatment and NSSI is related, however, is still unclear. The present study tested the temporal relationship between physical and emotional abuse and NSSI, with distress intolerance as the potential mediator. Potential gender differences on these associations were also tested. We assessed all study variables among 2259 Chinese

The relationship of parental overprotection, perceived child vulnerability, and parenting stress to uncertainty in youth with chronic illness.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship of parent-reported overprotection (OP), perceived child vulnerability (PCV), and parenting stress (PS) to youth-reported illness uncertainty, and to explore potential developmental differences. METHOD: Eighty-two children and 82 adolescents (n = 164) diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) or asthma, completed a measure of illness uncertainty, while their parents completed measures of OP, PCV, and PS. RESULTS: After controlling for demographic and illness parameters, both PCV and PS significantly predicted youth illness uncertainty in the combined

The relationship between maternal and child bone density in Nigerian children with and without nutritional rickets.

UNLABELLED: We found a positive relationship between bone density in Nigerian children with and without rickets and that of their mothers. After treatment, children with rickets had greater bone density than children without rickets, indicating that children genetically programmed to have greater bone density may have a higher risk of rickets. INTRODUCTION: To determine the relationship between bone density in children with and without rickets and that of their mothers METHODS: Using an unmatched case-control design, forearm areal bone mineral density (aBMD) was measured in 52 and 135 Nigeria
