Wavelength encoded analytical imaging and fiber optic sensing with pH sensitive CdTe quantum dots.

CdTe quantum dots (QDs), capped with mercaptopropionic acid (MPA), were synthesized and the variation of their fluorescence properties (steady state and lifetime) with pH was assessed in solution and when immobilized in a sol-gel host. Three different sizes of CdTe QDs with excited state lifetimes ranging from 42 to 48 ns and with emission maximum at 540 nm (QD(540)), 580 nm (QD(580)) and 625 nm (QD(625)) were selected. The solution pH affects the maximum emission wavelength (shifts to higher wavelengths of 23, 24 and 27 nm for QD(540), QD(580) and QD(625), respectively), the excited state lif

Bcl-2 overexpression per se does not promote regeneration of neonatal crushed optic fibers.

We have explored whether overexpression of the bcl-2 gene 'per se' can promote regeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) after optic nerve axotomy in developing transgenic mice. We have used newborn mice (postnatal day 5) because at this age the central nervous system environment is more permissive for regeneration than in adults, thus, maximizing the probability to detect a regeneration-promoting role of bcl-2. Thirty days postsurgery we found that in mice overexpressing bcl-2, a high proportion of retinal ganglion cells survived and also that some fibers in the proximal stump of the opti

Glaucoma visual field analysis by computed profile of nerve fiber function in optic disc sectors.

Automated perimetry has decreased the subjective aspects of data collection, but analysis has remained largely subjective. A microcomputer permits more objective analysis by regrouping and averaging data points in the threshold static visual field according to their retinotopic projection onto the optic disc rather than according to their eccentricity from the point of fixation. The applications of the technique include (1) following glaucomatous visual field loss, (2) differentiating glaucomatous from other forms of visual loss, and (3) studying the effects of aging on the visual field. Long-Term BOTDA Baseline Assessment of a Fiber Optic Sensing Textile on a Composite Bridge Girder.

This paper presents a six-year assessment of the baseline comparability of a Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA)-based sensing textile installed in a composite bridge girder under unloaded field conditions. Six monitoring campaigns collected from 2020 to 2025 were analyzed using campaign-temperature-corrected strain profiles. The known physical segmentation of the sensing path was used to evaluate cross-campaign behavior through segment-wise mean deviation, root-mean-square deviation (RMSD), percentile-based deviation, and position-wise drift-rate metrics. The results show clear seg

Interferometric Near-Field Scanning Optical Microscopy via Phase Conjugation of a Multimode Fiber Probe.

Interferometric near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) enables simultaneous measurement of both the amplitude and phase of the optical near field. In its aperture-type implementation, the local field is collected through a sub-wavelength aperture and an optical fiber. The choice of this fiber imposes an inherent trade-off between signal strength and phase fidelity. Single-mode fiber probes maintain phase fidelity but suffer from low signal intensity, whereas multimode fiber probes offer higher throughput but introduce severe phase distortions. Here, we present phase-conjugation interfer

Toscana Virus Diagnosis via a Point-of-Care Tool Based on Disposable Optical Fiber Biosensors.

The Toscana virus (TOSV) is an emerging Phlebovirus endemic to the Mediterranean region, with marked neurotropism, responsible for often undiagnosed cases of meningitis and meningoencephalitis. Rapid and precise identification is critical for medical treatment, but traditional approaches like Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and serology have limits in terms of time, cost, and potential cross-reactivity. This proof-of-concept introduces a low-cost point-of-care test (POCT) based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in plastic optical fibers (POFs) combined with an antibody selective for TOSV nucl

A Refractive Index Sensor Based on Spectral Interrogation of a Long Tapered Side-Hole Optical Fiber.

This article describes an external refractive index (RI) sensor based on a spectral analysis of the light transmission through a long tapered side-hole optical fiber (S-H OF). A section of the S-H OF was fusion-spliced with SMFs at both ends and connected to a supercontinuum source at the input and an optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) at the output. To investigate the effect of the external RI on the spectral characteristics, immersion liquids with refractive indices in the ranges of 1.32-1.35 and 1.37-1.42, with increments of 0.01, were used. Power loss measurements were carried out for each li

Gold-coated ZnO nanostructures on no-core optical fiber for ammonia detection in food spoilage applications.

A selective and cost-effective optical fiber sensor for detecting ammonia gas, a key byproduct of food spoilage, was developed using a no-core fiber (NCF) structure. The optical fiber was coated with a zinc oxide (ZnO) thin film decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to enhance sensitivity and selectivity. Four sensor configurations were fabricated with varying AuNP concentrations (0.1 mM and 1 mM) and ZnO nanostructure morphology (nanoparticles and nanorods) and tested with ammonia (NH₃) gas concentrations ranging from 0.15 to 10 ppm, a typical range for food spoilage. The sensor functiona

Development of subgingival calculus detector utilizing optical fiber: Verification of its potential for clinical application.

The removal of subgingival deposits, especially calculus, plays a crucial role in basic periodontal therapy. However, manual detection methods affect accuracy owing to the operator's skill. To avoid this uncertainty, we have developed a calculus detection device named "Sensor probe" and evaluated its ability to detect calculus for future clinical applications. The Sensor probe consisted of a 635 nm-wavelength semiconductor laser and a 0.5 mm-diameter single-mode optical fiber. Initially, the performance of the device was evaluated using clinically obtained extracted teeth with calculus covered
