Attempted traction of impacted and ankylosed maxillary canines.

The aim of this article is to report the clinical orthodontic treatment of an adult patient with 2 impacted maxillary canines. Traction was applied to the impacted teeth; however, after 7 months, the teeth were found to be ankylosed and were extracted. The extraction spaces were closed by moving the posterior teeth mesially with mini-implant anchorage. The results were satisfactory, with the premolars in the functional position of the canines.

Interim prosthetic phase of multidisciplinary management of cleidocranial dysplasia: "the Bronx Approach".

This case report presents treatment of two patients with the usual characteristics of Cleidocranial Dysostosis. A multidisciplinary approach using the disciplines of prosthodontics, orthodontics, and oral surgery was effected. Exfoliation of the patient's deciduous teeth and failure of permanent anterior tooth eruption led to emotional, social, and self-esteem issues in both patients. Due to the psychosocial issues confronting these two patients, esthetics was addressed prior to active intervention with orthodontics and after some surgical intervention. The use of two interim overdenture prost

Combined orthodontic, surgical, and restorative approach to treat a complicated crown-root fracture in a maxillary central incisor.

This case report shows the treatment of a severe traumatic tooth injury. For the maxillary right central incisor, the trauma was considered a complicated crown-root fracture. The level of the fracture line, the length of the remaining root segment, and the presence and condition of the tooth fragment determined the type of therapy. Traumatized teeth with fractures below the alveolar crest are often considered hopeless. As this report shows, the treatment of a complicated crown-root fracture in the esthetic region can be challenging. Orthodontic extrusion and crown-length surgery were performed…

Cortical and Trabecular Bone Stress Assessment during Periodontal Breakdown-A Comparative Finite Element Analysis of Multiple Failure Criteria.

Background and Objectives: This numerical analysis investigated the biomechanical behavior of the mandibular bone as a structure subjected to 0.5 N of orthodontic force during periodontal breakdown. Additionally, the suitability of the five most used failure criteria (Von Mises (VM), Tresca (T), maximum principal (S1), minimum principal (S3), and hydrostatic pressure (HP)) for the study of bone was assessed, and a single criterion was identified for the study of teeth and the surrounding periodontium (by performing correlations with other FEA studies). Materials and Methods: The finite element

Endodontic-orthodontic relationships: a review of integrated treatment planning challenges.

Literature review There is a paucity of information on the concise relationship between endodontics and orthodontics during treatment planning decisions. This relationship ranges from effects on the pulp from orthodontic treatment and the potential for resorption during tooth movement, to the clinical management of teeth requiring integrated endodontic and orthodontic treatment. This paper reviews the literature based on the definition of endodontics and the scope of endodontic practice as they relate to common orthodontic-endodontic treatment planning challenges. Literature data bases were ac

Periodontal status of anterior teeth following clinical crown lengthening by minimally traumatic controlled surgical extrusion.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The number of fractured anterior teeth following trauma has been increasing while not every patient is able to afford a dental implant instead of maintaining the injured tooth. Thus, a tooth conservation solution is required to place an aesthetic and functional restoration without biologic width violation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of minimally traumatic controlled surgical extrusion in fractured anterior teeth crown lengthening by assessing the periodontal status through clinical examination and radiographs. METHODS: This longitudinal observatio

A retrospective analysis of the characteristics, treatment and follow-up of 26 odontomas in Greek children.

Odontomas represent the most common type of odontogenic jaw tumors among patients younger than 20 years of age. Clinically, they are often associated with eruption failure of adjacent permanent teeth, and are classified as compound and complex. The aim of the present retrospective study was to present the characteristics, treatment approach and outcome of odontomas in Greek children, over a ten-year period. Twenty six patients, 2 to 14 years of age (mean 9.3 years), with odontomas treated during the years 1999-2008 at the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery of a Children's Hospital, wer

Early tooth movement pattern after application of a controlled continuous orthodontic force. A human experimental model.

This clinical study was designed to investigate early orthodontic movement of human premolars subjected to a controlled, continuous, horizontally directed force. The maxillary right, first or second premolar in 56 children, 18 boys and 38 girls (mean age 13.8 years), was moved buccally with a fixed orthodontic appliance with a frontal bite-block disengaging the occlusion. The contralateral premolar served as control. A weekly controlled and reactivated force of 50 cN (approximately 50 gm) was applied. The force declined on average about 24% per week. The patient material was subgrouped to comp

Recovering teeth from a large dentigerous cyst: A case report.

A dentigerous cyst is an odontogenic lesion caused by the expansion of the follicle surrounding the crown of impacted, embedded or unerupted teeth. These cysts may cause destruction of the bone, displacement of adjacent teeth, resorption of their roots and prevent the eruption of cyst-associated permanent teeth. This paper discusses successful use of marsupialization combined with orthodontic treatment to treat cyst-associated impacted permanent teeth and to correct a class II open bite malocclusion.

[Spontaneous reeruption after intrusive luxation of the permanent incisors by incomplete root formation. Two case reports (in German)].

In the context of tooth trauma mostly the maxillary central front teeth are involved, whereby their roots are in some cases in developing stage (immature). The intrusive luxation represents one of the most severe types of dental trauma because of the damage to the periodontal ligament, alveolar bone and pulp. Principally, three different treatment options are available: 1. Spontaneous reeruption, 2. orthodontic extrusion, 3. surgical repositioning. This report is aiming to illustrate, by two cases, that traumatic intruded teeth with incomplete root formation, treated without active repositioni…

Force eruption of mandibular second incisor in an 11- year old boy: a technical report.

There is a great challenge in the treatment of deeply fractured and un-restorable teeth among dentists. Orthodontic force eruption is a method of treatment for these teeth to preserve natural root system and periodontal structures. This technical report is a new modification of this procedure presented in an 11- year old boy with deeply fractured left second mandibular incisor. The fractured teeth were treated with root canal therapy and a file #80 was modified to become a hook cemented into the fractured tooth. Anterior teeth were splinted and used as anchorage to help the root extrusion. 1-y
