Effects of simulated arch constriction on upper airway function during sleep.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize functional changes of the airway while wearing an appliance simulating severe arch constriction using level 3 polysomnography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this pilot, single-blinded prospective randomized cross-over trial, 34 participants were recruited from the student/staff population of a dental school. Epworth Sleepiness Scale, STOPBANG questionnaire, lateral cephalograms, and digital dental casts were gathered from all patients. Arch constriction was simulated by adding 5 mm thickness to lingual aspects of the dentition using vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs). Eac

Functional and fixed orthodontic treatment in a child with cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy is a permanent neuromuscular motor disorder that results from injury in the developing brain during the prenatal or postnatal period. Common functional and craniofacial problems related to cerebral palsy include impaired swallowing, chewing, and speech; maxillary transverse deficiency; excessive anterior facial height; and Class II malocclusion. This article reports the treatment of a 12-year-old girl with ataxic cerebral palsy; she had a dental and skeletal Class II malocclusion, maxillary transverse deficiency, and severe crowding in both arches. Treatment included rapid maxil

Essix restoration: a novel approach for transitional teeth replacement.

Loss of teeth is a distressing situation. The patient may cultivate feeling of loss of an organ on loss of teeth. Especially when anterior teeth are lost appearance of the patient is compromised with altered pronunciation. This is a really embarrassing situation for people working as news readers, social workers, marketing executives, theatre artists or persons whose presentation in front of people is important as part of their work. Replacement of missing teeth immediately after loss is not possible always due to local and systemic physiological factors, age, pathological factors and unfavour

Early crossbite correction: a three-dimensional evaluation.

A crossbite (CB) occurs in approximately 4-23 per cent of young children and may lead to mandibular and facial asymmetry. Therefore, early intervention is often necessary to create conditions for normal occlusal and facial development. The aim of this study was to assess facial asymmetry and palatal volume (pre- and post-treatment) in two groups of children, one with a unilateral CB and the other with no crossbite (NCB). Thirty children with CB (13 males, 17 females, mean age 4.9 +/- 0.98 years) and 28 children with NCB (17 males, 11 females, mean age 5.3 +/- 0.36 years) were included in the s

Autotransplantation of immature second premolar combined with alveolar ridge splitting: A long-term (6-year) follow-up case report.

This case report describes a successful autotransplantation procedure for an impacted mandibular left second premolar with incomplete root formation. Despite caries and root resorption, the patient's mandibular left second primary molar was retained. Furthermore, the severe impaction of the mandibular left second premolar ruled out orthodontic realignment. Due to the young age of the patient, dental implantation was not feasible, leading to the selection of autotransplantation as the preferred method for replacing the retained primary molar. To address the insufficient buccolingual width of th

Fixed retention of congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors using a chairside, prefabricated fiber-reinforced composite bridge.

Adolescents with congenitally missing lateral incisors require an interim space maintainer to restore function and esthetics before craniofacial growth is complete and an endosseous implant can be placed. This article presents 2 patients, each with a missing lateral incisor, who underwent orthodontic therapy. A chairside, prefabricated fiber-reinforced composite bridge was used as a fixed space maintainer after the appliances were removed.

[Secondary retention of permanent molars. II. Therapy].

The efficacy of 5 treatment modalities for secondary retention of permanent molars was evaluated in 62 patients with 92 affected molars. The results showed that a prosthetic build up is a proper treatment if secondary retention develops late in or after the growth spurt. In these cases the extent of infraocclusion is slight and relatively stable. If secondary retention starts before the growth spurt, immediate removal of the retained molar followed by orthodontic treatment to close the diastema gives maximal success. When secondary retention develops during the growth spurt, the tooth affected
