BACKGROUND: The authors conducted a systematic review of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) applications in orthodontics and evaluated the level of evidence to determine whether the use of CBCT is justified in orthodontics.
TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors identified articles by searching the Cochrane Library, PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature databases. They searched the articles' reference lists manually for additional articles and had no language limitations. They did not search the gray literature. Inclusion criteria were …

The presence of a gingival recession prior to orthodontic treatment is a real problem. Patients are concerned about losing their teeth but may also complain of their unpleasant appearance or root sensitivity in the exposed area. The orthodontist is not sure whether orthodontic treatment can be performed or whether the tooth movement will not aggravate the recession and whether periodontal surgery needs to be done before or after orthodontic treatment. The aim of this paper is to present recent data from the literature and several clinical situations in adults in order to submit a treatment seq

Cases in which a single tooth is in need of crown lengthening while remaining esthetically pleasing represent a unique challenge. A case is presented here in which crown lengthening in a challenging esthetic situation on a canine was achieved through forced eruption with a removable orthodontic appliance. The case was considered a success by both the clinician and the patient. Fabrication of the acrylic stent is a simple procedure that can be completed chairside, and the patient's acceptance of the appliance as well as the overall cost and time invested made this a very convenient alternative.

Treatment for patients with craniofacial anomalies always presents a great challenge to orthodontists. Treatment usually requires both comprehensive orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery. In this article, we report on a patient with Pfeiffer's syndrome treated by midfacial distraction and comprehensive orthodontics.

In adult periodontal patients, pathologic tooth migration can create serious functional and aesthetic problems. In such situations, a combined orthodontic and periodontal treatment is indicated. Key point for obtaining positive outcomes is a status of periodontal health prior and during the orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic therapy has been shown to be a reliable therapy for restoring compromised dentitions, for closing infrabony defects, for reducing gingival recessions and improve interdental papilla levels. Based on these evidences, orthodontics can be considered as a first choice for the …

When a dentist replants an avulsed tooth, the repair process sometimes results in the cementum of the root and the alveolar bone fusing toge … h was judged near completion, the tooth was moved back to the occlusal plane using a combination of orthodontics, surgical block osteotomy, and distraction osteogenesis to reposition the tooth at the proper vertical position in the arch. This approach had the advantage of bringing both the incisal edge and the gingival margin of the clinical crown to the prope …

In a retrospective study, 90 American Board of Orthodontic (ABO) cases were evaluated for treatment outcome. Changes in occlusion, cephalometric skeletal and dental variables, soft tissue variables, and root resorption were evaluated. The occlusions of completed ABO cases were compared with 147 naturally occurring good-to-excellent occlusions from the Andrews Foundation for Education and Research, using the Ideal Tooth Relationship Index (ITRI). Cephalometric variables were evaluated in relation to an "acceptable range" based on established standards. Photographs were evaluated for lip posture

Over the last decade magnets have been used in orthodontic and dentofacial orthopaedics and attempts have been made to evaluate the biological implications of magnets and magnetic fields during clinical application. This review aims to indicate the advantages and disadvantages of magnets in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics over traditional techniques, and update related clinical experiences. The treatment of impacted teeth and Class II malocclusions by means of magnetic force is favoured and the correction of Class III and open bite malocclusions involving the use of magnets also appe…

This article described research aimed at testing the hypothesis that tissue remodeling during orthodontic tooth movement is modulated, at least in part, by factors derived from the nervous and vascular (immune) systems. Specifically, the neurotransmitters SP and VIP and the cytokines IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta were localized immunohistochemically in paradental tissues of cat canines that had been treated by the application of an 80 g tipping force for 1 hour to 14 days. Increased staining (concentrations) of these agents were found in areas of PDL tension and compression at different time period

Estrogen is an essential regulator of the bone tissue. The remodeling of the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament is the basis of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). There is a negative coregulation between physiological estrogen levels and the rate of OTM. As a possible inhibitory factor of OTM, estrogen suppresses bone resorption by inhibiting osteoclastic differentiation and restraining osteoclast lifespan though multiple pathways and cytokines, leading to the suppression of the initiation step of bone remodeling. On the other hand, estrogen stimulates osteoblastic differentiation and funct

INTRODUCTION: Pain is an important aspect of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL). Understanding how patients' pain experiences during their treatment affect their quality of life (QOL) is important and the absence of pain/discomfort is important for achieving a high QOL.
AIM AND OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between pain and OHRQOL among patients wearing fixed orthodontic appliances and to evaluate whether patient motivation and counseling had an effect on the pain and discomfort.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The McGill-Short-Form with visual analog

The aim of this study was to explore the association between signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and orthodontic treatment need in orthodontically untreated children and adolescents. One thousand five hundred and ninety-seven subjects aged 11-19 years, without previous orthodontic history, from sixteen randomly selected public schools in Zagreb, Croatia, were examined. Malocclusion characteristics were assessed by using the criteria proposed by Bjork et al., the Dental Aesthetic Index, and the Aesthetic Component of Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need. Data on TMD signs/sym

In this article, the interdisciplinary management of an isolated-type recession defect in a severely compromised mandibular incisor of a young post-orthodontic patient is described. The prognosis of root coverage surgery was very questionable and unpredictable due to the severe root malposition (III Miller class gingival recession). The treatment plan consisted of: (1) interproximal enamel reduction to gain space within the dental arch, (2) orthodontic repositioning of the root of the affected tooth within the alveolar bone and (3) root coverage mucogingival surgery. Clinical re-evaluation 7 m

The bonded lingual retainer (BLR) is considered a favorable choice for retaining lower incisors' alignment post-orthodontic treatment; however, it may cause some unwanted effects such as inadvertent tooth movement and torque changes. These often result in gingival recession (Miller class III-type) with exposure of the root surface, which compromises the esthetics and hinders the comfort of the patient. Fifteen post-orthodontic patients presenting Miller class III-type recessions with BLR were examined. Two protocols were used: the first included the removal of the BLR prior to surgery and the
